Aluminum bodies - Aluminum 427FE
If I buy a Kirkham Cobra, what am I looking at for a nice Guardsman Blue paint job with white stripes? I know that Kirkham doesn't do paint. Anybody with an aluminum bodied car care to offer their wealth of experience to a novice? I have no idea of the preparation of the paint surface of the aluminum bodied cars (well, fiberglass too, for that matter). Is there a place where I can look up the paint preparation requirements of an aluminum body?
Also, any owners of the Shelby aluminum 427FE out there? Good experience? How much was your build?

DKing: I'm not a painter. But a decent paint job will run you every bit of $10K.
As to the cost of a aluminum 427. You are probably looking at finish number of around $25K to do it right. Maybe a little more.

this is just a test to see if if I am able to reply with my new account and if I get any notification of new responses per mail.

I'm going to be negotiating with the UFW over there for the foreseeable future (Coastal Berry)--nothing like picking a tough one. Anyway, seems like I'll simply need to enjoy myself on the road--and bring the Cobra.

Dking
Real1 (Evan) has it right--$25K will do quite nicely for the Shelby aluminum block based motor. I ended up with a pretty nasty motor for that number.
Also--U2 Driver just had his Kirkham done up in your color combo.

Shannon,
That's very generous of you to let me check out your car. I'll give you a call after June 5---I'm finishing my MBA at night at Santa Clara and this last class is borderline abusive. I'll have more time to begin pursuit of a Cobra build after I finish taking my beating in this last class. Did you have your CSX built for you, or did you build it from a rolling chassis? XK's Unlimited in SLO seems to do some nice work.
Cheers,
Doug "wanna be a Cobra driver" King

Not for the faint of heart, I take it. But hey, who reads the instruction manuals anyway, right?
How may hours (days, weeks, months...) did you put into your component build? Any "fabrication" necessary, or did it pretty much bolt together? How was Shelby American to deal with? I've heard one story of a buyer that had signed a contract, but when it came to delivery they tried to upcharge him. This is one of those "I know a guy who knows a guy that...", so I don't know how true it is. You can send me an email at douglas.king@xilinx.com or yippee_kai_yea@yahoo.com if you want to take this discussion off line.
Five more weeks of brutality in my MBA program and I'm done. I think I'll skip the Ph.D program...
Cheers,
Doug
