David I like your line of thinking.
Long term interest in helping will do the most good.
That is why I thought a lower priced raffle ticket might be better. If we can raise peoples awareness and involvement then it is far better in the long run. I was never involved with CF prior to seeing what a wonderful thing the Fling turned into. Now I can't wait for June to get here.
Having a chance to help rid the world of CF, win a car and get a tax deduction all for $25... WOW! What an awesome way to get more people involved. If the fling gets 100 new people excited about helping Jenny then the total raised at the event is irrelevent because more people means more money year after year.

David, thanks for your opinion about the raffle. I believed that Turk and others had the right idea about an auction, but if I was only going to listen to one persons opinion on this mater - it would be yours.
Now, if you're thinking that you might raise around $50,000- this year - please tell DV not to bother printing any raffle tickets. I'll take them all, and I don't even need an engine! Just trying to save you guys some printing costs....
Back to reality, as soon as the price and format is sorted out I'll spread the word over here. Our current exchnge rate makes the tickets nearly double the price (and without the tax break), but a left hand drive, naked alum. bodied FIA driving down the street here in Australia would probably draw more attention than any other Cobra in the country. All the better if a mild-mannered 30 year old small business owner from Brisbane won it....

Sorry Craig, but the car will be coming to Melbourne, Australia when I win the raffle! Turk and DV, just tell me how much the tickets are and a cheque will be in the mail, i will organise shipping costs when i win it. I would love to be at DVSF3 but i think i will have to settle for number 4, when i bring my car with me. Good luck guys.

Sorry Andy,
But that 289 FIA will be mine (insert evil laugh here), mine and all mine............

PS: I am in the same mind set as the Kirkhams...it is not what we donate now to CF, but what we can donate in the long run that counts the most..................

Just a question here:
Are you all sure you can claim a tax deduction for raffle tickets even when it is a charitable cause?

I wish I were only half as articulate as some.
Amen David, Amen.
When it happens, the day that our children ask what is CF? You will know you had a strong hand in the demize of this terrible disease. You older guys, remember the "Polio Dime Drives"?
I'd bet that most of your kids don't remember, and I know your grandkids certainly don't!
"WE" can do this! Damn it..we really can!
DV...you guys really know how to motivate me...pass the cookies please
PS...Stush absolutely! All proceeds go directly to CF, which of course is a fully licensed charitable organization! Now...the taxes on the car is another story

Another Alternative
With the past success of the DVSF and the potential growth for the future, another possibility is to have a well known car enthusiast " endorse " the DVSF and the long term fund raising effort. Could apply to the donated Cobra.
If there is someone in the Public Affairs/Relations business, how can individuals such as Jay Leno, David Letterman, a racing commentator , an example would be Benny Parsons, or a NASCAR driver, active or retired , be contacted for their direct participation ? Can you imagine the national exposure if DV and others appeared on late night TV, with the donated Cobra on the stage.
Or, USA Today, the Wall St Journal etc., have human interest articles......what better opportunity than the DVSF

Can we find out if a lower price ticket will make up the difference in more ticket sales? For the last 2 years I have sold tickets but it is hard to sell a $50 ticket to most people. Maybe 1 for $30 and 2 for $50. I think this year is going to be harder than last.

