Where can I find a Cobra for rent?
Hi, I'm a newbie to this board, so please be gentle! My husband's dream is to own a Cobra, and hopefully one day that will happen, but right now our finances (and 2 kids under 3!) do not allow for that. So, I want to do the next best thing and find somplace to rent a Cobra for him to have a guy's weekend zooming around in his dream car.
We live in Austin, Texas, and I had seen a similar post from last August recommending Glenn Garrett at Hill Country Motorsports in Wimberley. However, the phone number (512-847-0072) is disconnected and the website ( www.hillcountrymotorsports.com) errors out, too. Does anyone know if he's moved and perhaps have his new contact info? Or any other recommedations for sompeplace else I could rent a Cobra? Anywhere in Texas, Oklahoma or Louisiana would be within reason, although naturally I'd prefer Texas just so I can see the car, too. We went to an exotic car rental place in Las Vegas last year but they had just sold their old Cobra and hadn't yet received the new one. I appreciate any help you can give me.
This isn't really related, but can you be a member of the Texas Club if you're just a dreamer and don't yet have a Cobra?
Thanks!

I'm sure some of the TCC guys will jump in and offer some help.
You should try and contact Hogtied, a member here from the Dallas area.
Last summer, she had the same question and "lived the dream" at a Vegas rental.
Here's the thread:

Good luck.

hello,
of course you can. just goto www.texascobraclub.com , You are more than welcome to goto any of the monthly meetings and meet everyone as well. Great chance to look at the different cars and be involved. Heck, you can probably catch a ride with some of the guys too.
We don't live in austin anymore (Boerne now), but usually try to make it up for the monthly meetings.
I'm not sure about hill country motorsports.

Join the local Cobra club and get to know the members. Many will let him and you ride and even drive in their cars (with them present).
If you ever go to Las Vegas, one of the car rentals there use to rent (and probably still does) Cobras and other exotics.

Last year mid February in Las Vegas we rented a Superformance from a place called Rent-A-Vette. It was a new 3rd generation car, 351 crate motor, finished by House of Cobras. Maroon with a white stripe. $300 for the entire day. We had a great drive through Red Rock Canyon. This actually sold me on Superformance. 2 months later we bought a used SPF through Doug Reed.
When I told Doug about this, he said he just sold a car to a client in the Austin area that was planning on renting out. You may want to give Doug a call (800-29-SNAKE), and try to locate these people.

Well, so far it looks like Las Vegas is the only place to find a Cobra to rent. I guess I'll have to look into booking him a trip a little later thi summer. Until then, I'll check out the TCC site to find out when the next Austin meetibg is.
Thanks for the offer, Fred, but Massachusetts is a little further away than we wanted to go.
And I also left a message with Doug Reed just in case he remembers the name of the person in the Austin area who plans on renting one.
Thanks!

Lisa...you have stolen our hearts! Whatta woman!
I was only partially kiddin'. My beef-cooking ability has no equivalent (careful word-choice there!). Go to my Gallery! You'll also see what Maine holds for visitors. Maybe I'll assault Texas instead---batten down the hatches! Daughters of Texas, lock up your mothers!!!! Good luck Lisa. Follow the advice of the old salts on this site. And, no kiddin', a lot of us envy your husband!!!

Their used to be one for rent in Waikiki,,,,,but they replaced it with a Viper. $350 a day, your choice, Viper, Ferrari, Hummer but no Lambos.
I'm thinking about renting the Viper and doing a little SCCA thing.........

Update just in case you want to know
Ronnie from Superperformance was kind enough to return my call and was able to solve the mystery about Hill Country Motorsports. It turns out that the person he sold the Cobra to in the Austin area was Glenn Garrett, but he has now relocated to California, which is why I couldn't reach him with his old contact info. I'm starting to think maybe we should open up an exotic car rental place in Austin so we'll have an excuse (and funding!) to get a Cobra. Of course, I really have to think about that some more, because if I were to mention it to my husband, we'd have to do it. He even knows someone at the Texas Film Commission, so it would be easy to get on their list . . .
I'm really bummed that we just missed the TCC meet in Austin. Matt would have had a blast seeing all those Cobras! Unfortunately, my office had our annual convention that week so I'd been working 60 hour weeks leading up to the convention and didn't have time to find this site until this week. We may see if we can join the March meeting of the Austin group in Elgin. The only problem with that is that then it blows my surprise of renting the Cobra for him.
Maine will be looking pretty attractive later this summer when we're having 100 degree days, so maybe I'll take you up on your offer then.
Thanks,
Lisa

Lisa,
Just wait until SB-708 passes and is signed in California and you can have your pick of Cobras and any other type of vehicle that is not at least 45 years old at very cheap prices. You could really start an exotic vehicle rental then. I know I would sell my cars for anything I could get before I let our Emperor have them crushed.

Lisa (and Hubbie).....
.......just follow the guy in the black Acura (the one who ends up with the bowl of chowdah!)....he skids out on the main fishing dock in my town of Five Islands, Maine! You are of course welcome (I've invited lots of other cobraholics from this site--first come get the beds---follow up sleep on the porch or the sailboat). Parking will be hysterical! If you seriously want to duck the Texas frying-pan--you're welcome! My wifey will have by then (no doubt) thrown me off the 'Cape and I'll be up there for the duration of August. It is "Ledgemere's" 100th birthday, so masses of loonies will be arriving announcedly and otherwise, some by water, some by cah and some? Pile on! Semper steaks and lobsters! Butter! The head carediologist from MGH will be present! Fear nothing!
