Looking for this Book: The Cobra Story as told by Carroll Shelby
I am looking to purchase this book:
The Cobra Story as told by Carroll Shelby and Lyle Kenyon Engel.
The book was published in 1965 by Trident Press and only covers the years up to that.
It's a hardback @ 250 pages and extremely rare because I think he bought up most of the remaining copies.
It was written in the first tense...but more importantly - it documents the details of his initial rides, wins and losses...with all the European sports car companies. I found one at the library and it was missing most the pages.
Anyone have (or know of) a copy they like to sell?

The Cobra story,by Carrol Shelby, as told to John Bently, produced by Lyle Kenyon Engel. Trident press, New York ,1965. I'd trade mine even for a new CAV CSX. No ,really what are they going for?, mine's mint ,with the slip cover.

The Cobra Story
There were several printings of The Cobra Story in hard cover. The first edition costs more than later printings. The cover art changed in later printings and at least one printing has slip cover art and photos in color. I bought mine on eBay and got it autographed at one of the SAAC Vegas events.
The paperback version was also printed by Trident Press in their "Pocket Book Edition" in March of 1967 and renamed "The Carroll Shelby Story." I found mine at a Salvation Army Thrift Shop for 35 cents! (early '80s) I got it autographed, to increase its value.
While getting the paperback version autographed, Carroll remarked that the French version was the tough one to find, so...I filed that thought away for the future. I don't know about French hard cover editions, but the paperback version was printed by Marabout Service in 1966 and titled "Carroll Shelby Des Cobra Aux Ford Du Mans." Once again, eBay was my source. Wow, while pulling out my hardback copy to check its edition (1st 1965) I found another copy of the French version!
It is a good read, but ends just as the Shelby Mustang production and racing is getting going. It has been a long time since I read it. Probably worth a reread, but I do know the ending!
Good luck in your quest!

Thanks Rick, Bwana, Mr. Bruce, FF...appreciate the info...
I did check on ebay and the prices are too much for me. Looks like my Cobra collection will go without this book.
Fast Farmer...since you only have 85 cents invested I'll offer you $25 for that signed copy?! $35? ...talk to me...let's make a deal

Scratch, I actually have $10.35 in my autographed paperback version, but it has much more sentimental value and is not for sale. The only one I would even think about selling is a duplicate French paperback copy. I'm not even sure what I have in it. Sorry.

If I'm any judge of character I would guess the unsigned copies are worth more because they are more rare.

Hello,
My name is Dave. I have an original first edition hard bound one with its origianal
black and white dust cover. This book is like new. it is personaly signed by Carroll
and dated very close to it's printing and release. What he wrote was, (Your racing friend, Carroll Shelby & the date. I have been looking around tofind it's value knowing it is rare. I don't know how much you want or need it but
it won't be cheap. What kind of an offer would you through out?
Regards,
Dave

I paid $48.00 for an autographed copy two years ago. With the death of CS, I believe the value to now be about $100. Why, simple, CS signed just about anything put in front of him from lawn furniture (yes really) to cars and car parts.

Scratch, I have a first edition (not for sale) "as told by Carroll Shelby and John Bentley." As you can see at the bottom of the page here,
Carroll Shelby - Dragonsnakes
the book was published in New York, signed by Carroll, and presented by him in 1965 to John Bentley, the writer. Don't know where Lyle Kenyon Engel comes in.
