engines/ trannies were not installed by SPF but rather their owners or an outside shop. SPFs come as rollers w/o engine / trans.
Any engine combo can be installed. A few installed 4 spd toploaders instead of the more typical 5 spd Tremec's. owners choice at time of original install. no big deal. 5 spds are the most frequently found trannies on spfs.
if you get a deal on a 4 spd older/newer car and want to convert to a 5 spd, no big deal either. I converted a 65 K code mustang from a 4 spd toploader to a 5 spd tremec... not hard to do. same with a SPF. conersion parts are readily available...
do what ya wanna do.
my 65 stang performance is much improved with the 5 spd, better 0-60 and better highway driving and overall mpg (if that counts ). important to me is the fact that my 3.89 rear end is running at low 2000 rpm at 70-75 mph with 5 spd vs high threes with 4 spd. better for mileage on trips and better on engine for longevity.
if you dont plan on many extended highway high speed trips, then 4 spd will do just fine. or change the rear gear ratios.
fyi, there are also a few automatic trans out there too..for some folks who have the physical need for an auto or dont want to shift .
dont be concernd about older spf's. many have had alot of the evolutionary upgrades already installed that are found on newer cars. if not, they can be added too.
my old 156 is a very early car. ..some of the upgrades of newer cars have been made, some have not. just a matter of preference to the owners, balance of need/want and dollars to do. an older car can be a good value with or without the upgrades. bill.
bill.
