Chaplin,

They didn't say what they would do about the "first" titler, but they still have to decide how to deal with the other states, etc. Most of the cars were done "through" a dealer, and that is who the DMV is after. They likely don't care about the little fish.

Dave

P.S. For the DMVer's that are listening, my suggestion is to work a deal with your state smog group (whoever they are). Figure out a registration process, publish it on the web in PDF format, let the end-user down load it, fill it out and send it in with a big check (they will pay it - they will grumble, but they will pay it), and sendf them a smog exeption, and send them to the state police (CHP, etc.) to get a VIN. Everybody wins!

Just think, if SB 708 passes, (which moves the smog-exemption date back from 1974 to 1959(!?!?!?!!), all these questions will be moot. Some State Senator wants to do this to make up for dirty air. How he picked 1959 is beyond me. I would leave it at 1974 permanently. Besides, all the post-'73 cars were ugly!

Guys - What I don't think your understanding is that the CA DMV had NO PROCEDURES in place for registering these types of cars over the past year or more. They are only looking at cars that have ALREADY been registered, NOT UNDER SB100. Everyone else should be fine with SB100 in place and be able to register as a 2003 specality constructed vehicle.

Um...There is an easy and clear path:

http://www.cobratrader.com/registrationCA.html

Registration in California is easy, it's simple, and - above all - it doesn't involve jail time and vehicle impounding if you do it right.

It's my understanding that the cars that show up if your car isn't registered correctly are CHP and DMV investigative vehicles, as well as a Sheriff's officer - who is the one who's supposed to serve the search warrant.

While this thread does wander admirably all over the place, the bottom line is that - if your car isn't registered properly (see my webpage), then you need to correct it before your car and registration get flagged.

Your pal,
Meat.

The Republik of Kalifornia is out revenueing-and using the AAA with guns to do it.
Who the #@ck are they to tell another state how to register cars in that state?

Here's a senario:Kit car purchased(from another state)as a roller. No drive line or paint(engine just sitting in the frame)Take it down to AAA an register it.Claim the appropriate value which i will call "X" dollars.

When the car is finished,it is now worth "Z" dollars. The state looks at this and cries that i,you,we defrauded them of their share of the pie.
(As far as their "share" goes they shouldn't get a dime-but that's another story)

"I"(you,me,us,)did not defraud anyone of anything."X" was the value at time of registration. If it is now worth "Z" oh,well.

Here in Az.,i walked into DMV and said i have a replica of a 65 Cobra.I walked out with plates and registration for a 65.

So,some states will do it.Kalifornia will not. They want to get every friggin' dime out of you Kalifornians that they can.

The ones saying"we haves ways of registering replicas here in Ca.-we should use them" are just bending over for the state. This is $&#&ing obscene.
And to suggest that the rest of us become sheeple is sickening.

Meat - Um...Thanks for pointing out to me just how to find out the way to register my car in California. If I ever move there, I'm sure it will come in real handy. Maybe you didn't notice that it says, just under my name, that I live in Florida.

Um...Thanks again for being your usual thoughtful self.

Agro,

Think dropping your profile here would ever stop the CA officials from knowing just how far from Palo Alto you really are?? Your greatly mistaken........Don't forget, when using a dedicated IP address (or even when using DHCP), any law enforcement official can track you right to the computer your using.........If they really want to, they already know who you are............Paranoid, look in the mirror and ask yourself that very question............From an outsider, it certainly sounds like you are.............As for me, NJ DMV and I have a wonderful relationship, I have nothing to hide, and they already know it...................

mr mustang...i had the same thoughts...he lambasts the police, takes a cocky 'cant get me ' attitude and then deletes all his profile data....i had the following post of mr agro1's from oct 02 archived regarding discussion as to jet coat/ stainless steel side pipes etc . interesting indeed in his post as i wonder if he is still driving that unregistered spf on calif city streets illegally or did he perhaps register it , hey, maybe as a 65, maybe using TU ? LOL....yep, i bet there are some officers following this thread that just can't wait to meet mr agro1 on the street , especially in an unregistered spf or perhaps a TU 65 special....agro1, is the following still true : LOL :

Fixit - WHAT ???? I agree, but I like loud and don't drive the car much on
the street at all, it isn't even registered...However, I do not like shiney
and was wondering if I could just hollow out my current pipes but I'm being
told they will not allow enough back-pressure. I'd much rather keep my black
ones, hollow them out and have them ceramic coated (I found a place that
does it for $20/ft).

