favorite sports car
If you cannot include Cobras, it depends on you define sports car; if includes cars that in their time were classified as prototypes? Always liked the '59 Ferrari Testa Rossa, the '61 shark nose that ran at Le Mans, the GTO, the Aston DB4 Zagato, Jaguar D type. Tojero Lister, Can Am McLarens and Lolas, Shadow, the list goes on. . .

Sports car or Exotic?
Well now we HAVE to have some standards!
Mustang is BORDER LINE "sports car" at best. GTO? Fuh get about it.
2 passenger only? Nah, 4 place is OK. Like the Austin Healey 3000 is "four place". SO, the sports car criteria would have to be a certain cubic feet of interior space, overall car weight and two worthless back seats will still let you "in"! !
McClaren F1, Lambo, Ferrari as sports cars? Hmmmm,,,,,they might be "exoctics", a different category!
Oh man,,,,somebody let that heavy weight Vette in, it aint right I tell you! Niether sports car nor exotic....wait,,,,, the 1953 model would have to be "sports car". 1963? To heavy to qualify?
Whew,,,it is complex!

Lancia Stratos. Maserati Ghibli, and Toyota 2000GT - I will send my mailing address if the offer still stands...
For me, it would be the E-Type, Ferrari 250LM, the Berlinetta Lusso, and the Figoni e Filaschi Talbot Lagos - oh, and a Chapparal 2C or 2D.

Lamborghini Miura
Yes, it was inspired by the GT40, but the Mid Engine TRANSVERSE V12 is very much an original design.

I have a 240Z sitting in the back of my garage collecting dust. I bought it new in '72. Make me an offer.
Ernie:
Great pick of that Maserati. What a roof line. Some of the really great Coupes had very low windshields. That is one neat car.
Decooney:
That XJ13 is outstanding. Looks a little like a Ferrari 250 LM.

Miura!
Tom got it right. I'd read 3 1/4 pages of this thread marveling that the real Daddy of Lambos (sorry Buzz & Countach lovers) wasn't mentioned.
As beautiful as it is in print, the Miura is eye-poppingly sexy in person. Anyone who's ever seen one on the street in the midst of ordinary machinery can attest to it's status as an automobile diety. Not to mention revolutionary in the most complete sense. All other mid-engine sports cars of Italian flavor owe their existence to the Miura.
I saw Nick Cage straffing Tampa Avenue in the Valley one evening in his original maroon Miura SVJ (one of six ever built). Sheetmetal formed of molten sex, and the sound of that V12 was unholy. Whew. I need a cold shower.

First, a clarification on the Miura SV Jota. Only one original was built by Bob Wallace as a hobby at the Lamborghini factory and later totalled by a mechanic showing it of to his girlfriend. All other Jotas built after that one are REPLICAs including that owned previously by Nick Cage. Nonetheless one of the timeless designs.
Here's a photo of my favorite design in my driveway:

The Lambo Miura gets my nod for vintage (I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned sooner in the post) I also have a soft spot for the Ferrari Dino...it may not have the big 12 cylinder engine, but it still has that classic Ferrari sound and curvacious body.....as for the present.. I still love the look of the Saleen S7. Beautiful sleek lines which looks even better in person! I wish I had an available pic that I could attach with this post. :-(
If anyone has one handy, please share it with us for those who may not know what the car looks like.

No doubt guys, about the sheer beauty of the Miura. An object of my adolescent (and adult) lust to be sure. For this topic though, its admitted inspiration from the GT40 design rules it out as an "original".
Duane - you win the "Murder she wrote" detective award of a body massage performed by Angela Lansbury herself for sleuthing that license plate clue. Great work you lucky dog you!
BTW, great call on the Jag XJ13. Possibly a hands down winner for pure fluid beauty!
