Where was that bit of information? I wouldn't think that would follow the punishment to fit the crime. I bet at least 95% of all the people fudge the numbers to avoid taxes, including all government employees.

When I bought my SPF, I cringed when I thought about the sales tax and what it was going to cost me to register the car in Va. In the end I have always come back to one fundemental concept. It is always cheaper to do the task correctly the first time. I wrote the check based on the sales price of the vehicle and sleep a lot better at night knowing that I didn't have to worry about the very thing that is happening in the above scenario. I hope it works out for the people affected by this case because some my not really be at fault, especially if they purchase a vehicle based on questionable data supplied to DMV from a previous owner. But to those who may have chosen a different path, it usually comes back to the fundemental concept described above.

Let me get this straight... these cars are $30,000 and up. Wayyyyyyyy up. They generally aren't daily drivers. They are loved and lavished upon by their owners regardless of the expense. Many are trailered to their destinations in VERY expensive trailers and tow vehicles. And what about the thousands in shop tools and air conditioned garages?
I cannot tell you how many times I have been asked to provide a sales receipt for well under the actual selling price of our car. While the GREAT majority of owners and prospective owners are straght-up, responsible, law abiding individuals, there is always that one individual who fouls it up for the rest of us.
I suppose the point is, if you can afford one of these marvelous toys, why put your entire parade and "OUR" parade at risk to avoid a couple of thousand dollars of legitimate revenue to the state? If you can't afford the taxes....you can't afford the car.

Agro1, Mr.Fixit, and anyone else I may have missed,
I take issue with you characterizing Terry Brown as a "dirty ex-cop".
I am so enraged as I type this that my hands are shaking.
Yes, we are held to a higher standard. As we should be.
However, to state that he may have been dirty on the job without any proof, knowledge, or information in that regard is inflamatory, irresponsible, and if put in writing in the form of a complaint in CA, a crime.
I assume you also are familiar with the terms libel and slander.
Continue to post and debate, but leave the personal attacks out of it.

ditto
Agro,
You have no idea who, or what your talking about.
Jim is right.
Another thing, it was a matter of time for the state of California to perform the following;
a) look for more money
b) limit peoples rights (in this case to own a cool car)
I am not going to re-hash what really happened on this issue, since I don't know "everything" that went on either (but I know ALOT more than you do about it), but you are flat wrong to "characterize" Terry Brown (no he is not related to me).
If anything gets screwed up because of someone, it's this forum because of attacks like yours.

Right on, Bro,
I'll bet none of these mighter then thou posters have ever cheated on their income taxes either!!! Let's face it guys, we all cheat on different things... It wasn't like the guy was taking bribes or dealing dope with the bad guys... With our good governor raising registration fees by 300%, I can't say that I blame him...(Of course when he did it, there was no mention of the increase)... Got my 2 layer Nomex on, give me a chance to put on the Nomex undies, then flame away... Just my $.02...

I never met Terry, even though he lives within few miles of me. I would be reluctant to call him names because of his attempt to pay as little as possible in taxes.
God knows us Californians pay enough in taxes to choke a 8V Holley.
Gas is finally down to 2.09 a gallon. We PAY.
In the case of The obviously he paid a lot. Let's be kind to him.
Every speeding ticket I ever got resulted in a "conviction".Technically that makes me a Criminal. Do I feel like one? NO.
A child malester is a criminal too. Yes there are varying degrees to our indiscretions.

An interesting tangent: Remember the "Urban Legend" about the late model Porsche for sale for less than 10% of what it was worth? The woman selling the car got a phone call from her husband in some Caribbean resort; he told her he was leaving her for his young secretary, and for her to sell the Porsche and send him the money; the jilted wife was so mad she figured to get back at the SOB by selling said Porsche for, say, $3000, thus fulfilling her husband's wishes. Now, the new Porsche owner had a newer Porsche and paid 10% of what it was worth, and a bill of sale stating same. Legal? Should be. Ethical? Does it matter? If any of us were that same individual answering that ad in the paper, would you claim "selling" value or "Blue Book" value? I know this is not really relevant, BUT.................................

Titles Unlimited states that they don't title Replicas/Kits.Cheating on the tax ,asside. How can you call a car built in South Africa (or by some guy in his garage,or wherever)in 1968-2003, not built by FoMoCo, a 1965 FORD roadster? Given the deadly record these "kit" cars possess, it's supprizing that Ford doesn't go after people calling them Fords.

It's easy to cast stones when someone else is the recipient but in truth, everyone has put their foot into the pedal beyond posted speed limits, or had a beer before legal age or engaged in questionable moral behavior before marriage and unless you are an American Indian, your forefathers were descendants of criminals evicted from foreign countries. Terry as others, have accepted the consequences and responsibilities of their actions which is significantly more honorable than those that chastise them from behind their keyboards. The residents of California suffer from a common malady, they support the masses that invade their state for medical and social support....and they do this to a legal fault. The reason the justice system is pursuing any and all taxable collective means is the direct result of the folks that feel they need to support everyone and subscribe to the "political correctness" that has underscored common logic. Law enforcement officers perform the thankless task of risking their lives, for little compensation and serious public scrutiny. The gray zone within the accepted law is thinly disguised unless you're a politician at which time it becomes an agenda and job security.

