Hey guys, what is the definition of a "Slabside"? Is it without sidepipes? Or a certain year. I have tried to look around on the internet on several occasions but I keep coming up empty. Lots of nice pictures but no history.

Dane.. the 289 street cars had no wheelwell flares at all; to the contrary, the fender wells were chiseled in the vertical, such that the side profile was flat, like cut from a "slab."

Thats great Ron. Perfect picture to explain it too. I also notice the gas cap behind the driver, were there several locations of the gas cap through the 60s? Or am I just in a replica haze?

I believe all (or most?) of the 289-bodied cars had the gas cap behind the driver's head, as shown above. All (or most?) of the 427-bodied cars have it mounted on the passenger's rear fender.

Raceral;

You are right about Jim being a reallll nice guy,in fact most of the day saturday the 427 was nowhere to be found,people were riding around in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....

Somehow,if I ever had an original Cobra,I do not think I'd be letting others ride around in it....I'd take them for rides but not give them the keys......

Jim's a swell guy, that's for sure.....

Default More SAAC 28 pictures

I have added some of my Cobra pictures from SAAC 28 to my Gallery - check 'em out. There were a lot of nice Cobras - a bunch of 289's, and a few 427's, even some Comp cars in both flavors. There were two 289 Cobras in the Concours, and two in the "Survivor" (unrestored) class. My Classic Car and HorsePower TV were both there checking out the action on Saturday.

Talked with Jim Maxwell and Tom Cotter (Tom wrote the great new book out about Holman-Moody, and has 1.5 Cobras - sharing a half of CSX 2149 with Jim). Met Ron "computerworks" in the garage - man, did he luck out on timing for his shots of CSX 3002 or what?

I brought my '65 HiPo Mustang convertible to SAAC 28 (the white one parked outside the garage area - I normally work Tech at the SAAC events). Too bad about the rain on Sunday - took a lot of "thunder" out of the show. The early Mustang class looked like a "HiPo" convention, my ragtop and two fastbacks (two REAL ones, and one conversion).

There was even a replica Daytona Coupe, and a 289 Cobra go-cart at SAAC 28. Quite a few nice cars to enjoy in Music City.

See Y'all next year in MY backyard at Michigan Speedway.

regards,
Jeff

Jeff and I were both taking pictures of Mike Henneberry's beauty 289 Comp car, CSX2487 (above)..being careful not to fire our flash's simultaneously.

For those that follow the show circuit... one of the Cobras in the Survivor class was... Hank William's car. He had a long ride for this one, from CA.

Guys;

I was just thinking about something..... CS made approximately 1100 Cobras, I have no proof but I'd guess there are less than 1000 that have survived,let's just call it 1000.... So now we have 1000 original Cobras left in the WORLD.... So anyone who owns one is in a pretty small and elite group I'd say....

Now here comes Jim Maxwell,good all around guy,he has two and a half original Cobras, that group just got realllll small,in fact he is probably in a group of ONE!!!!!!!!!!! So this guy Jim is in a very exclusive group and you know what he does with his cars, he drives them all over the place and when he can't,he lets others drive them all over the place.... We gotta do something with Jim,he is outta control....we need to take away his cars, I already have dibs on the blue slabside and Raceral has been given the big block car so that just leaves one half of a slabside that is about half restored,the rest of you guys can fight over it!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim, just having a little fun you and letting the other guys know just how generous you are with your cars. You are one unbelievable guy to do what you do with your cars and I salute for doing it and enjoying your cars and letting others enjoy them also, not many if any people would do what you do with them if they had them.....

Hope to see you and your cars again someday somewhere......

David

I think it is time to give out an annual award on ClubCobra to guys that share and drive and use and enjoy these WONDERFUL machines, especially real Shelby's. Instead of Grammys or Oscars, we should give the first "Maxwell" award to Jim and have it be an annual event. You're my hero Jim.

I complained about not seeing more of the "original" owners out there on another site, and certainly folks like Jim prove there is hope.

You guys are entirely too kind. I showed this thread to my wife and she said, " Who is this Jim Maxwell they are talking about?"!!!!
I had an absolute ball at SAAC-28. We put over 1000 miles each on CSX 2401 and CSX 2490. Unfortunately, 2149 doesn't run yet, or we would have driven it there too! I confess that I towed 3288 in a trailer and I feel guilty about it. But the weak excuses are that I almost always break something and its nice to have a way to get the remains home. Also, the 40 year old top for the 289 has a huge rip in it I just recently discovered. I was going to drive 3288 home and follow with the empty trailer, but it rained for 8 straight hours on the trip home, so I chickened out.
Rob Cotter drove 2401 over and back with help from my brother-in-law, Paul Albert, two major motorheads.
Rob made the comment at the end of the tripo that he suspects that he has now driven an original Cobra for more miles and more hours than almost all current owners of original cars, and I think he's right! I'm sure he has the record for driving them in the rain---all the way there and back with NO wipers! But a big bottle of Rain-X.
David, Thanks so much for the round of drinks. I apologize for not thanking you earlier, but after 4 beers, I barely made it to the Shelby evening program!
I got to meet Ron Richards (Computerworks) too. What a great guy! He obviously had fun, always with a huge smile on his face as he looked over the many Cobras at the meet.
The group of Unique Cobras was incredible, and they drove the heck out of them out on the track. Good for them!!!!
I'll post some pictures as soon as I get them back from processing.
I have to admit that I like to watch others enjoy my cars. I would be standing around talking at a remote site at the track and one of my cars would go cruising by, usually with my brother at the wheel. His son's boss doesn't believe his uncle has a couple of real Cobras, so he now has photos of himself at the wheel driving to show him. He is so excited!!
