I never knew Steve or his family but when I read this a bad feeling came over me. It's the same feeling I had recently when I got a call late at night that my daughter was in an crash. I was told she was ok, but for a moment the world ended. She hit water in the road at 70 mph an spun out into a guard rail totaling the car.
I felt guilty because I never should have let her drive my car in the first place. (A highly modified Trans Am). The reality is it could of happened in any car.
I have since put her in a Buick and I'm steering my soon to be driving son toward a truck.
Cobra accidents shouldn’t scare you away from owning or building a Cobra. Just be realistic about how much horsepower you need in a street car. Perform safety checks on a regular basis and make sure you have seat belts for you and the passenger and you wear them. Maybe think cruising when on the street and autocross or drags when you want to go fast.
I can’t say if any of this advice would have helped Steve but lets all do a reality check and go forward in our lives and maybe, just maybe conversations like these and the memory of Steve and others will save someone in the future.
My sincere condolences go out to Steve's family. Ed

our family's deepest sympathy to the famlies of the deceased and to the injured and their families as well...it is with sadness when anyone is lost, especially when it could be due to some unexplainable event.

may all involved recover quickly, both physically and mentally, from this unfortunate incident. peace. bill.

Unhappy

I didn't know any of the families involved but they have my deepest sympathy. I have seen to many of these things in my life and it never gets easier.

Jeff, I have been with police investigators at accident scenes and sometimes the high rate of speed is based on more than just miles per hour. I have seen a high rate of speed tag on accidents where the actual speed was around 45 miles an hour and the speed limit was 60. I agree with you that the fact the car was a Cobra probably had some influence and also the fact that there were signs that the wheels had gone off the pavement. But as most know, it doesn't take a lot of speed and power to get sideways on a crooked road when coming back onto the pavement after having a couple of wheels in the gravel and especially entering a curve. Not trying to start any argument or disagree with you at all. I just hope that we can all learn by this tragedy and as I said above, I couldn't feel worse for the families involved if they were friends of mine. Also unfortunately the high rate of speed is kind of like piolet error in plane crashes. When they have no skid marks or anythig to go on that can become a kind of catch all. I just hope we don't have to read of any more of these tragedies.

Ron

I think some people have mistaken the quest for full details of this accident to be people's morbid curiosity, and that is far from the truth.

Everyone is likely looking for the exact details for the same reason as me......to find out exactly what went wrong so that I can avoid replicating this accident or a something similar.

I'm sure that Steve (or any one of us) would hope that by sharing details of our accidents on this forum, we may help save a life by encouraging caution and responsbility.

Perhaps one of us will tread more lightly under the same conditions (once they are known) or just tread more lightly in general.

Very sad. Very sad.

Be careful. Never forget that you are driving a very small, very light car that has little or no impact protection and that has tremendous power regardless of whether its a BB or SB.

Very sad.

Drive safely and use common sense.

My deepest sympathies to all the families involved. This really hits home, as a builder my main concern has always been the safety of these cars. I don't think I could live with myself knowing that a car I have built was involved in a fatal crash.

Please, everyone, respect the power and understand the capabilities of what you are driving.

It can all change in an instant.

THE FAMILIES MUST BE DEVASTATED AND WE SHOULD FEEL FOR THEM AND THE INJURED.
PLEASE REMEMBER, HOWEVER, "VEHICLES COLLIDE ALL THE TIME".
SOME ARE TRUCKS, SOME ARE SEDANS, OR COMPACTS, ETC. ACCIDENTS HAPPEN IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, RAIN, NARROW ROADS, ALL CONDITIONS, ALL VEHICLES.
EVEN IF STEVE AND HIS PASSENGER WERE KILLED IN HIS FAMILY CAR, WE HAVE LOST A "COBRA GUY".
WE ARE ALL "COBRA GUYS".
IT COULD HAVE BEEN ANY OF US ON ANY ROAD, AT ANY TIME, IN "ANY CAR". FAULT SHOULD NOT OUR ISSUE.

MY CONDOLENCES TO ALL,
B. SMITH

Very sorry to hear about this terrible accident. Condolences to Steve's family and in their knowledge that Steve died whilst doing something that he enjoyed, driving his Cobra.

Over the last two days I have read everyones post and I wanted to add something meaningful that might comfort the family and friends of Steve. However, I can't come up with any new views or words for this situation.
All I can say is that my thoughts and prayers go out to Steve's wife and children and all those that will miss him and his friend.

This was a horriable accident and I hope it will inspire us all to become better drivers and to learn the correct way to react to a highway defensive move in our Cobra's. Unfortunately, sometimes bad things happen to good people that are unavoidable.

Stay safe everyone.

Clois

Default Are we doing anything?

Is anyone taking up a collection for the family to at least send flowers or something?? I don't know these people nor what his wife thinks of Cobras at this point but it would be nice to let them know that we are thinking of them.