If I can add to this.....
There are over 250 cases in California being looked over by DMV Investigations department. If you have a Cobra registered as a 1965, unless it is an original....this has sent a red flag to the California DMV.
Beware....as you will be required to re-register your car!

,,not being from Calif. I really don't understand HALF of what goes on over there. I read things in the paper or hear them on TV and it's enough to make you wonder:
Is Calif. some kind of "country" now? It's seems WAY to bizzare to be just another "state", as I understand the term. And for WHAT reason is this recall thing all about anyway? I haven't heard of any "crimes" the Governor has commited so I'm baffled as to what legitmate reason there would be for a recall.
But if that turkey is behind the Cobra investigation, recall him NOW! Thats reason enough,
Ernie

My two cents First I don't know Terry. I am sure that he was a good cop with a poor thinking about trying to save some money. If he had said the car was valved at 35,000.00 there would be no problem. He got caught. I don't believe that he was fired over this. The PBA Union would not let this happen for this peddy crime. There is a larger story than is being told. 2nd To all the people that live in Cali. I have seen pictures of it and it's beautiful. My uncle lives there. You are not forced to stay there and pay overpricing on homes, gas, food, cars, and other services. It must be nice too be rich. I'm not. So quit crying about it. Your state is bankrupted because of lousy leadership and the fact that the borders to this country are wide open. You let women in that are ready to deliver babys because we have better hospital and these babys are American citizens. There is something wrong with this. I know all parents want the best for there babys and kids but this is still not right. How many of you have lawn services? Mexicans are doing 70-80% of these jobs. Your too Lazy to cut your own lawns BUT will work out for 2 hours lifting wieghts in the gym. 98% of the Police are a credit to there professions, they risk there lives to protect and serve, sometimes a wish they would serve someone else with that ticket, but it's there job. Some cops forget it's a job. 9/11 has past 2 years and peoples remains are still being buried. Alot of brave Police and firemen lost there lives to save others. There all HEROES. Finially This problem is all about MONEY,and CALI and other states want there piece of it, pure and simple. You play, you pay. It's sad that they go after a tax payer for 1,000.00 dollars and larger companys that owe millions just slide on by. Rick Lake ps it's still the greatest country.

Well Mr. Lake that was a very interesting dissertation on California.
As an 8th generation, married to a 10th generation Californian (Spanish, Blue eyes, Blond Hair); that’s before the carpet baggers from Washington DC blockaded the ports of Los Angeles and San Francisco and made us an offer we could not refuse.
The problem with California is that in the last 150 years the 13 colonies have sent us all your carpet bagging, neo socialist rejects and they have run the place into the ground.
We would gladly send them back to you. It is interesting how all your commie pick’os gravitate to our mild climate.
My ancestors left Ireland and settled originally in Mexico, why, freedom of religion, it was not totally available on your left coast.
In California we ran Cattle, planted Vineyards and Orchards. Only 1800 families lived in Los Angeles, and since Southern California is coastal desert, the population was all centered on the Los Angeles River because it was the only source of water.
California has been killed by your rejects, not by us, get your facts straight. Oh yes, your Washington DC carpet baggers allow the porous border with Mexico. California has been killed by the worst the United States has to offer. Please take them back.
Our lands have been federalized; Washington DC owns more of our land than is in private ownership. The National Parks Service, Nature Conspiracy and other socialist groups all come from Washington DC. We are have been annexed as Washington DC West, most has come about since the end of WWII. One of your carpet baggers, FDR, directly responsible for the over centralization of federal power during the War, trampling States Rights.
In case your hadn’t noticed the only true Americans live in Middle American both coasts are infected with people who would like the United States to fail.
Regards

Some questions worth pondering
Here are a few questions to ponder over a cold beer:
1) Most of us think we are "over-taxed." But is this a justifiable reason for knowingly committing tax fraud ???
2) If your neighbor cheats on his taxes, is this a good reason for doing likewise ??? Is it worth the potential penalties ???
3) If you have the resources to afford a luxury item like a $50K+ Cobra, then isn't it just plain STUPID to deliberately evade the sales taxes ??? Especially if there is a paper trail that can be used against you ???
4) When it comes to the law, should we hold police officers to a "higher standard" than the general populace ???
5) If a police officer does something that violates the public's trust, should he punished (demoted, fired, etc) accordingly ???
6) And lastly, GREED. It permeates society. Greed destroyed companies like Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossings. Millionaires (and billionaires) are willing to risk jail time rather than pay their taxes. So, should we not be surprised by these California sales tax cases ???
Y'all take it easy now, Brett

There was some type of an emergency broadcasted on just about all my television channels this morning. You know the one that beeps real loud and then scrolls across the screen. The funny thing is that it was all in spanish.
Just an interesting note from California. There were three cities mentioned Sacramento, Stockton and one other I don't remember. So be aware.
