Default first start up problems

I finally got around to starting my 351c for the first time and it seems that my battery can barely turn the motor over(new optimum fully charged;also tried another battery)I can turn it by hand using pully bolt and it is tight ,but does not seem overly so.I have a new high torque starter.Any advice? thanks;chuck

Have someone turn your car over while you surn your distributor. I bet you timing is either retarded or advanced too much.

Chuck,

Sounds like your battery cables are not connected tightly enough or they're too small. Did you mount the battery in the trunk? I had a similar problem when I set up my car. I used the frame for the ground return. To reduce the resistance at the connections, I disconnected the battery ground cable, scraped off the paint from the steel frame (where the cable touches it), bolted the connection back on, then soldered the 0 gauge cable to the frame with a propane torch and rosin core solder. I did the same thing with the ground cable from the engine to the frame. You do have a ground cable from the engine to the frame, right? No problem since in 15 years.

It could be poor grounds like others mentioned. An improperly shimmed starter will exhibit the same sympotms, cause its gear is jamming into the flywheel's gear, inhibiting rotation.

RalleySnake and Ron is right my ground was not good enough so I not only cleaned off a spot on my frame but I also took a 0 gauge short cable over to my block. No problems since.

thanks for the help guys;Mr. Fixit,do you mean shimming the starter with washers so the gear does not go in as far?Also ,I definitly have a good spark,even one or two backfires but very slow turnover. chuck

Chuck;
start with some diagostics; that isolate areas.
1. Pull plugs and turn over; if slow; starter, solinode, cable grounds(grounds, GROUNDS!!!) they can't be over enphasised; you need two or three. I have engine starter bolt to frame, bell houseing to grn bus. battery neg to frame in rear of car.

If fast; timing? Too small cables- can't take starter amp load
Do you know if starter is good?

Yank the coil wire and try to turn it over. I have 2 ground straps on mine and have no problems. Jim

AS far as the starter shimming issue, some scattershields have the hole in the motor plate a bit on the small side,it needs carefull grinding to let the starter sit where it should. Doing this is a last try thing, after you verified that it is not a groud issue, bad starter, too much ignition timing, or any other issue. If you want to try it, don't shim with washers, get the starter shim from NAPA, it spaces the whole unit out about .100".
