WIDE HIP on eBAY
Just a note,
CSX 3166 Silver/Black 1966 427 Cobra Wide Hip Car. The car was purchased by Nicholas Cage as the third owner and has 22K original miles. Car had not been restored extensively, however a best unrestored original Shelby award received by Mr Cage in 2001. Am I right in I assuming the "wide hip".....
...refers to the more rounded rear wheel wells/fenders. I have noticed that Contemporaries, FFRS and one other marque have a wide flare, but the actual wheel-well/fender are quite narrow. This shows up especially well in front quarter shots from slightly above (a tall photographer, maybe.. I have noticed that the Arntzes and Butlers have "tweaked" rear wh/wells. You can put 18" in wide wheels in there-----if you could find 'em! So-o-o- did SHelby only make a few of these? I assume the reason he did was for wider wheels/tires.

I wonder why the VIN number is hand scribed instead of stamped on the Vehicle Identification Plate. Are there any other real Cobras that had them like this?

Shin, most, if not all, 427's had the CSX number hand-engraved...
I have seen some 427's with a stamped number plate, but I wonder if they are repro's...replaced during a restoration.
(The 289's had the CSX number and the Engine Number stamped on the plate)

I think the "wide hip" is a reference to the presence of flared lips on the rear fenders. There were a number of mid-production 427's that had no discernible lip whatsoever on the edge of the fender opening; you'll see those cars referred to as "narrow hip" 427s in some of the literature.
Give her a set of Sunbursts and, ooh la la...

Incidentally.. that is a r-e-a-l-l-y nice specimen of a street car...very, very unmolested. Original engine and all...
..but sadly missing the Sunburst wheels.
Interesting to note the car was for sale in Dec 2001, at an asking price of $325k.
...and again up for sale in Dec 2002.
Did Ernie notice the Hawaii plates?

Thank you Ron for the clarification. The same guy must have engraved the chassis and the hood and trunk latches for each car. I wonder if anyone remembers who's job that was at Shelby American?

Actually, the CSX number was stamped on the X-member and one hood latch and the trunk latch... at AC Cars when the roller was built.
..it was only the ID plate that was done at SAI.
Steve (ex-CSX4027) had the 'original guy' engrave his ID plate a few years ago.

Took a quick look at the Registry to provide a few more facts about wide-hip / narrow-hip 427's.
Remember that, originally in 1965, the intention was to build 100 Comp cars...but that didn't fly...ending up making 51 Comp rollers and a few chassis-only's.
When they began making Street 427's (CSX3101), AC still had panels from the Comp design (big rear fenders with flares) in the pipeline, so they were utilized on the early street cars.
However, the street 427 used 7.5" wheels in the rear, instead of the 9.5" ones on the Comp. The boys at SA felt that the smaller wheels looked lost in those big rear fenders, so they initiated a re-design of the rear end...removing the flare and changing the profile slightly. CSX3127 was the "narrow-hip" prototype.
Somewhere around 40 of these cars were made; unfortunately, dealers and customers felt the new design took away some of the .... er,..."sensuality" of the 427 body and didn't like the look.
...so, they reverted back to the "wide-hip" rear for the rest of the 427's production life.
So....the "rarity" is the narrow-hip car... the wide-hip was in the majority.

......why not round first and go for two? Uh-h-h-h, I've seen "kidney bean" wheels, and the other Halibrand ones (like the ones on this car)---I've even seen the old Halibrand ones---but what is the "sunburst" type?

The Sunburst was a ten-spoke wheel design pressed into service when a shortage of the Halibrands used on the S/C and Comp cars arose. I would post a picture but I don't have any on my hard drive and my scanner has taken the evening off. Perhaps Computerworks can post one from his extensive photo files.
There are a number of us here who are fans of the Sunburst, perhaps because of its rarity. I have read that there was a company who reproduced the wheel back in the 80's but I've never seen a set for sale; indeed, I've never seen a Cobra replica with a set on, so if somebody got their hands on a set of them they'd definitely have something that few replica owners have even seen before. On a "street" model 427, i.e., no sidepipes, no hood scoop, no rollbar, they look tremendous, IMHO. I wish somebody like Lynn Park at Trigo would reproduce them...

I think the story was that the Halibrands went scarce and Pete Brock whipped up this design for the street wheel.

In the picture you just posted it looks like the car has outboard rear discs. I thought the originals had inboard brakes?

No production original had inboard brakes.
Early first CSX2000 protoype had inboards, I think, but they were changed prior to any real testing.
