All original cobras were built by AC.
To me, a "real" Cobra is called an AC Cobra, (or a Shelby Cobra, which might also be a Mustang).
These are my opinions, and I won't be like Evan and say"period" after my opinions as if no one else's opinion mattered and my opinion was fact.

Johan: You are entitled to your opinion. I understand your position.
All original bodies and chasis for the roadsters were indeed built by AC. Given. However the chasis for the Daytonas were not totally built by AC nor were the proto-type 427s which had extensive testing and develpment by SAI and Ford NOT AC. AC had no role in the design of the 427 body and chasis to my knowledge and had no role in its conception. Nor did they design or develope the improvments to the 289 Cobra that made it a world champ. Without the develpments and improvements made by Shelby there is no way the car was capable of winning world championships. Nor did AC develope the modifcations that gave the FIA 289 and USRRC 289 its appearance.
In the end it was Shelby that put the "Cobra" in the Cobra. AC fabricated the base for Shelby. SAI took it from there. Thats pretty much it.
The cars made by AC aren't made by the same people that made the car in the 60's. Any skilled/competent fabricator can make the body and chasis. In fact but for the labor rates SAI wanted to fabricate the body and chasis for the 427 in the 60's. Kirkham/SAI now build the car to the exact 60's Cobra specifications. The workmanship and fabrication is second to none and eclipses that of the originals.
Today Shelby produces the Cobra he and his talented staff at SAI developed and made famous in the 60's with a new fabricator of body and chasis then in the 60's but to the same specs. The Cobra was his baby and always will be his baby. Period (Sorry couldn't resist)

Evan, all original Cobras with CSX numbers were produced by AC, and I have always heard them refered to as AC Cobras. period.
Nothing against Mr. Shelby or his getting into the replica market, I'm all for it. I wish everyone had one, and it seems that we are headed towards that end.
I'm not against companies making improvements/engine swaps and putting their name on cars either.
Consider Hennessy Vipers, Roush Mustangs, Yenko Camaros, Shelby Mustangs, etc.
We all appreciate the racing panache that Shelby brought to the table. I think he is a great icon of racing heritage, and really pulled off a big one with the race wins over more established teams against the odds.
Your argument that the Kirkham is superior in quality is in line with saying that fuel injection is more efficient than a carb, so put it on a Cobra to improve it. Why don't you go ahead and paint tits on the Mona Lisa while you're at it.
Evan, you are an OK guy, and I've enjoyed your posts as much as anyone's, but quit knocking other people's cars while holding yours up as superior. It is annoying to the new people on the list that do not realize you are kidding.
TC, just because original Cobras were produced by AC does not mean all cars produced by AC are original Cobras. Original Cobras have not been produced in several decades.
Real Cobras are something different, and a "beat to death subject". In my opinion, no new Cobras are real Cobras, like when a guy asks you at the gas station if it is a real Cobra. But if AC makes a car, it has a certain amount of heritage that no other car has, except original cars. It is not an original Cobra though, since it was not made in the sixties.
For what it is worth, I think the AC would have a better chance at entering a vintage race than a csx 4000 car, as the rules are written ( the body and chassis must be produced by the original manufacturer). Thats the only reason I chose an AC, so I could race it.

Shelby< AC? Cobras HMMM I lived in the UK for 6 yrs and went to Brian Angliss' on several occasion, He now calls them the MarkIV or somthing. They actually , physically own the origingal body bucks. And RAM mfg. is the only kitcar company that signed up for the deal of $1,000/car for Shelby's kids based on every car sold..
Now Superformance is AC?? Make ya wonder.. Ole Shel' must've been doing something else other than cook up chili recipes during his 10 yrs in Africa

in the Norfolk area, i really was the team water boy. Small and shrimpy, didn't grow until i was off to college, then worked hard to overcompensate in my first five years in the army, ABN, SF, RGR, jumpmaster, etc. but i really was the little kid that ran out to the huddle with the metal tray with about 24 small dixie cups of water, for the actual players to swig and spit. Worked out of HS in the McLean area, helped build Tyson's Corner. I guess i lacked testosterone or something.

Who is considered the original manufacturer of the original Cobras? (forget who fabricated the chasis and body prior to completion) Shelby American or AC? The manufacture Id plates all say Shelby American CSX****. I believe SAI is considered the original manufacturer.
Thanks for agreeing with me that I'm an OK guy. I'm not knocking anyones car nor is that my intent. A subject is being discussed and I'm discussing it stating the facts as I see them.
I think there is nothing wrong with choosing an AC. Its an awesome car with a great heritage and forever linked with the Cobra and it is made by the same company that made the body and chasis for Shelby originally. Had I not bought a Shelby I would certainly consider an AC.
