Cal, I have been told that Fritz is running like 550hp in that 347, is that true? I ran a 2:30 at road america so a good driver is certainly capable of 2:25 to 2:27's. Don Roberts was running 2:32's a few years back. Most of the shelby spec racers are in the low 2:30s also. I would be interested in the changes fritz has made, if any to his cobra. Scott

Who has the best handling Cobra? I would guess that setup is the hard part of this question. SPF has a dealer network that offers custom shocks, sway bars, etc to assist their owners with setup. How many builder really know who to "setup" their cars.

Challenge indeed!!!
Since Excaliber was the one to make this statement, I propose the following:
1 standard JBL with either a 302 or 351 Ford crate motor, Tremec TKO with .8 overdrive, 3.73 rear axle ratio. Hoosier DOT radials. (Standard Carrera dampers.)
1 standard BDR with either a 302 or 351 Ford crate motor, Tremec TKO with .8 overdrive, as close as possible BMW rear ratio. Hoosier DOT radials. (You are allowed the "Sport" series suspension as offered. No special dampers IE Penskes etc.)
Note: Both cars must have the same engine size, pick which one you like. Also, suspension settings must be to stock factory specs for road use.
Venue should be any proper race circuit in the US.
Now the real kicker, Both cars to be driven 15 laps of said circuit by the same driver who has no experience with either car, nor any factory affiliation.
The driver must be the one who made the challenge. (Please note: all expenses to be paid by said driver.)

HDR....not BDR...see how things get distorted in a short span?
To offroadr35 If you are looking for just a track car, HDR makes a spec racer that may serve your needs together with some suspension and rear end tricks. You owe to yourself to talk with Rick Ellis before you spend the big $$$....

Psssst Ernie,
Make sure that the fine print stipulates that the driver gets to keep the winning car as payment for the free publicity.
Have a good one,
Dan

From everything I've read I would agree with those who say JBL.

I don't know which one is better, but after what Tony Martin did in that BDR at run and gun, my feeling is that the BDR can hold its own against the best out there
Just my 2 cents
Here's your change

SEE RICHARD HUDGIN'S CHALLENGE ABOVE
The BDR is a great car for the price, and I applaud using BMW 3/M3 suspension front and rear but ....
There is absolutely no comparison.

Does this mean that the Backdraft can't be lowered by collapsing the coil springs with a torch, like on Martins car? or might that be stock factory spec on BDR?
Not to try and take anything away from Backdraft, but I'm not convinced that Tony Martin proved that Backdrafts were the best handling Cobras at R&G. What I think he did prove is, that HE was the best at handling Cobras at R&G.

Scott: I think that the times tell the actual story at Run & Gun. There were several cars in the 108s and any driver skilled enough to turn 108s has the skill to turn 107s if the car will allow it. Tony did what he did in a basically production car against some very talented drivers in cars built to race. Let's not pretend he was the only good driver at the event.
The BDR is not purpose built from the ground up to race. It's an all around driver without adjustable suspension, brake bias, race shocks, and other track only gadgets and goodies. With that said, we'll gladly slap on some stiffer springs (even heat them with a torch to get the ride height back down) and run head to head with any purpose engineered race car. Even the JBL.
This challange thing sounds fun. A little friendly head to head is good for the soul. After all, we're all here cause we love driven' these darn machines no matter who makes em'.

This sounds fun.
Steve,
Uhhh, maybe I wasn't so far off suggesting you check out Backdraft. They don't seem to be afraid of putting up. I'd love for your thread to have instigated a little friendly track competition.
Though I have to say, Ernie and I are kind of like the weasely skinny kids egging on two thugs at school into a fight. "OOOh, did you hear what he said about your momma? You gonna take that?"
Ernie doesn't have experience with either, but I don't even OWN a Cobra. So I volunteer myself as the driver. I know, I know, it's dirty work, but someone has to do it

Woudn't the best way to compare them is to allow the manufacturers to each prep a car and then get a "pro" driver to drive both? All on the same day, etc. to keep things on an even playing field.
I nominate you all come to Firebird Raceway and have Bob Bondurant do it. The fact that I live 6 minutes away from track and his driving school facility has nothing to do with it.
