Question Ever Wanted to Run the Mt. Palomar Hillclimb??

Hey guys,

The old Mt. Palomar Hillclimb course will be part of the Angel's Crown Rally on April 26. We will see lots of Riverside and San Diego deserts and mountains, too. The rally will end in historic old town Temecula. Believe me, there's no better way to do it than in a Cobra.

into the night rallye team proudly presents:

Angels' Crown 7-hr Monte Carlo style Navigational road rally

*****APRIL 26, 2003*****

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALL LEGAL VEHICLES WELCOME. NO SPECIAL EQUIPMENT REQUIRED. This event is an easy, map-based, backroad-oriented, timed event for first-time entrants and experts alike.

This is not a race. It is intended to be a test of your map-reading and instruction-following capabilities. However, you are expected to run "on time". Think if it as a giant board game, with the roads and landscape of California for a board and you and your car for a game piece.

Opportunities for spirited driving will abound. Paved roads only. 2 people per car (driver and navigator) are suggested. Event runs rain or shine. There are 3 classes: Novice, Regular, and Expert. We suggest you bring a clipboard, pen, paper, 3 different colored highlight markers, and a light inside the car, other than the dome light, to read the maps at night. You'll also need a clock that can set seconds.

The entry fee for this event is only $55 per car. Please preregister if possible. VISA and Mastercard accepted. Send your name, address, phone, and with credit card info and signature, or check/money order payable to ITN, to the address below. If you can't preregister, please call or email us so we will know you are coming. All entries must bring registration, proof of insurance, and your driver's license to the Start.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - SAT. April 26, 2003

Registration/Instruction Location: TA Truck Stop
24265 E. Guasti Rd.
Ontario, CA 91761
909 - 390 - 2525

(Rallye Mobile 310 350 1360)

Registration opens/ Instructions given out: 10:00 AM

Novice Orientation: 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

1st car out of START: 2:01 PM

1st car to FINISH: 10:00 PM (approx.)

This event will cover some of the most remote and picturesque areas of Riverside and San Diego counties. Recent rains have rendered the hills a soft, spring green and the wildflowers are thick everywhere along the course. There are some great roads included in the route, with very little freeway, naturally. We hope it will offer a serious challenge to the experts, a good introduction to rally concepts for the novices, and a fun run for everyone.

I just got a message from the Rallymaster. The entry fee is reduced one half for first time entrants.

Sunday, April 27, Is the "Fabulous Fords Forever" car show at Knott's Berry Farm, in Buena Park, a little north of Disneyland. Original Cobras, replica Cobras, Carroll Shelby hisself!, all sorts of rare and beautiful Fords. Admission is free to the Public. All you going to the Rally on Saturday can stick around, if you can, for the car show on Sunday. ALL the cars are supposed to drive into the parking lot, so the driveway gets a big crowd in the morning. Hope to see a lot of you there!

Terry,

What are the safety rules for Cobras? Roll bar required? Single hoop, OK?

I have a buddy who used to ride his sport bike up there...he said the cops harassed him too much so he stopped going out there. I have no personal experience out there...but thought I'd give a heads up

Joe,

For the hillclimb event, they close the course for racers. The cops get to watch and get paid, too.

Agro,

Man, you missed a great day! We were pushing the limits of traction and gravity for more than 7 hours on some of the best roller coaster roads in Southern California. The views up at the snow capped mountains were almost as good as the views down from the top.

There was a good turnout. Teams with Porsches, Subaru's, Mini Cooper's, BMW's, Corvette's and even a new Mitsubshi Evo Lancer showed up. We upheld our Cobra tradition of passing all of the ones we encountered. The Turbo Porsche gave us the best run but we got him on a 1/4 mile straight (after a tight turn) before his Turbo could spool up.

This was a VERY difficult rally. The rallymaster wrote a course that was hard (for experts) to follow and tightly timed (read that as impossible to get to some checkpoints on time). Checkpoint number ten was found by only one rally car! The very best scoring team had over 1000 penalty points. We made miscalculations that earned over 2000 points (four missed checkpoints). Usually, I am very competitive about trying to win these things. This time, every time we took the wrong road, it was through some of the most beautiful landscape you can imagine! Very steep inclines up, down and through amazing rock formations, pushing as hard as could, I was a very happy camper.

The weather was perfect. I drove most of the day in my Dale Earnhart t-shirt. The car ran perfectly until we got to a checkpoint inmarker road 20 minutes early. We stopped in the darkness and waited under brilliant stars. When I tried to start the engine, it wouldn't! The powerful new lights had sucked the battery down. Ron gave me a push start, but it took three tries. By the time it started and he got into the car, we were late. We gained another 8 penalty points on that one. I'm looking for a better alternator, today!

I fully expected a resignation note from Ron. We were moving so fast that there were times I scared myself and I know that the passenger seat is MUCH more uncomfortable than mine. I burned up more rubber going sideways than on any rally I've ever run. When I talked to Ron earlier, today, he was excited, happy and ready for the next one, what a guy!

We all ended up in a Cowboy bar in Temecula. The BBQ was awesome! After some outstanding tortilla soup and medium rare Tri-tip, we listened as the rallymaster announced the scores and handed out big trophys to some very deserving people

Yeah, Agro, you should have been there!

PAUL,
THE REQUIREMENTS FOR COBRAS RUNNING THE VIRGINIA CITY HILL CLIMB WITH THE SHELBY/FERRARI CLUB ARE THE SAME AS OPEN TRACK. THAT IS TO SAY, SINGLE ROLL BAR, HARNESS, HELMENT, LONGSLEEVE SHIRT, AND PASS TECH. ALSO, CAR MUST HAVE CURRENT STATE REGISTRATION AND INSURANCE. THE TOWN AND LOCAL SHIERFF DEPT. SUPPORT THE EVENT, AND EVEN TAKE A RIDE OR TWO! AM NOT SURE IF THE "RULES" WILL CHANGE THIS YEAR FOR "OPEN" CARS AS LAST YEAR A VIPER WENT OVER THE CLIFT AND BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER WERE KILLED. THAT WAS WITH THE PORSCHE/ QUATRO CLUB. IN THE PASS, PASSENGERS HAVE BEEN ALLOWED. MY SON WILL NO LONGER RIDE WITH ME, GUESS HE IS GROWING UP AT 25. I NOW ONLY RUN THIS WITH MY GT350...NOT AS FAST, BUT A BETTER FEELING. THIS YEARS EVENT WILL BE IN OCTOBER. IF INTERESTED E MAIL ME AND ILL PUT YOU IN TOUCH WITH AN EVENT ORGANIZER.
TERRY

Terry,

Thanks for the info. I found their website. I'll think about this. Not having a trailer or tow vehicle means I would have to drive up and back. That's not a problem unless I break something.

Agro,

The maps and instructions for the event are not easy to understand, especially the one we got in the expert class. Part of the game is FINDING the checkpoints. If you email your address to me, I will ask the rallymaster to send you a package for novice class. These are easier to follow and you can figure out most of the route. Some of the instructions or "clues" are handed out at along the way. I do get a lot of enjoyment out of reviewing the maps and instructions after the event and "reliving" the rally. I actually took a lot of pictures during the event to share with you all. DO NOT EVER BUY A SIPIX CAMERA. They are very compact but they really suck. The battery died and I lost all the pictures.

Do powermaster alternators come in chrome? I found a local shop that will rebuild my chrome Accell unit to make 94 Amps. They get $65 for this and I think that's reasonable.

Paul
