Heat Shield for Starter: Update
Last year at VIR I failed to start after a short time in the pits. Diagnosis was "heat soak" of the starter, apparently a common problem as the exhaust and headers dissipate heat near the starter but before everything cools off.
On my return, I had a heat shield fabricated by Eric Hindenberger, of Performance Engineering ( http://www.perfeng.cc/. I'll try to attach a pic.
As a sideline, he fabricates Indy-car "diapers" of mylar coated kevlar with high temp velcro fasteners that go under the engines, keep the heat from the headers off, and keep the parts from flying if there's an explosion. It's well made and has stayed on the starter through thick, thin, and monsoon.
To date, no hot start problems on the street, even through the summer last, and last week at VIR no problem, even with a hot engine and rapid restart. So, for you that need this kind of thing, highly recommended.
