Default Ebay Midstates Weight?

Does anyone have hard cold factual data on the weight of thier Cobra? The text for this Midstates on Ebay says 3004 Lbs! I've seen another brand listed on Ebay, albiet with a 302, claiming that it weighed 1950! Can they both be correct? Admittedly, the Midstates Lit says that weights vary from 2400 to 2900 Lbs. Even this seems like a huge range to me. I've been assuming that most of these cars comparably equipped are within 100-150 Lbs of each other. Do I now need to add another variable to my purchasing decision?

There is a lot of variation from one make to another. Last September at our Minnesota meeting a bunch of cars were put on the race scales. If my memory serves correctly the range was from about 2100# to 2800#. Engine weight has some effect, but the biggest variable is in the body construction. As you might expect, the FFR cars are very light due to aluminum inner panels and light body construction. On the other hand, Midstates are at the heavy end due to lots of steel reinforcement, thick layups, inner liners for hood and trunk lid, steel tunnel liner, etc.

Default Midstates weight

My Midstates car weighed in at 2650 at Bandimere Speedway in Denver - but you have to put the altitude correction in so it probably weighs more (just kidding). I have a 428, toploader, and 9" rear with the Lincoln brakes. I have the round-tube frame and I do not know how it compares in weight with the rectangular tubing frame.

Put in a 460 and automatic tranny - maybe you could hit 3000. I did not look at ebay, what is the motor/transmission/rearend configuration?

ColoradoCobra,

The configuration of the Midstates on Ebay is 427 Side Oiler, Toploader, 9" rear, 4" tube chassis. Don't understand why it weighs so much more than yours when it is so similar.

jwoodard and rdorman,

Thanks for the posts. 400 pounds difference between a Lonestar and a cast iron Unique! I may have to change my short list. Anybody else have weight for some other brands. I would prefer a lighter car because of the potential for improved handling characteristics as opposed to the brand with the best body.

Default Heavyweights

Dave,

The biggest difference I can see is that I have aluminum heads versus iron on the ebay car. Subtract the driver and the car weighs 2800 - 150 more than mine. Still doesn't make up the difference but who knows how accurate the scales are anyway?

Your driving ambitions may point to a lighter weight car - they all have their points and counterpoints. As a street car my goal was to have one that would look as good ten years from now as it does today - so far so good.

Good luck,

Gary

My Excalibur with half tank of gas and MINUS driver was right at 2700. 302, 9" rear. I thought this was TO heavy and I was a little disappointed. Weight is EVERYTHING in a Cobra, BB or SB (thats "bulbs", by the way).

As Dick Kjos pointed out in an earlier reply, I weighed 14 Cobra's from different manufacturers last September at our "Snakes in the Grass" event. Here are the results:
FFR w/small block (302) 2230#
FFR w/small block (302) 2263#
SUPERFORMANCE w/ 392 al. hd,steel flywhl 2560#
SUPERFORMANCE w/351 stl hds,al flywhl 2570#
INTEGRITY motor not known 2610#
B & B w/small block 2619#
Hi-Tec w/bbf iron heads 2663#
EVERETT-MORRISON motor not known 2735#
CLASSIC motor not known 2759#
SUPERFORMANCE w/ 460 al hds 2765#
MIDSTATES w/bbf 2825#
MIDSTATES w/BBC 2844#
MIDSTATES unknown motor 2862#
EVERETT-MORRISON w/bbf 2918#

The cars were weighed with INTERCOMP SW1 scales (very accurate)

I previously weighed another SUPERFORMANCE 392 stroker /al hds and stl flywhl @2540#

These are the facts guys, keep in mind the 302's are almost 100# lighter than Windsors, not all cars had the gas tanks topped off( gasoline is almost 7# per gallon)

All in all it was an interesting exercise and confirmed what each owner already knew.

NRP/MN/Mike,

Thanks for the post. It may have confirmed what Cobra owners already knew, but it has been difficult for this non-owner to obtain accurate information about weight. I can now tell from your data that some Manufacturers have been downright untruthful with me when I asked about this in phone conversations, to the tune of about 400 Lbs.

Default weight for my Unique

My Unique has been weighed twice on two sets of scales with identical results so I am positive about the weight. Some factors that would make my car lighter is it does not have the optional aluminum over the glass under the hood and it does not have a roll bar.
