Speaking of used NASCAR parts and motors... Three years ago a local dirt track racer here that runs Fords (very rare around here) would go thru two motors a year....he bit the bullet and bought a used NASCAR motor, not complete, but enough parts to build one from Robert Yates Racing,he had it assembled and ran it all season, hard too,won a lot of races,at the end of the year he had it tore down, they put rings and bearings in it and he ran the same set-up the following year with the same results, still running the engine today three seasons later....
He told me that engine made at least 75 to 100 hp more than any other engine he ever had and costs approx. the price of two of his normal engines..... It was cheaper in the long run, cause in three seasons he is still on the same engine and still winning, whereas he would have gone thru at least 6 regular engines.
The NASCAR stuff is certainly top shelf and first class parts and pieces and used goes for a song.....
You can go the Ernie Elliot's site and look at his engine prices and order one.... All new stuff is NOT cheap, but "slighty" used parts are.... At the Rousch site a while back they were advertising used ring & pinion gears sets with less than 500 miles per set that were all lightened and deburred and most were hand polished for $125.00 to $150.00.....Most any gear ratio you could imagine...Top shelf parts for a good price.....

The cost I've heard associated with NASCAR motors IN the cars and ready to RUN the race was in excess of $50K, pushing $75K. I have seen the "used parts" NASCAR prices which are in comparison "ultra cheap". Bear in mind a "race ready" NASCAR engine is dry sump, (less friction) and includes all the "goodies" you won't get in a "street" version. Not sure I would want a dry sump system for the street by the way, but maybe.

I can't see how a carb'd cobra would use $2,500- worth of AN fittings?!? I know it's dry sumped, but still......

Each fitting costs $500, as they are the Carroll Shelby Signature Series AN fittings.

You can wet sump the motor with an external pump like I did. No room for the tank. I baught mine used thru RDI and had them go thru it, dyno and brake it in. Scott

Dry sumps use a lot of fittings, and they're big, so they are pricey. Each swivel elbow attached to the pan for the evac stages, cost about $75 a piece. Those little guys add up, but he's probubly giving the retail price for all those fittings, and hose. Good thing the fittings are reuseable.

I have bought 100 octane low lead AvGas from a small private airport nearby. But I can't pull the car up to the pump. I have to pump it into a 5 gallon can, then carry it over and pour that into the car. PITA, but my engine loves that stuff...
U can put 100 octane gas at airport. Ure motor will enjoy it like hell. U only got one minor problem, u will need to change ure oxygen sensor after 10-12 miles...enjoy the power of the plane !!! lol

Av Gas is not that great of a race fuel. It is made to be used at high altitude, it's vapor pressure is low, other stiff like that. I can buy leaded race gas by the gallon from the local dyno shop, he usually has 114 or 116.

I buy VP 110 octane leaded and mix it (half and half) 92 octane pump gas. My motor loves it and you can tell a considerable difference when I run just pump gas...Plus that leaded stuff smells soooo good

The lead I know is a problem for the catalytic converters. But will impact the O2 sensors, injectors etc.?

Howdy,
The current Nascar compression rule is 12.00:1cr. Its been that way for several years.
Today, Bobby LaBonet turned his SB2 Chevy ( a 357 cid SBC w/ SB Ford heads) about 9,900rpm's when he shifted into 2nd instead of 4th and it stayed together.
Depending on the track, they sometimes turn their engines over 9,200rpm's on every lap (usually on the tracks 1 mile or shorter). The engines that they ran in todays race had to run between 550 and 700 miles.
You could build a Nascar style engine for the street (milder cam and 'bout 11.0:1 cr), kept the revs below 8,000rpm's, it would last a long time, say 3 years @ 10,000 miles a year, maybe more. You would need the change the valve springs once a year. Maybe your cam, lifters and pushrods after the 2nd year. Just my $.02 .
I'm building a 351C that I'm planning to turn 7,000rpm's and drive about 10,000 miles a year. I'm planning on it last 3 years before refreshing(rings, bearings, cam, lifters and valve springs).

Unocal sells unleaded 100 octane at select stations & outlets, about $4.95 per gallon. Seems to be popular with the Rice Rocket crowd with turbos and nitrous, and some of the water craft crowd.
