I agree with KobraKarl. I did not know previously about Goodwood, but I was very impressed. Not only do you have the legend cars, but you have the legend drivers. Many are driving their legend cars. Also the range of cars from old to modern F1 and everything in between. Anyone that gets a chance to see the show should do so.

Paul:
I am trying to schedule a visit to Goodwood next year.
Would you mind listing a few hotels or B&Bs nearby that you'd recommend? I figure it's best to make reservations well in advance, and nothing like a few deposits to ensure a vested interest in making the trip!
Thanks,
Scott

There are two Goodwood events each year--the Festival of Speed and the Revival meeting. The FOS, which was the subject of the TV show on Speed last weekend, is a "hill climb"-style event that goes up the driveway to the house of Lord Charles March (Goodwood's owner). It is an eclectic event with cars from the antique to the modern and everything in between, including motorcycles, rally cars, etc.
The other annual event is the Revival, which is held each year at the Goodwood motor circuit (also on the grounds of Lord March's estate). It is billed as a "Magical Step Back in Time", and fans entering the infield/paddock areas are required to dress in period costume. No cars newer than 1966, I believe, are allowed in that area of the track, as well. Actors dressed in period garb move through the crowd, performing skits. WWII Spitfires and Mustangs periodically scramble from the grass airstrip (Goodwood was originally a WWII fighter base, and what is now the racing track began as the surface roads around the landing strip), engage Me109 Messerschmitts in mock dogfights, and buzz the track. No racing car newer than 1966 (the last year Goodwood held "real" racing) is allowed. The cars are fantastic and are driven incredibly hard.
Speed Channel should be airing a program on this year's Revival event in the near future. Don't miss it--you'll be grinning when you see how hard they vintage race in Europe.
Goodwood's official website is www.goodwood.co.uk, by the way--
Bob

My bad
In my post just above this one I inadvertently stated that Speed Channel would be airing a program on the Goodwood Revival this coming Saturday evening. That is incorrect--this Saturday they will air a two-hour program on the Monterey Historics (equally worth watching). Their Goodwood Revival coverage should be a month or two down the line--

A nice to place to stay is at the Berkeley Hotel in Worthing. Only about fifteen minutes from the track. Reservations are hard to get during the ROS weekend. This one wasn't bad though. The Hotel sits right on the coast and you can see the ocean about 50 yds. from your room. Worthing is a town of about 80,000. It is about 30 minutes from Gatwick Int'l Airport. Use Gatwick, if you can, as it is about 20 minutes south of Heathrow. The less time I have to spend on English roads, the better.

Cal Metal, you,re right about our roads. Its like one traffic jam after another. I work a night shift every other week and the only good thing about that is the clear roads.
Mind you at Goodwood they have got there parking and leaving sussed. It only took me five minutes to get out of the car park.

Thanks.
I've pre-registered with Goodwood and will contact the folks at Berkeley as soon as the dates for the two events are set. I've got a kid entering college so hopefully at least one of the events will not conflict.
As far as the period-correct garb is concerned, I assume a snap-brim hat and a flask of gin is sufficient. It'll be a bit warm for a proper tweed sport coat.

Scott, the Festival of Speed is June 25-27, 2004. The Revival is September 3-5, 2004. No period dress requirement at the FOS. As far as the Revival, you'd be surprised...Cal or Paul can tell you better what they will/will not accept in the paddock. Based on the photos I've seen this year, anyone dressing like Sherlock Holmes, a WWII fighter pilot, a WWI doughboy, any member of the Beatles, or Laurel/Hardy is a lock to get in. Cal apparently went dressed as Mary Poppins, but that's another story for another day.

Bob:
I appreciate that. Looks like it'll be the FOS. The date's about perfect for my schedule! The Revival will conflict too much with the kids' school calendars.
On the other hand, I'd love to get a photo of Cal sashaying about sporting his parasol! SuperCALifragilistic..........
Are you sure about the origin of his screen name?

Scott, I think you may have hit on something there. I'll let Cal explain himself on that one (now that I've slandered him)...
FOS or Revival, you have my envy. I was all set to go to the Revival a couple of years ago, along with CC members Jeff Karnitz, Bob Evans, and of course Mr. Metal. Bought a fedora hat, bowties, penny loafers, etc. We were due to fly out September 12. September 12, 2001...
Needless to say, that trip was cancelled. Haven't been able to make it there since.

Great photo`s matey, I HAVE to go next year! Do you know if there is a website with the entrants lists....particularly for the TT? I thought from watching the ITV coverage yesterday that 39 PH was running way back in the field, even to the point of being lapped! but from your photo`s, it`s obvious that 644 CGT has been given the 'wrong' paintjob, as it used to be white with red stripes in it`s Willment days. Interesting. I think they mentioned the name Sean Lane when the car was lapped....I thought it was odd at the time.

PDHse.
Good to meet you at Goodwood. Thanks for the comment/question in the Photo gallery. The answer is that I am lucky enough to have friends/colleagues who can arrange photographer's passes at most events. That way you can get really close to the action. They do make you sign a waiver on personal indemnity and as I have has both a CART and ASCAR car crash into the barriers within inches of me in the last year I do understand why.
