Just Destroyed FFR #1069

So far I have been unable to find an insurer that will do agreed value. They will only do stated value, and readily admit THAT is a "starting" point from which the subtract normal wear and tear, mileage etc.

excalibur...keep searching, there are many co's that do Agreed Value, at least in the mainland 48 states. bill

Well, didn't want to post a new topic b/c it's not FFR related but wanted to share this.

Not 2 hrs ago my wife was driving our new 2003 Honda Pilot with the kids in back watching the DVD. Driving down HWY 54 when a lady decided she wanted to turn left while in the right lane. My wife T-boned this lady spinning them into the ditch. Wife and kids, and others involved not injured whatsoever. Honda Pilot on the other hand has massive frontal damage. I haven't even changed the oil yet. I know the FFR wreck was all me, but what kind of freak'n luck do you have to have for this to happen? No need for response, just think of how lucky you are to not have 2/3 vehicles you own all bashed up.

Oh yeah, I know I'm very lucky to not have any of my family bashed up! I am not placing that second!

To all;

I am in the insurance industry in claims,have been for 10 years now. To clear up a few misconceptions let me state the following;;;

99.9% of policy's written are for A.C.V.,actual cash value.
You can get "agreed on value" policys for Cobras.
When an insurance company "totals" your car,they pay you the value of the car and then the car belongs to them to do as they please with it,as they have just bought it from you...
They are then sold for "salvage" mostly thru salvage dealer,some are "bid" out to rebuilders or dismantlers for their parts.
You do have the option to "retain salvage" on your vehicle,you must pay the insurance company the "reasonable amount" they could expect to get at a salvage sale. Granted a 2003 Z-71 is going to bring a lot more salvage than a 1995 Ford Escort.On a car such as a Cobra or any "specialty" car that will not have a good salvage value,20% of the A.C.V. would be the norm,meaning you could buy back your car for 20% of the insurance settlement..Right now late model 4X4s will bring as much as 40% return at a salvage sale,we recently sold a one year old Z-71 hit hard dead center in the front for exactly half what we paid the owner for it and the owner was very satisfied with his settlement...Most mid size autos will bring from 20 to 30 percent return,depending on the amount of damage....

Hope this clears up some misconceptions about the way claims are handled and if anyone has any questions about claims or how they are handled,please feel free to ask...

Sure hope State Farm remains loyal to you as your insurance carrier--I had a very bad experience with them in the late '70's--left a foul taste in my mouth regarding them ever since--I had been w/them since '65, had my home, my business and company vechicles, home and personal insurance w/ them-- had one auto claim w/them for a broken windshield from a softball of all things--then one snowy, icy road morning I slid into the backend of a Cargo delivery truck--about $800 damage to the frontend of my car(the truck got it's "dock" brace bent in, never even claimed against them)--they fixed my car then cancelled my personal auto insurance 2 months later--but they wanted to keep the rest of my business--Yeah right
Had not had a moving violation in 10-12 years for anything before that--didn't get a ticket then either

I have been away for awhile, in the late unpleasantness in Iraq so I may be new to this fray. Here are my pennies:
1: Thank goodness you weren't hurt.
2: Sounds like State Farm is standing up, as they should
3: The missing rear bar is the probable culprit...a larger front bar
will 'loosen' the car, and a larger rear will 'tighten' it generally. Your car was probably set up WAY loose because it was dialed in for a rear bar that was absent. Another factor may have been the road surface at the point of loss, with construction going on there is no telling how fouled the road was...even if it looked clean. The
big rigs leave a lot of trash behind, not the least of which can be a lot of dust if they are hauling rocks, sediment, etc away from a work site.
4: I hope all works out well, because this hobby (and this site) could use a few more good guys like you!

I believe certain things are warning signs.

While giving a neighbor a ride in my unfinished car last week, I was so busy showing the kid what to watch for on the gauges...that I blew right thru a stop sign ! His eyes were almost as big as mine.

I felt like cr@p for many days afterward.

Here I think I'm a professional driver with loads of experience, trying to show a kid what good healthy hobby is...

Anyways...IT is always looking for YOU...

Well, the wait is over and State Farm came through in rapid fashion. The independant appraiser they paid to send out gave them a figure and that is the figure that will be on the check they issue. It is a couple thousand less than I thought the car was worth, but a couple thousand more than I told myself I would fight for. So I'm happy. FFR 1069 will be picked up tomorrow and sold at an auction. I did not want to buy it and use it for parts on another one. I want to buy another one complete. I wanted to thank David, Manny and especially Neal for all the generous help and time they spent educating me on the insurance business. It sure helped. And thanks to the rest of you with polite replies and advice to my previous posts. Bottom line is issue is closed and the wreck was 2 weeks ago, State Farm came through with what was fair and they did it very quickly.
