Heck, it took me 10 years to build my Cobra ... and I built two! No, really.

Every time I "finished" something I stood back, took a look, and decided to rip it out and do it all over again. It got to the point that I just accepted the fact that the first time was to learn, the second time was to do it right.

My first Cobra was a piece of junk, my second Cobra is something that I'm pretty darn happy with ... and they are the SAME car!

Take a break, spend some time on my Cobra web site and read a few pages of my misfortunes / education!

Roger,

I don't think you have sons that drive.

You do not have the, "Dad, I have a very important date tonight, may I borrow... the cobra?" Then, at about one in the morning, ring, ring, the phone wakes you from the chair you are sitting in as you wait for six years of work to roll back into the special barn you built, just for the car, and it is your son.

"Dad, I'm out by the lake. The car will not start." You, being the dad, get dressed. As you assemble all of your faculties to drive to the lake, you think of all the things you will need to get the car started.

After you have basically loaded to roller benches into the back of the farm truck, you venture 30 minutes out to some off-beatin lake where kids, like your son, smooch and do all the things you did when you were his age.

There... don't you feel better? Your car is just like everyone elses. I just figured you could use a bit of cheering for your frustration.

Laugh and have fun. Admit it, working on the cobra is... maybe a little fun.

LOL

You've had it running and driven it after only 5 years. Get the hell back to work with an adrenaline inspired smile!

It is well worth it. I have spent 1.5 years building mine and have invested about 900 hours to date. It is on its way to the interior shop today for carpeting, door panels and tonneau cover then comes about another 50-100 hours of work to complete it for summer enjoyment. There have been several times where I have almost given up and shelved the project but opted to hang in there and now it is almost complete. Well at least as complete as possible until I start the improvement stage.

I have about 200 miles on mine before I disassembled it this last time for body and paint and have spent about 150 hours re-assembling it to its current state as shown in my gallery. It has been assembled and disassembled completly 2 times and is now on its third and final (planned) assembly.

I also had done modifications of items that A&C did that I was not happy with only to scrap my mods and start over, so expect to do things only to redo them later. My suggestion would seem to be the popular one here, DON"T USE SCRAPYARD PARTS! You'll only regret it later. The only thing on mine that was "scrapyard is the steering column but I completely disassemble it and replaced all wearing items. Maybe I am one of the lucky ones, but I have not had any problems with mine that was because of shortcuts or used parts, there are none and this is the only way to build a reliable Cobra that you can enjoy.

Keep your chin up and don't give in, it's worth it in the end.

John

Hey it is worth it. I just rolled mine out of the garage last Sunday. I have had mine 9 weeks now. I am half tempted not to paint it.. The looks everyone gives it just going around the block and people passing by is just fantistic. Keep up with it, and by all means don't use anything used without having it rebuild or reworked to at least new condition. It takes longer but you will learn the the wait was worth it. OH YEAH one last thing, unless you are going to actually race the car, try to stay more toward the street end of performance, you have to build a car to what you are going to use it for. Race cars don't make good street cars. I am sure there will be people that will disagree with me but there is no point in going all HI-Tech if you are building a street car. A 375 HP car that weighs 2500 lbs is plenty fast. Not to mention you break less that way VS the 550 HP car that goes insanly fast.. Like me that 375 HP I have no problem jumping in it to go get a gallon of milk. Just the satisfaction of knowing you built it yourself everytime you turn the key will keep you smiling.

Milk runs? Shortly after I first got my Cobra I thought about buying another refrigerator. 6 maybe 7 gallons of milk in there, but I think I need one more.......LOL

The average Cobra owner won't wait longer than 4.5 seconds to get to 60 mph. I think this sums up the fack that we are not patient people.

Gee, I hope we didn't scare him with the kids and milk run stories.

Ernie, what do you think?

rbray,

Five years seems like a long time but I know if I tried to tackle a build on a Cobra it would be closer to twenty years on the build.
One great thing is that you'll have an Everett-Morrison when you're done... Everyone that I've seen was a show stopper...
Someone suggested asking for help and that's a suggestion I would consider... Cobra owners are the most helpful people in the world. Just the fact that they were able to help would be payment enough for most of these people...(and beer) They love these cars...

It happens. I currently have a chevy that is fully restored in my garage, except I am storing it in "exploded diagram format" cause I haven't put it back together since I got the body back from the painter a year ago. I tell people I am still letting the paint cure.

I like that. "exploded diagram format"

That's good.

Brad,
Building the car will not save you money. It is cheaper to shop around and buy one from some poor s.o.b. that got nickeld
and dimed to death chasing his dream. That is the ugly truth.

Hey Fixit,
I have a 67 GTX in my garage. I'm gonna wait another 10 years or so to let the metal "normalize" Before I start the resto.

Steve R

I think thats an accurate statement (and it is ugly).

If I were to build a car myself it would be with the understanding that the satisfaction would be IN the building and enjoying the final product. That alone should be your reason for building, NOT to save money. And if you build and DO save money, thats cool, just be realistic about the goal.

Ernie
