Personalized Plate or Historic Plate?

I'm is Arizona and about to buy a Cobra with the option of a regular plate, personalized plate or historic plate.

Any ideas for a personalized plate (7 letters/numbers)?

Is a historic plate a good option to consider?

I do realize that this is trivia, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Vegen,

Have you checked with your local DMV about the historic plate? It can be quite difficult in some states because of the 'foggy' origin of many cobras.

Historic plates can certainly add to the car, but a personalized plate is still a good an much easier option. In NY, the DMV maintains a web site where you can instantly check the availability of custom plate combinations. Although many of the good ones are already taken, 'PWRSLIDE' was a nice fit for my Superformance. Good Luck!

Thanks for the post. AZ requires that a car be 25 or more years old and the one I'm after on Saturday is registered in California as a 1966 Ford, so I'm probably going to go after the historic plates, as the personalized names I've entered in the AZ search engine are all taken by AZ cars.

All the plates you are looking for are gone???? That's what happens when you take so long to get your cobra..

The historic plates are on 5 or 6 of the cars in the club.

I'm planning on a club run to the Sedona airport for a luncheon on the 17th of May. Join us.

I have a AZ Historical Plate on my Cobra, I considered changing until I talked to my Insurance Agent. He said it make a difference in my premium, I'm with Farmer's right now. Check with your agent it may save you some money.

Say What? I'm off to California (my home state) on Saturday with a CC in hand just in case I decide to buy the Cobra. I'll haul it back here as the first thing I put in my newly built house in the Hualapai Mountains above Kingman, AZ - garage of course.

I'm moving on the 17th, but perhaps next time.

I'm thinking historic plates, based on the post above - insurance savings!!!

Now that is good news as I'm always ready to save money. I was just down at ADDT to see what they need, e.g. car purchase from private party in California. It's simple, e.g. pink slip, registration, no bill of sale. The Cobra I'm looking at is currently registered as a 1966 Ford, so it's automatically historic. Also, Arizona does not care how much you pay, they go by how much the car originally cost and discount that amount each year to establish registration cost. So, it appears the cost will be around $23 per year - it's a really old car!!! So, buying a used Cobra from someone that was able to register it as a 60's car is a real plus in Arizona.

The really good news is that you are buying the car in Calif. and going to Arizona with it. Try it the other way around and you hit a wall of brick with our DMV. They turn simple things into impossible things. I have a historic plate on a car of which there were only 97 made in that configuration and it is 33 years old. I had to finally get a Senator to go to the DMV and tell them there are such things as historic plates in Calif. Then they wanted to inspect the car to see if the numbers matched the registration. After looking at the car, their inspector told me he didn't have a clu as to what he was looking for so he gave me the ok. Two years ago I called to ask if they had recieved my check for that years registration as I hadn't received the tag and when I gave the woman in Sacramanto my plate number, she said there is no such number as that on a license plate. After explaining to her that the HV stood for historical vehicle and she could look back 8 years and see that I had it that long, she said well we have your check and have sent the tags but I still don't belileve there is such a thing as a plate number like that.

I love to hear these stories, as I recently moved from Encino (LA area) to Arizona - no traffic - real friendly government types (so far) and everything is really so easy to accomplish. The DMV is brutal in California - visiting the DMV is almost as bad a having to go to the unemployment office, dentist or, probably, the welfare office - you are treated the same way at each office - badly.

Anyway, if it was not for the jobs, how many people would be living in California, anyway? Of course, there are some really nice beach areas, etc.

The beaches and other things in Calif. aren't worth living here for and the jobs are going away by the thousands. If I weren't so old and all of my family is buried here I would have been out of here years ago. I am still looking at property in Roswell, New Mexico and a few places in Arizona and Montana. Doubt if I can ever swing anything and the age thing is the pits. Don't ever grow old. I have actually ran into a couple of people in the Calif. DMV who know their jobs and are willing to help any way they can. Unfortunately they are few and far between. I am really happy for you that you had the sense while you are young enough to leave. Now if we can convince Davis and Flores to move to Arizona you can have them free.

I just sent in for my tags on the New York dmv web site finally.After a whole lot of searches to see what was available me and the wife decided on HAPEHOUR.

No Thanks on Davis and Flores - they would not be welcomed here, perhaps they would by a few.

I have family in the Sonora area in California. I will retire here in about 10 years. I feel that less stress (versus the working environment in California) will add quality time to my life. A lot of people are moving here from out of state as housing is very reasonable and no one is going to drop a bomb on us.