For those of you relying on SB-100 take a close look at SB-708 due to be voted on the 25th of this month. The way the bill is written even you are going to have to make your cars meet emissions as determined by the state. I also read it as doing away with SB-100 completely. Time to start looking for a 1958 car of some time until that idiot Flores can write another bill to push it back to the early 1900s. And Emperor Davis already has the pen ready to sign SB-708. After all he signed SB-100 to get the car vote for re-election and now no longer feels he needs any of the working class or regular people. God, it must be tiring sitting on that pedestal he and his ass kiss---- have put themselves on. If they can sell the big polluters the right to dump tons of pollution into the air, why can't I buy the right for the pound or so I put out in a couple of years ? They just sold Kanuf the right to continue to put out huge amounts of pollution above what they are allowed because it would cost them to much money to make that smokestack meet the requirements. Kanuf's reply. We are a smokestack industry wheather the people like it or not. If it bothers them then they are free to move.

I think some in here are mistaken when they make certain assumptions... I may be one of them myself.

Here are a few:

1-If you have a car that will accept a 1965 model engine, you should be subjected to the emissions that applied to that engine.
WRONG.!
You can't put an engine in a vehicle older than the model year of the vehicle hoping the engine alone would make you smog exempt.

2-If you have a kit/roller/completed/incomplete Cobra from Kirkhams, Shelby, Everett Morrison what have you..you don't have a 1965 model car. You have something that looks like a car built in 1965. That is all. The car is still 2003.
If the state ,insisted that you put in an engine closer to the vintage of the year of manufacture, you and I would stuck with a box of expensive engine parts. Can you say E-Bay?

3-Take advantage of SB-100. If you do all will be well.
WRONG!
They gave it and they can taketh away...

4-I don't live in California, it doesn't effect me.
WRONG!
Look at all the wonderful regulations we have managed to export to other states. Both in areas of personal freedom restriction and revenue raising.Gun ownership, smoking, emissions, etc.

5-They are only after 19 or 29 or 39 cars, that were registered by Titles Unlimited!
WRONG!
They have the goods on Titles Unlimited. TU has been advertising and operating here in California for a longtime. They want a solid case beginning with TU and ending with........ your guess is as good as mine.

6-They are after Cobras.
WRONG!
There are NOT enough Cobras in California or anywhere else that were improperly registered to make it worth their time. They are after ALL CARS falling into this category. There are far more Hot Rods here and everywhere else that would become the pot of gold they are looking for.

7-If we all register our cars the way California wants us to, there won't be any problem.
WRONG!
500 numbers allowed for special contruction were not all used up last year. They WILL be this year for sure. If we exceed that number, they won't necessarily increase it. They may actually reduce it, under the pretense of the impact of all these smog hog gross polluters, that we are!

8-Meat is here only to help you!
RIGHHHTTTTT!

mrmustang -
Yes, I am paranoid. Furthermore, I am aware that anyone can be located by a dedicated IP - that's fine, I have nothing to hide. But if they can track me by my IP, what's the point of having a profile other than to appease morons like you ? It was there once, and is now again...Feel better now ?

Bill Wells -
That is quite an assumption you make that I take a "cocky cant get me attitude and then deletes all his profile data". My profile data was deleted BEFORE this thread even started and I have never once taken a "can't get me" sort of attitude. On the contrary, I welcome any LEO/DMV as my car IS REGISTERED (SB100) and has been for a while now. I suggest you get your facts straight. I wasn't aware that it was possible for someone to have their head and foot in their A$$ at the same time...Nice try though.

Sorry, I don't mean to get off topic here but...
Man...You guys in CA have to take that state back from the idiots that are running it!!! And I am not talking about just cars here... If you can't tell by my the picture below my name, I am also into shooting BIG guns like 50 BMG rifles... Your state in trying to outlaw them right now too...even though there has NEVER been anybody hurt by one of these guns in the whole US... Thanks Feinstein-FeinSWINE BEEEOOOOTCH....
CobraBill has another GREAT point that we all should be keying on... When I (as an individual, not a business) sell ANYTHING, let alone a car, to anybody, I consider it DOUBLE TAXATION for the state to collect sales taxes AGAIN on said item. CobraBill's point is absolutely correct... If bought from out of state (again by an individual), CA deserves NOTHING to register that vehicle... Of course, dealer sales would not apply to this...
