Question Who drove these Cobras?

They used to race at the airport here in Cumberland. I have seen pictures of #88 and #55, anyone know who owned them and where they are now?
Check out www.nationalroadrally.com for more pictures of cobras racing here.

Depending on what year your picture was taken, Bob Johnson (#33 Cobra)could have been there. If your pic is 1960, he was in a Corvette, which was all white. Believe he first ran a Cobra in 1961, but when I saw it, it was dark blue.
My 3rd road race I went to was Cumberland, so your post really digs deep in memory. Got there late evening, dressed for summer, not a darn cold mountain top. Slept in my TR3 with a car cover over it. Believe I went to see Don Sessler, of Porsche fame, driving a Sunbeam Alpine FP, that was from where I worked, in Columbus, Ohio. Have to ask the wife later today. She knows all.

Gary,
Where the heck have you been? How the heck did your fireman fund raiser event go? Hope you make it to Da' Fling this year!

Art, uhh, may I ask where you have been? Obviously your Cobra knowledge is a little more indepth than most of us. You're right here in Columbus? Tell us more.

DV... London, Ohio, the Sturgis of Cobras!

Art Hughes Hi Art The only 55 car I know of was the FIA driven by Sears/Gardner. My guess would be that these cars where raced by privateers. Call Rick Kopec from Shelby Club and ask him. I have only found 2 pictures of Dick Smith racing in all his glory. Try some of the restorer guys that rebuild these cars. I am shore someone out there has your answers. Rick Lake

What a treasure chest of historical pics! Those must have been incredible times. I found this particularly interesting:
"The Walt Hangsen Memorial race for A and B production cars was established in his memory. The event was won by Ed Lowther, his first victory at Cumberland in 11 years. Driving a 427 Cobra, Ed also set a new lap record of 1:13 for production cars."
According to the photos there were many 289's still running that year ('68). Is there any more history on the performance of the 427's vs. the 289's in the same races? ( I was under the impression that a direct comparison was difficult because they never got to run against each other in the same races.)

It is Bob Johnson in the '63 pic. That would be a Team Car, as Johnson did not own his own Cobra until late '63 for the '64 season. He was SCCA Nat'l Champ in '63 and '64 in A/Production.

Hi Ed.
Been kinda busy with that raffle for the Fire Dept. All went well and made some people really happy winning the car and the trucks and harley davidsons. As you can see in every picture at the Cumberland airport the Cobras are smokin the field out in front, just as it should be. They are making the reunion or what ever they call it annual. So next year I will not go to the NASCAR race in Dover and I will register for the event. Maybey they will see a cobra out front like old times! Anybody wanna come out here next year? We can show them the meaning of the word DOMINATION.

emailed a friend who was with me at a NY state road race, where I believe Bob Johnson was in his last season in a Corvette. He's about 22 times smarter than me, and betting he will remember what year, and even the month we where there. This would establish a time frame in my mind, of the Bob Johnson Corba drag race pic that I have, as the connection that I had with him was only thru a shop foreman at the dealership where I worked. The dealership changed hands the following year, and I don't remember being at Johnson's shop more than once, which was the first year the dealer was open. So, the following year, would had no connections with Bob. Will post again Tues/weds.

I did not READ your post about the 1963 picture. I assume your comment was about posted Cumberland pic showing a Cobra leading a group of cars. You said Johnson was the lead car?Whatever, I said I would email a friend that was with me at a race in lower Western NY state, where Bob Johnson was in a Corvette, about 1960/61, has been answered. He thinks he has pics from that race. Maybe they are dated. He's looking for them.

I thought all Cobras were accounted for, and you could trace thier history. Did they keep the same number thier whole racing life or did it change?
I see on the Essex cobra they say the original is unaccounted for. Maybe it spun off the course at the airport and is laying in the woods just waiting to be found?

Art:

When I went to the link, I searched through the '63 Cumberland Photos. The sixth picture is Johnson and his famous #33 number.
A trivia question. Do you know why Johnson used the #33 number for his cars?

#33 was the Ohio State quarterback's number in a football game on which Mr. Johnson made a rather successful and substantial wager.

Dick:

You are one bright individual. The success of that bet enabled Johnson to purchase his own Cobra.
