Shelby authorizes CSX Glass Daytona Coupes
I was on the SAI sight and saw a blurb about authorizing Lee Benson to make a run of 10 CSX 7000 chassis fiberglass Daytona Coupes. At 80, I hope I have the same amount of enery that Shel has.

The details are not out yet. I would check the SAI thread or call Lee for the updates.

Sounds to me like ol'Shel, after having his ass handed to him by the replica industry, has become very familiar with the term, "If ya can't beat'em, join'em". Just another reason why I didn't and would never buy anything that sellout endorses...
In the meantime I'll be in the basement with my firesuit on -

Cas - Maybe he'll use the body from an original and they'll be in the Registry alongside Eleanor...

Agro,,,while your down there in the basement, turn off the flame thrower, it's getting hot in here.
I tell you, the breaking news swirling around SAI right now is breath taking! 427 SHELBY Cobras from Africa, Coupe bodies right here in the US, questions about what "makes" a Shelby different than others. What next? Shelby popcorn? LOL

Don't you know about the ten coupe bodies he kept in a closet since '65?
They are planning on finishing all thirteen.
17 will sold as "special anniversary limited edition models"
The remaining 29 will be available with original DAYTONA tyre air in the tires.
All 67 will be at the 30th anniversary celebration in 2005.
Dang, this is too easy. It used to take real WORK to be a smartarse...

If anyone can do it....
Shel has McClusky on his side so if he needed a really accurate fiberglass mold made from an original body, he wouldn't have to go very far. Most kit car manufacturers can't get all that close to a real coupe no less take a mold from one(I know contemporary did it a long time ago but the project never seemed to take off).
Then getting the rest right is merely having a real one to copy detail from or McClusky involved. From what I have seen so far, the other manufacturers might make good cars but, the look is only somewhat reminicent of what it really looks like. I hope he does it right, I might entertain a weber powered crate motor daily driver. Yes, you will see me in the rain and light snow!!!
BUT BUT BUT, do you think Evan will be in back of me in one or just standing guard around his????
Ya can fit the velvet ropes and possibly the stantions in a coupe.

It was a News Release on the SA News page:
All-Pro Announces Daytona Coupe
3/24/03
All-Pro Cars is building a series of Daytona Coupes on CSX7000-series chassis, specially built and modified. The body is fiberglass and conforms to the dimensions of the World Championship units.
There are only ten scheduled initially exclusive to All-Pro and CSX numbers are assigned and will be noted as special Daytona units in the SAAC Registry by Shelby American, Inc.
This is NOT Shelby doing ( or driving) this; it's an All-Pro Coupe. Benson is a dealer who placed the order for 10 CSX7000 platforms to do a value-add deal.
SAI accepted the order, as anyone would.
Be fair, this is no big deal.
(...and I do hope Mr. Bruce gets the order for the bodies)

Good point Steve.
Mark IV,,,,your math is bizzare, you must have went to Shelbyville Math Class. Somehow,,,,the numbers add up correctly there.

BTW..
..does anyone know where the RAREST Shelby vehicle is. I am refering to the "CS" DC3 "vomit comet"? Is this aircraft now flying pigs and chickens in Guatamala?
I mean there are 6 coupes, multiple "King Cobras", several GT 500 prototypes but only one airplane.

Just Think..........
How many 1967 427 Corvettes are out there as opposed to how many were originally made? Or big block Chevelle and Camaro's that were made from 6 cylinder cars.
The bottom line is that if it has a CSX number on it and it is in the registry, however and whatever the smoke and mirrors that went in to make it plays out, it will always be a Shelby. I didn't understand the draw to that supercharged car but, I know they have sold more than one, so go figure.

Well it is fascinating news! And while trying to be "nice" about it, it does raise some questions about "authenticity" issues.
Since this is an "All-Pro Coupe" that will carry a CSX number I GUESS that means they build a "really good Coupe" all ready? If so, how accurate is it? Will the "new order" of 10 be any different in some way? Was the mold splashed from a real Coupe?
This DOES blur the line between what "consitutes" a "real" Shelby in my mind, I mean I'm "really" confused! Does C.S. himself need to be involved in some meaningful way for it to be "authentic"?
I think I'm beginning to understand how the whole "marketing" thing works. Like the Shelby Omnis, I would guess that deal was little more than a C.S. marketing promotion. Hey, thats OK I guess, maybe thats just the way business is done by everyone in the car world? Or the South African connection to the 427 Cobras, whats up with that? Same kind of thing?
OK, OK, it's marketing. Clearly the name "Shelby" is a very powerful marketing tool. The man has a right to use it how ever and where ever he can. It will be awesome having some Coupes around to drool over.
sigh..........but something is lost when it all boils down to a "signature" only series car.

Depending on where the price falls we will see if any of it makes sense. You can buy an exact Replica of a coupe from McClusky for somewhere in the $300,000+ area. Serial number or no serial number, it will always be just a great clone. If the glass coupe can be had at a reasonable price, I always thought it was a good idea to be in a Shelby serial number car for a low number. That's why I did 4027 and as you all know , it worked out well for me. If I afford a coupe and make it as exact can be, drive it and enjoy it, sounds like a deal to me...

Steve, no question about the value of having that CSX number, and a low one at that, REGARDLESS of HOW the car got the number.
As I've mentioned before: If I'm fuzzy about what constitutes a "real" Shelby car now, what will it be like when C.S. passes on? And I wish him a LONG and PROSPEROUS life!!!!!!
Will that be all there is? Will "real" Shelbys be no more, forever? It may well happen that way. It's tempting enough to BUY a car for the SOLE reason it DOES have a CSX number. Perhaps, for nothing more than the investment potential. And you get to drive it too???? It can't get any better than that!
Elvis has left the building, but his LEGACY continues to make BIG money. After Enzo passed there was a heck of a spike in prices, now slowing and/or falling off for most of the Ferrarri models, but NOT all! Clearly the original 60's car's will climb into the stratosphere with time. What will become on the "also rans" with CSX numbers, the glass body cars, etc.? I think they will do OK, maybe better? Wish I had a crystal ball here!

I wonder if the next iteration is a CSX 4000 series chassis with a CAV GT40 body?
