After three really sweet flings, I think there would be a cobra riot in his front yard if he didn't put one on next year

Default Long live the Fling!

I put this post in the other thread of the same title in lounge:

"The Fling CAN NOT die. We must all do what is required for it to live on. There is no other non-race event for Cobra owners that can compare.

It is my hope that DV never tires of the event and if he did that some how it could carry on.

HOW ABOUT A SLIGHT CHANGE IN THREAD DIRECTION???????

How about some fresh ideas for the Fling? Keep in mind the roots, the cookies, CF, fun, 'family' event , not a run-n-gun track type event, cobras, friends. I feel strongly that as long as this is the DVSF, it will NOT turn into some track related competitive event.

For those of you that have been, think hard about the last few years. What worked, what didn't, what should of and why didn't it? New ideas.

I know one thing, next year I am staying at the hotels (and I live here!). I do not want to miss one more minute of the action. It seemed to me that the hotels them selves where one of the major attractions. That they kept people away from the lake and Quaker Steak and Lube. So to me, people during the evening would prefer to hang out at the Hotels. So, lets keep the party there. The event at the lake is expensive, and if many folks want to stay at the hotels, why spend the money there? Bring the 'party' to where the party really seems to be!

I think the key here is that during the day, many want to get out to the events, but at night, most seem to want to hang out at the hotels. Even the second year at the drag strip only about 8 cars hung out in the evening to take a trip down the strip.

What was the problem with Quaker Steak and Lube this year? Last year it was one of the highlights. Is it because we where told that the cops would not let us excercise our cars? Or was it because it conflicted with the gathering at the hotels?

I for one would like to see a longer event. Even if the first day is nothing but an arrive and hang out type of day.

Thoughts?

Rick"

Rick,

I agree that the hotels offer a fun and relaxed meeting place. Have a few drinks and walk to your room.. Lots of laughs.. Lots of good hearted ribbing and putting faces to names. If there was some way to get everyone at the same three motels on Trabue it would be great... Maybe a big BBQ in the parking lots. Not sure they'd allow it but possibly...
I love the London gathering... Small town USA, funnel cakes and fried baloney sandwiches...
It doesn't take much to make me happy....

Thumbs up

There is two Motels on RT 42 right behind the speedway station
where we lined up. There is also a few small motels in an around
London. Personally I think we owe the town of London our alegions. That's why I always stay at the Knights Inn.
All first floor rooms, McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bell, and a sports bar all within 200 feet of the Motel. A Sunoco gas station across the street. Family Restaurant within a 1/4 mile from Motel. Location is quiet and has easy access to Interstate 70.
There is a Holiday Inn express next door too.
Also I don't think it's necassary to spread out all those events. I would prefer that the autocross and the drag at the airport stay there and not over at the college. The airport idea was a stroke of genius. Sure, it could use some improvement like more drink and food vendors but Hey, it was the first time. A couple more shade tents would be nice. All in all evrything else went pretty darn good for the first effort. It's something I really look forward to every year cause I know it will just keep gettin' better and better.

Default Stuff

If the hotels won't 'allow' us I think there are three other hotels that would like full occupancy for a long weekend! Personally I don't feel as though we owe the hotels a thing. So who knows Hersh, maybe!

London, yup. They bend over backwards for us.

Autocross at OSU. Couple of problems there. It will not be there next year. A different sight where no one will cut our course in half and no one will complain about the noise is being looked at by SCCA. Does not mean we will be there, but if so, no more issues.

The drag strip at the airport was fun, the other half.......... . Food, shelter etc could use a boost, but who knows.

Was the band worth the money? Cool, no doubt. Wish I got paid for having such a good time!

More thoughts?

Rick

I don't have a lot of time right now, leaving for vacation in 30 minutes...

But real quick. The wife suggested finding more things for the wives to do.

I say we keep a very good mix of things to do. Some kind of "racing" event, some nice cruises, and the show. I enjoyed the dinner on Friday, but wonder if it would have been more cost effective to do something else. I really thought last year was great, such a nice mix of things.

