Cool Racers, show me your seats!

I'm looking to replace the stock low back seats in my Factory Five. They look great, but suck for racing use.

All you racers, show me what you have.

Here's what I'm looking for. My car is used for a wide variety of things. Lots of street use. I love to race as much as possible, but $$$ limits the amount of open track events I can attend. So, I'll do about 10-15 autox events, 2-3 open track events and many Sunday cruises this season (plus probably DVSFIII). I'm looking for something protective, supportive and affordable. Has anyone tried the Jegs seats? I like their pro high back race seat, but am concerned about its' 20" width fitting well in the car.

I know my Club Cranky compadres have lots of suggestions. Lets' hear it.

Steve

Klayfish,
I'm using the Cobra Classic seat. It has much better side support. It is a tubular frame construction. Got them from http://autotoystore.com/
and were very reasonable....like 185 each.

See you at Pocono with Club Cranky,
Roscoe

Steve,
If you really want a racing seat get a Kirkey aluminim economy racing seat about $125 with high back, rib supports and Vinyl cover. Uncomfortable as hell on the street but will keep you from sliding around in the seat while on the track. If a racing seat feels too comfortable it is probably too big. It must fit tight in order to work properly.

Make the racing seat easily removable so you can put the comfortable seat in for cruising.

BTW any offers for original Connelly leather Cobra seats that I have no use for.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Roscoe, your seats look sharp, but I definitely want a high back seat. I was trying to remember what type of seats the other guys had when I was at Pocono with Club Cranky.
Cranky, are those aluminum racing seats really THAT uncomfortable for street cruising? Jegs sells the aluminum Kirkey economy seat for $85 plus $50 for the cover. But they also have a "pro high back seat", part number 555-70200, which looks it may be a little more comfortable, yet still provide good support.

Steve,
If you like a nice wraparound for street/track with a headreast then go to the site I posted above and take a look at the Koenig Speedster seat. They are pricey and come only in leather.

Thumbs down Comfortable racing seats

Steve,
The Kirkey seats have no padding,0, none, all they have is a vinyl cover. Some guys come with their own built in padding but if I recall you are not one of those guys. I put some foam padding under and in the back of my seat and it helps. For 30 minuites of track time it is no problem but I took a two hour ride last spring and I could barely walk after extracating myself from the vehicle.
The more I turn the car into a track car the less fun it is to drive on the street.

Cranky, I need new seats, do you have pictures of the Connelly seats? Will they adapt easily to an ERA?

Cheers, Pete C

Cranky,
You're right, no extra padding on me. Now my wife..... well, that's another story. Since I have to drive the car everywhere, I think I'll have to get something with padding for now. I'll shop racerwholesale site, but if I don't find anything, I may try these Jegs seats. Worst case I can always return them.

If you want to spend the money, you can get Sparco, JDM, Corbeau or Recaro. All have models priced from about 450.00 per set up to a couple of grand. Check on ebay.

Most of these brands are very comfortable. They are dual purpose race and everyday seats that can be purchased with an adjustable back.

GeorgiaSnake

Yes on the Audi TT in Silver--should be only color they offer. In another year or so, there will be a revised model with the 4.2 V8 I have in my A6.

It'll run like Sherman through....oops--that is GEORGIASnake, isn't it? Well--you know what I mean.

The Kirkey is a good inexpensive choice and many in the road race game go with the Kirkey Basic Drag seat. The sides aren't as high as on most road racing seats, but high enough to keep your hiney in place and not so high that you whack your elbow everytime you shift, which happens with many others. It also doesn't have the wings at the top which makes your side to side vision much better.

klayfish,

I think you might like the Kirkey "road racing" seat. I found a good selection and photos at Behrents racing seats http://www.behrents.com which is well padded, upholstered and offers a headrest.

I can't afford one yet but this would be my choice. Maybe I'll buy one for the driver side and then go for the passenger side later.

Also try Richardson Racing Products at http://www.rrpinc.com
