Shelby Cobra Challenge Car 351W
Has anyone seen what the engine looks like in these cars...particularly what valve covers are used?

this would be correct. the engine is dry sump and the sump tank is in the engine compartment, passenger side. therefore, no footwell. the passenger side floorboard also has the fire bottle.

I have to agree with David. If you think your Cobra is pretty quick, just try and keep up with these Shelby Challenge Cobra's. They are extremely quick!

Kris:
Great photos; very informative.
Would it be possible to retrofit the collapsible steering column into my car? If so, could I retain the wood rim and adapt a quick release to the wood rim wheel, or would I need to go with the steering wheel in the photo?
Thanx,
Scott

Scott,
Shelby has a quick release steering wheel that retains the wood rim wheel. The collapsible column is from Finishline Motorsports here in Las Vegas. They have put them into regular street cars. Contact them for more info: http://www.finishlinecobraslv.com

Ha! They're not that fast... Loud? YES! But not that fast...
Here's a photo of my friend Scott passing two of'em on the inside exit of turn 6 at Sear's last year:

So what makes them so loud? They look like they're running sidepipes...do they have baffles in them...or are they just straight through?

Randy,
With a good driver they are very fast. I don't know anything about the drivers in the photo you have.

looking at this photo, i wonder what the circumstances are. i know the owners and assume they are driving the cars. generally speaking they are way off line and knowing these two i would guess they are in a practice or open track session. neither one of these guys drive that far off line in a race.
the pipes are not baffled.
i would also suggest checking out the "open track challenge" web site for lap times for one of these cars (sears was not on the list of tracks however) as compared to other cars. i'm sure some one has lap times for non-challenge cobras.
