I guess I'm older than I realized. I remember just about everything mentioned here.

How about 2 pretzels for a penny, a coke for a nickel, Double Cola in the spiral bottle, SS Kresge, when Cruzin' Wooward happened every weekend.

I must admit though that 59A, 59AB, etc stumped me.

whew! I didn't think I was THAT old until I read these replies and realized that "I remember that" but had forgotten it was so long ago! One of my fondest... fresh milk, deliverd in glass bottles to the porch...

I remember when the self serve car wash was .25 for wash and .10 for vacuum. The lines were so long that the local cops were there to direct traffic. ( I owned that wash in the '60's !)

How about those linen cones that were dipped in wax to form a funnel, placed in your ear and lit. Supposedly it caused the ear wax to melt and would clear your head.....especially if it was burning too close to your hair! Or honey, lemon and vinegar for a sore throat? Do you remember the name of that horrible licorice tasting medicine that your mom gave you when you had an upset stomach?....."Paragoric"

How about back in the 60's when everyone wore a Maltese Cross because it was cool. Or Madras bleeding shirts with "fairy" loops on the back? Never figured out what function they had other than having your buddies yank them off. What about "high boy collars" on shirts and suede shoes!

I think I just aged another 15 years after recalling all of this!

southernfried, what a small world! We must have been there about the same time (I was only there for 18 months). I remember walking out to the base lakes to look for snakes and walking back to the main portion of the base to buy crappy tasting hamburgers wrapped in foil and stored in a steamer.

Maxwell might have been a good place to be a kid, but Elmendorf (Anchorage, Alaska) was 10000% better!!! I can honestly say that it was never hot and humid at Elmendorf.

Yea, the ol desert bags hanging on the front bumper and a 25 pound block of Union Ice on the floorboard !! Nevada Desert air conditioning !!

My younger brother would swipe ice chips from the Ice man's delivery truck when he delivered Ice to our Ice Box !!

Bed sheets and clothes that were dried outside on the clothes line Smeled SOOOO Good !!

White Bucks, Black & White Saddle shoes, Black Converse tennies,
Dixie Peach and Palamade (more wax than grease)
Red Rider BB guns, Bobby Blake was a good guy then !!

S&H green stamps, Blue Chip stamps (stamp wars, 10 X the stamps)

My grand dad took me trout fishing one fall in the Monterey mountains, (Calif.) caught lots of fish for 3 days. On the way home we were going down this long steep grade all dirt roads.
The old fords breaks faded and we were going faster and faster.
Grampa said to hang on, and steered the ford real close to the bank, closer yet untill the running board started to drag against the bank, and after a hundred yards or so we slowed down nicely.
Controled Friction played hell on the running board tho !!
Well, we also got 2 flat tires with only 1 spare, no problem, we changed the one and gramps said to stay with the car that he would be back in a little while, off he went with 1 flat tire !
Seemed like hours when he came huffing up the hill, put the temperary fixed tire on and slowly were on our way. About 5 miles down the road we came to a field, gramps pulled over, got out and removed the temp. repaired wheel, took it out in the field and started stuffing more straw and grass into tire till it was rock hard.
Well, that straw tire made it all the way to Salinas, about 30 miles. It was 3/4 flat by the time we got to a service station, but just enough not to cut the tire or ruin the rim.
But, he caught Hell when Grandma saw the trashed running board !


Putting bacon in a Bull Durham bag and tieing it on the end of a fishin pole then we would catch crawdads by the bunches !!

I remember it all, I guess I am old.

-Gasoline at Sinclair station in Edmond Oklahoma 19.9 cents a gal.
-Movie theatre across the street only cost $0.50, unless you went to the early show for .25
-Didn't carry checks, the merchants had counter checks available from every bank in town.
-45 RPM record players in the car.
-Replaced with the 8 track. (or was it the other way around).
-Safety minded folks were having seat belts installed in their cars. None came from the factory.
-You could but spray paint without an ID.
-Service stations actually performed repairs, and everyone spoke English.
-You dressed up to get on a plane.
-Everyone called one another "Sir, or Mam", even if they didn't mean it.
-Could buy guns at K-mart.
-You came to America , to become an American.
-Sexually transmitted diseases didn't kill you.
-Everyone was straight!
-Elvis was alive, and so was Hoffa.
-You paid extra to get a phone where you pushed the buttons.
-The phones in your home belonged to the phone company, you just rented them.
-You could smoke in public.
-You could demand a calibration of the radar gun.
-Some of the TV shows were in color.
-You didn't have to press #1 to hear it in English.
-Junk mail was something you actually looked forward to.
-Everyday you thanked the guy who invented carbon paper.
-Typewriters made typewriter noises.
-People in England were called English.
-Girls didn't have an 800 number.
-Hoped to never use a CELL phone.

Beatnicks, cuffs on jeans, inkwells at the top of your school lift up desktop, lunch tokens. Instead of stick on tags we used to have a little flap of metal that was a certain color that bolted to the rear license plate that showed the fees had been paid..
Cup of coffee in paper cup with a paper lid and a little flap on it for 10 cents. Coffee at Sambo's for 5 cents. Potato chips in a box. Invention of Saran wrap instead of foil or waxed paper for our lunches. Paper air filters for our cars.
Back seats in cars.......You know what I mean.

Ok, I confess,

I am so old that reading all of the above posts was like reading tomorrows tech advances to me. Hand pumped gas for 14 cents a gallon at my Uncle's station. Cars with woodend wheels and solid tires. Old freight wagons with gun carrying drivers and no paved roads anywhere. Hell, I never studied history in college, I had lived it. First tractor I saw was monstrous in size, ran off steam and rode like a solid axel all steel machine could be expected to ride. If you hit a rock you could easily be throuwn off.

I started counting my age over when I turned 45 the first time and now and in my 60s again.

Boy.... a lot of old memories here.... but do you remember when you were getting gas at the "filling" station you usually asked for it by the gallon and not by the dollar?

"Yes sir, gimmie 5 gallons please!"

And then watched as the attendent filled up the glass jug on the top of the "pump" to the 5 gallon mark and gravity fed it to your car.

How about this one

I can remember when you could go to a Major league baseball game for $ 3.00. Thats right. When the Texas Rangers opened Ranger stadium ( Now replaced with The Ballpark) it only cost three bucks to see the game, Infield seats. Outfield seats were one dollar less. Now it cost about $55.00 - $60.00 for the same seat in regular season.

Coke for a nickel

Gas for .15 a gal

gallon of milk for .35

AND DRINKING WATER WAS FREE! NOT $ 1.25 A PINT!