DV, like Bill, I am offering to, and would really like to, be including in the planning and promotion of DVSFIV. Please keep me involved.

I'd write more, but I gotta run...Vegas beckons.

Default da next fling...

The airport (for me) seemed like the most fun.
Hersh, I agree about food, drinks, and shade.
Hey live and learn.
I wouldn't mind checking out the other hotels in London.

The silent auction seemed to have worked well.
It gives everyone a good long chance to bid ( or out bid)
on your favorite souvenier.
The band was ok, but no big deal in my book.
Well that's my 2 centavos

DVSF3 was my first but I had a great time. I'm not so worried about wife activities since she went this year and enjoyed it, but she will probably stay home next year.

Having so many people in one place at the hotels was a great way to meet, greet and stumble home safely.

Airport was probably the best to me. Agree on need for more food/drink options there. Love the drag and cone course.

And I think I heard you say OH $H!T !!! BRAKES!!!! from the other end of the tarmac.

By the way, How's the repairs coming?

How about a poker run / rally?? Give people a chance to get out and drive the countryside. Have different check points hand out raffle tickets or something. Show them your badge and get a raffle ticket. That way even those that don't tow/ship/bring a cobra could still participate.

Thanks for asking, car was back on the road about a month later...the most labor intensive part was making new headers and side exhuast, and also both motor mounts. Definately thought this year was the best of the flings...also hard to pinpoint the most enjoyable part, but sitting around the parking lots at night is right up there....also realize all the people that showed up, didn't come all that way, just to sit around the parking lots....enjoyed not running to KilKare twice in the 95 degree heat....seemed like there was something for everyone, and you had enough choices to pick and choose what you wanted to do....and of course the Rip Chords, who are more than willing to come back again.....I guess what this thread is looking for is a thumbs up or a thumbs down from DV......

if a different or closer venue is wanted for the "party" night and we all liked the hotels so much there is a Large ball feild as we entered the main road to the hotels. Why not a large tent(s) there for nightly hang outs. then every evening people can just chill at the tent if they want and can stagger to their rooms if needed., also its easy to cruise from there if you want to drive or something
I the band night returns is a stage that exspencive to rent also?
it would be a private hang out for the partisipants not that we would chase people away.... unless they bring sheep

I hope it happens. I haven't been yet, on the presumption that there would be a "4" I could attend. Since I've not been there, I have no recommended changes. This year's schedule sounded OK to me.

This year was my first Fling--though sans car due to technical and time constraints--The hotel/motel seemed to be where i met more people--London is great little town and when I spent time just walking around I met or encountered several locals who just thought that it was so neat that all these people showed up with their cars to enjoy their town and for the cause they were there for.
I think that the airport events were great sort of kept things focused--more food/drink/tent things would've been nice(it was HOT)on the asphalt. Think the pilots would agree to closing their airport for 2-3 days?
A poker run could be fun, or a timed rally through the countryside-there are some geat backroads around London, great scenery.

my $.02 cents worth

This was my first attendance at the fling. And even though my Cobra was "laid up", thanks to the generosity of one of our Club members I was able attend with one of his "spare" Cobras.

CACC is very active and we always have a good time, but DVSF III was "over the top". The auto X was first rate...and should be even better if they get the entire parking lot; the downtown London event was great...particularly after spending a few hours in Jim's Bar. The tour of downtown Columbus was a hoot but should be done Saturday since many had already left for home.

IMHO, although the planned events were terrific, hanging out at the hotel was even more outrageous.

There has to be a DVSF IV!

DVSF III was the second such event for me; the first as an owner. I enjoyed the autoX and the get together at the college but wouldn't mind having it somewhere else. Ditto the Friday night dinner at the Lake Choctaw Lodge. I could really do without the local band at the Friday night event, also.

The Saturday events alone were worth the trip. I really enjoyed the parade and the rest of the time in London. I didn't make it out to the QSL until the end of the evening and then realized how much fun I missed.

I left Sunday morning, so I can't comment on Sunday's events. I will definitely plan to attend DVSF IV. If you hold it I will come. Uh, what I mean is...
