Oil Pan question
Could someone point me in a good direction for an oil pan, my car has a run of the mill chrome pan on it and when I drive it the various dips and bumps are catching the drain plug, what is the best way to go and hopefully gain a couple of inches of clearance??? Oh, it's a 351w,if I switch to a different pan say a canton is it just a straight switch,by that I mean a bolt-on,Thanks!!

New pan usually means new oil pump pickup, unless the two pans are the exact same depth. Chrome pans are often leakers, and they keep your oil hot due to their low IR emmissivity. I like milodon pans, they are affordable, robust, and have relatively straight and flat gasket rails.

I have the Milodon Cobra Road Race pan. I've had it in over three years and it has always been leak free. It has an threaded port for the temp sender too. Got the best price from PAW out in CA.

Gordon,
On our cars as low as they are designed I highly recommend cutting a good inch off your Lakewood or McCloud bell housing. It doesn't hurt a thing and allows you to get your car out of most trailers without getting hung up on the bell housing.
I havent cut mine yet but I will when I install a new clutch.

Always avoid chrome anything that seals oil with a gasket unless you bead blast the surface that the gasket seals against. This will give the pan, valve cover or whatever something to "bite" into the gasket.
As for the bottom of the bellhousing, scribe a line tangent with the very bottom of the horizontal section of the bellhousing and saw off--not flame cut--the flange. Don't forget the engine plate.

The teflon skids are about an inch below the pan and, they saved me more than once, I used the old reliable porta band saw on the scatter shield. I like the way a cobra looks when it's low.

I bought my pan from Armondo out n cali (do a search for contact info), he makes a very nice pan. Fully baffled and trap door, windage, 'scraper', new pick up, rail type pan. 8+ quart capacity and I picked up a couple of inches of ground clearence. Aviad style and quality for about a C note less. My install I just unbolted the pan, installed the pick-up and that was it. Didn't need to pull the starter or any thing.
