The ignorance of the Gen X generation and failure to appreciate and learn history. The great cars of the past are being forgotten in favor of the Ricers with race stickers, window tint, aerofoils and hydraulics, boom box systems and annoying exhausts.
Today all you need is an aerofoil on your trunk lid to qualify as a performance car.
I hate ricers.

In my opinion, the two major threats to our hobby of muscle cars / kit cars / reproductions / restorations-rods is:
the state governments (who can make it real hard to get your car registered (noise, polution controls, lighting, provenance of major parts, ground clearance, etc)
the auto insurance companies (who can limit our use or raise our rates, or totally refuse to cover our cars). This is the industry's reaction to bad experiences (losses).
I think that good high-octane fuel availability may some day be an issue as well?
This is a gloomy subject. Sorry for being so serious.

Government and Drivers
I think the biggest issue, at least in some states, are the state governments. I'm really glad I don't live in CA. It's difficult to title a Cobra in PA, but I think it's fair (with no pre-set quota's per year, etc.)
The second biggest issue are irresponsible owners. I am going through the process of insuring my car, and it's amazing how many companies will not even consider insuring the car for any price. Too many losses and fatalities don't help any of us.
And hey, I'm a computer geek and can still turn a wrench.

greg,
I don't want to hijack my own thread (which would not be a first for me) but, I still don't get the insurance difficulties some folks are having.
I can't for the life of me understand how insurance is not an issue for all the motorcycles out there. I can't imagine the loss ratio on our cars being so much higher than the 18-25 age group on crotch rockets. Due to the the weight of our cars, when an accident does happen, we very seldom inflict much more damage to someone else than a bike does.
I just don't understand the coverage and the denial of coverages when they have no problem with bikes.

TO QUOTE POGO:
"WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND HE IS US".
I DON'T BELIEVE THAT THE DEMISE IS IMMINENT. IN SPITE OF US.
I BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE GOING TO BE BIG SPEED BUMPS AHEAD, MAINLY DUE TO THE INCREASING DIFFICULTY IN OBTAINING INSURANCE. A SUBJECT NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART SINCE I JUST RECEIVED MY PREMIUM NOTICE FROM THE FOLKS AT HAGGERTY INSURANCE. $3605.OO FOR THE YEAR - AND THAT'S WITH LIABILITY COVERAGE OF 25K / 50K.
I HAVEN'T PUT A SCRATCH ON AN AUTOMOBILE OR HAD A MOVING VIOLATION SINCE JANUARY OF 1964. (ON ANY GIVEN DAY - - I'D RATHER BE LUCKY THAN GOOD. THAT THUMPING YOU HEAR IN THE BACKGROUND IS ME KNOCKING ON WOOD). THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN STOPPED - IT ONLY MEANS THAT I'M A BETTER THAN AVERAGE BS,ER. IT ALSO DOESN'T MEAN THAT I HAVEN'T SCARED THE HELL OUT OF MYSELF A FEW TIMES.
NONE THE LESS - - I STILL THINK IT'S EXORBITANT. I'M PAYING A HELL OF A PRICE TO COVER THE LOSSES GENERATED BY THE GUYS WHO CAN'T SEEM TO "KEEP THE DIRTY SIDE DOWN".
NOW - HAVING SAID ALL THAT - I'M STILL INCLINED TO BLAME THAT SEDITIOUS B!TCH, JANE FONDA.
Y'ALL HAVE A REALLY GREAT - AND SAFE - DAY.
BLACKJACK
PS: BY THE WAY - IT'S NOT THE MONEY AS MUCH AS IT IS THE HEARTBREAK OF SEEING ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS LOSE HIS COBRA - OR WORSE. BE SAFE - YOU GUYS ARE ALL "TOO COOL" TO LOSE.

Does it make sense...?
Turk,
I agree, it does not seem to make a lot of sense to me either. I'm sure the insurance companies are suffering some horrendous medical claims from the many young guys on their superbikes. I'm not sure how the kids can afford to insure their bikes, unless it's mommy and daddy footing the bill.
What's really interesting is that PA has just repealled the helmet law. Now it you are over 19 you can ride sans helmet. Of course what is really silly is that we still have a mandatory seat belt law. I guess if I ride a motorcycle I can make my own choices, but if I drive a car I can not.
The one quote I have received is thankfully a lot less than what Blackjack is being asked to pay, but it's still a lot of money. I can afford to pay it, but I'm concerned there are so few options.
I really don't have all of the facts. Are the insurance companies justified in their aversion to insuring our cars? I don't know. The fellow that appraised my car said that within the past 6 months he has seen things start to turn around where more companies are willing to write policies, we'll see.

The State of California and government in general are definitely right there at the top of the list.
We should all vote republican. This would help a bit...
What I like to know is why Curt Scott on the list? Doesn't he strive to protect and promote the kit car industry?
On a side note, I am sure the $3605/year insurance cost for Blackjack is for more than one car, at least I sure hope so?

Age I see as the biggest threat. Will the Cobra clan get smaller as "we" move steadily toward retirement? I suspect as much.

The Cobra will go because there are cars that are fast, great looking AND comfortable. As the performance envelope widens more and more, the Cobra becomes more and more outdated. I liken it to the Stutz.....awesome for it's day, but it's day has gone.

UH, YEAH - -
THE $3605.00 IS FOR THE ERA COBRA, THE EXCALIBUR COBRA, THE ERA GT-40 AND THE 20 FOOT CAR TRAILER.
THE POINT IS - - TWO YEARS AGO IT WAS $2400.00 AND INCLUDED LIABILITY COVERAGE AT 300/500K. IT ALSO INCLUDED NO DEDUCTIBLES WHICH HAS CHANGED. I REALLY LIKE THE FOLKS A HAGGERTY BUT THE LIABILITY ISSUE IS GOING TO FORCE ME TO LOOK ELSWHERE. I TRIED MY REGULAR INSURANCE COMPANY AS WELL AS SPECIALTY COMPANIES AND I CAN'T GET DECENT LIABILITY COVERAGE ALONE ON CARS THAT THEY ARE NOT INSURING.
VERY FRUSTRATING. SOMEWHAT OF A "CATCH-22".
Y'ALL HAVE A REALLY GREAT DAY.
BLACKJACK