Here's my take on raffles and people who buy tickets. I have been involved in quite a few car raffles and the main focus I see is people wanting something that they can't normally afford. Everyone on this forum understands the value of a Kirkham car but trying to sell tickets to anybody that isn't in this realm, won't.
All of us are hit daily by charities asking for money so to the general public this is just another charity raffle. If people understood the cause they would be donating already. I look through Hemmings all the time and see raffle cars. I sometimes buy tickets but I couldn't tell you want the charity is. I buy the ticket because I like the car. I don't ever think I'm going to win but it does make me feel better knowing I donated to a worthy cause.
I think many of you have come up with the right idea on keeping the price low. I think we can sell many more tickets at a price of $10 rather than $100. If the car is to be displayed at car shows the general public views the car as a "Cobra" not a Kirkham, SAI, ERA or any other brand. Most people will spend $10 because they understand they probably won't win but the money is put to good use. If I want to buy $200 worth what is the difference if it's 2 tickets or 20. I think we open the doors to many people if the price is kept low. There's a much longer line at the $1 raffle than at the $100 raffle.
DV is right about the fling being a family event. Isn't it wonderful that CF is being helped along the way. I also applaud the Kirkhams for lowering the table to my level. I have donated each year and I will again this year but I sometimes get the feeling that my paltry gifts aren't worth the postage. They are right in the statement that each gift represents what the person can afford or manage. It isn't the value it's the cause that benefits. I never donated anything with the intent of it bringing in a certain dollar amount, never crossed my mind. I felt good having donated to a great bunch of people.
Sorry to have rambled on but once I get started it's hard to stop.
Don

Turk,
How about this..... Everyone that was planning on attending DVSF lll figure out how much they were planning on spending at the event.... hotel, transportation, food, raffle tickets, hats, t-shirts etc. . We cancel the event (DVSF lll)and send the money we all planned on spending directly to Cystic Fibrosis.
On the serious side....
You seem very passionate about the fund raising. I believe that all the money raised by this event goes to charity.. Compare it to some other fund raisers that take place run by professionals--- Small percentages go to the charity and the "Pros" take the lions share.. The "amateur" fund raisers at DVSF seem to be trying their best and doing a great job at it and it's not costing CF anything. Sounds like a plan to me..
A relative newbie,

RAFFLE; YES
RAFFLE TICKETS $100 EACH NO DISCOUNT. SELL AS MANY WE CAN!! IF YOU CANNOT RAISE A 100 BUCK BETWEEN NOW AND JUNE, YOU DON'T NEED TO DEAM ABOUT COBRAS!
GET KIT CAR MAG AND OTHER CAR MAGS TO RUN ADS FOR THE RAFFLE. ONLY NEED A PICTURE OF A CAR THAT LOOKS LIKE THE FINISHED COBRA. STATE THAT IN THE AD.
EACH CLUB/ MEMBER CAN SELL TICKETS AT CAR FUNCTIONS. TICKET CONTROLLED THUR DV OR ONE PERSON. IF YOU CHECK OUT TICKETS TO SELL, THEN YOU OWN THE MONEY OR RETURN THE TICKETS. TICKETS NEED TO BE INDIVIUAL NUMBERED. COUNTERFEIT TICKETS?
WE ARE GIVING AWAY AN $80,000 COBRA!!
WINNING A KIRKHAM COBRA WOULD BE GREAT BUT HELPING CF CHILDREN WOULD BE FANTASIC!!
LETS NOT FORGET THE CAUSE.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taxes - We Don't Need No Stinkin Taxes
Federal income tax would be based on the fair market value of what you win - if the car is valued at $125,000 and you pay $25.00 for the ticket - you would add $124,975 to your other income for 2003 and pay income tax based on your tax bracket.
State taxes are based on the state you live in - both income and sales tax. Here in Texas, no state income tax, but would have to pay sales tax on some amount, probably fair market value again, when vehicle is registered.

I don't think raffle tickets are deductible as a contribution, no matter what organization is running the raffle, or who benefits. If you are getting something for your money, in this case a chance to win a Kirkham, then you didn't "donate" to the charity. You bought a chance to win. If you want to deduct the money you have to just give it with no strings (or raffle) attached.
I don't think that will discourage many folks from participating in the raffle, but it will keep them out of trouble with the IRS!
Accountants, chime in if I'm wrong.

Raffle Tickets Are Not Deductible, but...
Jim,
You are correct in that raffle tickets are not deductible as a contribution, but the cost of the one ticket that won the prize is used to reduce the value of the prize...I believe.

I don't know how to set it up, but could somebody that does make a poll for the CC members to vote on the dollar amount for the tickets? I personally think $50 is a fair price to pay. I think the amounts to vote on should be $100, $50 and $25. No more, no less. Lets get this done.
