Question Has Anyone Built a Four Wheel Drive Cobra, Yet?

Hey Guys,

Last night I was reading my new issue of Grassroots Motorsports. There is an article about an Eagle Talon. The four cylinder turbo engine setup was not very radical, yet it was making over 1,000 horsepower and tuns the quarter mile in 8.76 seconds! The owner describes launching it carefully so he doesn't break drive train parts and how the four wheel drive allows him to put all the power down.

There was an article a few months ago comparing the BMW 330ci, the Subaru WRX and the Acura Integra with the same power and exactly the same tires. The idea was to find out which handled better, rear, front or 4 wheel drive. The WRX clearly demonstrated the advantage of 4 wheel drive and won easily.

I'm thinking, if I had it all to do over again, I may have built a 4WD Cobra. Has anyone tried this yet?

Paul

Sounds like a job for Jessie James and the MONSTER GARAGE. Monday night they made a 4wd out of a 76 Corvette.

I own a WRX and love the AWD. ESX Motorsports makes a 740hp WRX do the 1/4 in 9.6 seconds. Just image if the car weighed 500-800 pounds lighter (like a Cobra).

I've done some research on the WRX and Evolution drivetrains and concluded that the 4cyl engines sit to far forward and are to tall to fit under a stock looking Cobra body. The WRX engine is actually in front on the front wheels which would leave no room for the radiator. Maybe the drive train from an old AWD turbo/intercooled V6 GMC Cyclone or Typhoon would work better.

Talking 4X4 Cobra

There is an Aussie from Queensland OZVENOM who frequents the Australian CC section that has an AWD turboed quad cam beast.

Matt762,my last car was a Suraru Legacy LSI wagon, with the high output 2.5,quad cam engine.I have to say that it was probably the most well balanced little hotrod I have ever owned-it flat did everything well!I only had one time that the car ever lost traction in the six years I owned it,and that was because I was airborne(can't override the laws of physics, unfortunately).I hope Subaru brings back a sport coupe like the SVX soon, and makes it in Lafayette,Indiana like the Legacys.I would like to see a Cobra fit with the 6-cyl high output from the upper end Outback, and the wonderful and compact AWD system.Talk about an ideal 4-season daily driver!

Plans are in the works. Here is the Subaru B11S concept:

"As well as four-wheel drive there's a twin-turbocharged three-litre flat-six engine, developing a very handy 395bhp at 6400rpm. There's also 403lb ft of torque available from just 3600rpm and despite a fairly lardy kerbweight of 1580kg performance should be pretty sparkling - although no official figures have been released."

Matt,I don't know how I missed the B11S-I must subscribe to at least 8 car rags.Love the 2+2 concept with suicide doors.Power numbers look great, and the six cyl. Boxer is no doubt turbine smooth achieving them.Looks like Subaru has just one-upped the RX8,if it makes it to production.
