It's just too short!
Is it just me? Do you find that the dash mirror is just too short to see over the back of the car? With the top on, it's even worse. I can barely see the cars behind in the top third of the mirror.
I know, in Gumball Rally, the Ferrari driver rips off the mirror and says, "anything behind you doesn't matter", or something to that effect. But in the traffic on the 405 you gotta see how close that semi tractor-trailer is.
I keep thinking of ways to raise it about an inch. I don't really want to cut the shaft and epoxy a tube in the middle, but this seems to be the best way. Anyone have a better idea?
Paul

I have a spacer under the base. It's made from 6061-T6 and polished.

On of the guys in our club bought a suction cup mounted mirror from an auto store. When he uses his top, he just sticks the mirror on and doesn't worry about the normal one. Goes on and off in a jiffy and no mods to the stock mirror.

Clip on convex mirror attched to upper left corner of windshield. They let you see everything, they cost about $2 and you can put it on / take it off in 10 seconds. Don't expect to see much with the top on, reguardless. What do you have the top on for, you live in socal.

Wow! Four great answers before the auto parts store closes! I knew you guys would come through.
Mr Fixit, Did you read my last Rally Report? It was either the top or SCUBA gear!
Gettin' ready for the next BIG one on April 26. It just has to be sparkling. Sometimes I think of my car like a helicopter. You gotta work on it 4 hours to fly it 1 hour.

I did the same as Scottj----notice the make of my car. I'm going to do the same (1" or so) under the side mirrors. Good Luck.

It seems to me that there are a couple of British cars that had center rods between the base of the windshield and the top of the frame, onto which a mirror was clamped...

Scott and Fred,
I suppose you machined the spacer in a rectangular shape a little larger than the base of the mirrior? Or, did you get fancy and do an oval shape? I wish someone made these....

I rounded the corners on a beltsander, polished it with a 3M scotch-brite wheel in a grinder, and shined it up with Flitz.

I couldn't see anything in mine so I glued it to the windshield.

Mike,
How did you get the flat mirror base to stick to the curved glass? Neat trick! I see you used a convex side mirror. I like the red, (I LOVE RED!). It appears to be a dark shade. What color is it?
Scott,
You didn't use the Bridgeport at all? It's no fun going to the machine shop unless I can crank up the mill!

Finishline sells the center tensioner rod. Check anyone that sells MGB parts and they should have the mirror that attaches to a rod. I bought the mirror from . Victoria British Only problem with the mirror is that the backside is gold colored.

Paul,
Yep, I milled it & drilled it on the bridgeport. I would have liked to have made it on the CNC and left it a machined finish, but I spend so much time making racecar pars for my buddies that I don't have the time to do my own stuff.

I bought a raydot miror from Autozone and used the glue on pad. I cut up the mirror so that all I used was the piece that slips over the pad with a short rod with a ball on the end that I could attach my original style mirror to.
It's not really as dark as it looks in the picture, it's a 2001 Audi Amulet Red.

Jerry,
I have a tensioner rod. But, I only use it to hold the hardtop down. I wouldn't want to use it to support the mirror, it's too thin. Thanks for the idea though.
Mike,
That's nice work. I like the idea of the double pivots. However, I would not want to mount it quite so high. If I put it that high it would block my view. The perfect place (for me) would be where the top edge of the mirror is even with the top of the hood scoop (behind it). When I have the top on, every square inch of windshield is critical. I'm always bending my neck to see under it. or around the windshield post. Gotta keep track of those invisable motorcycles! I'll go by Autozone on the way home. I guess that windshield cement will work OK on Lexan?
Scott,
You get to play with a CNC machine! Man, now I'm jealous.
Paul
