eticket,
I'm under the impression that Hagerty doesn't insure Cobras, period.
Look in the "What We Do Not Insure" section of this Hagerty page:

Todd, as you know, most specialty companies are very restrictive in their usage allowance. Hence why they charge so little. I am a special investigator for one of them. But they do allow you to have fun with the car. They just don't want the car used as a daily driver or errand runner. I've reviewed claims where the car was damaged in a store parking lot. If it was determined it was just a pleasure drive and not being used daily, we won't deny the claim.
From my understanding Hagerty does not insure Cobras anymore. Best advice I have is to read the policy carefully, be truthful on the application, and you will have no problems at all. There are several companies who still write Cobras. Condon and Skelly, American Collectors, State Farm, Progressive, etc....

I just purchased a Cobra and had been insured with Grundy with my other collector cars. They said that they were not interested in Cobras and could not insure me even with the other cars with them. I called Hagerty and they said the same. My American Family Agent quoted me a annual cost of approx $300. only with written appraisal...

I'm using State Farm.... tried the others and was told, "we don't do replica Cobra's." State Farm is very reasonable, with annual mileage restriction. I much perfer to deal with an agent that I can deal with eyeball-to-eyeball, and State Farm meets that requirement.

American Family was mentioned as a possibility for insurance as well as Progressive. Keep in mind these Companies only write cars on a stated amount or actual cash value. Your best option is an agreed value.
Many times when you call an agency the agent is not familiar with cars enough to know that a Cobra is not a Mustang. Most of the standard market companies will not insure "kit cars". I know some are not actually kit cars but they look at them all that way since they are not made by Chevy, Ford, Dodge etc.
I don't blame insureds being concerned about not being able to sit eye to eye with their agent but keep in mind the agent sells insurance and is really not involved with the loss payments. Make sure your agent knows what the vehicle is and you answer questions on apps correctly.
I have found that most Cobra owners are about 50 plus in years of age and this is their "mid life crisis playtoy". I enjoy talking cars with the guys or gals that call and we would be happy in helping you insure your Cobras or answering insurance questions.
You can reach us by email at robbin@dtnspeed.net or on our website at www.midwestclassicins.com or give us a call at 888-271-4000. We do not write in all 50 states but we are capable of obtaining coverage in 44 of them.
Thanks,
Robbin

Regarding Grundy, it must depend on what kind of mood the person is in you're talking to, or maybe they just love Armenians, or lawyers, or Kirkhams...no clue, but I had no problem getting insurance from them last year. Talking to the agent, I got the same impression as Klayfish explains is the reality...they want to see that you're using it as a collector car and not a daily driver.
No mileage restrictions, and a high agreed value.
I'm up for renewal...let's see if they change their minds.
