dual quads
I am needing carburation for my new motor,I had decided on a single 4bbl,mostly for cost, but I love the look and torque of two 4's
I have found a nice complete original set up,med riser ford intake,c5af carbs,linkage and fuel log,nice condition,is 1500 a good price ?
thanks again,,Tim

Tim,
IF....those are truly original 2x4 carbs,..And the manifold is clean and free of heliciols etc..that is not a bad deal..
give me the list # off the air horn and I can tell you if they are correct.

Holley is making the vintage carbs with the correct numbers on the airhorns. You can get them from Branda's or Carl's Ford parts for about $1000.00 for the pair, brand spanking new and correct! Just a suggestion because I am looking also and any original carbs I have found need a rebuild and replating. About $300.00 to $400.00 each!! You also have to make sure the manifold was not ported or any major repairs. Cracks and stripped threads are very common on aluminum intakes. ust my 2 cents, Sal.

Keep in mind a couple of rather important issues. First, dual quads are not going to give you much HP return on your investment. A single 4 brl carb gives you plenty of air. Second, keeping dual quads properly syncronized and tuned is a pain.
I think if you want more HP, you can get that for your money through many other better means.

Tim,
The medium riser dual quad intakes ae hard to find. I have been looking for a C7AE or the C7ZX MR Intake for a year without much luck.

If they're set up correctly, there's no more maintenance than a single carb. They don't add much horsepower and they don't do much for your gas mileage, but they look and sound fantastic.

Karl,,
The carb numbers are c5ae-Bu and BT
I realize what you guys are saying,I od dissagree on the maintenence, once there right, there right,I have a dual quad set up now on my other motor,I dont think i would go to a single four for 100 Hp,,just the awesome looks and sound,I realize i can get more HP for my money by other means, but by that rationale a vette would be the way to go,,Nothing says " I'm Bad" like 2 yours,,except maybe webers,,
thanks for the help guys,,Tim

Tim,
2x4 carbs require a little more time to dial in (not much)and require almost nothing there after...
also there is a significant hp increase with 2x4's up to 40....
The # I need are the LIST # on the air horn , you gave me the ford part #.......(which are the correct ones ,)...but the LIST # will confirm.
Oh yea ....they also look ...bad ass.

the set up i am talking about is dual plane, a couple have told me I need a single plane intake for a light car.I am tending to believe that since there is more than usable torque on the low end any way.
Whats the census ? 454 fe,cam profile peaks in the 65 to 66 hundred rpm range,6800 redline, would I benefit greatly by single plane ?
This set up has no intake cast number, only fomoco ,and the firing order, who ever said it was right, for maybe another hundred bucks i can get a new blue thunder and new carbs,it isnt like my car is "matching numbers " any way,,still on the fence though,,Tim

Tim,
That set up is getting pretty rare......the lack of a part # identifies the manifold as original , not otc......Torque is king .....keep the dual plane........you have the exact setup i'm running ....i wouldnt trade it for any thing else,........now what are those LIST #'s

Karl,I emailed for those numbers, according to my ford book the bu carb is 780,,makes me think either the set is mismatched,or way too much,,
I will let you know when I get the numbers, thank you again for the help,,
Dove sells matched 725 cfm carbs for 750 per pair, that dosent sound bad if I have to put together my own setup,,

Too much carb...
Yes. but do you really want to run 1450cfm? Are you running 11-12:1??? at WOT or driving at Lemans? I would go with the Holley 450's or 600's max.

Thanks Karl,,
btw,,I am running two 715's now on my high rise,,they work great, the high rise looses some crispness on the low end,,but pulls like a freight train all the way to shift points and beyond,,Tim

KobraKarl,
I hope you guys don't mind my adding to this thread.
I have the same dual-quad setup you have (This set up has no intake cast number, only fomoco ,and the firing order....) and I don't know what Ford vehicle it came from. Do you have any idea what year(s) and model(s) of cars that Ford used this configuration? I'm just curious and would like to be able to explain it to friends.
Thanks!

CCompt,
We dont own this thread.... ....If you have the midriser, it came on some fairlane's , galaxy's...and I think even a few commets and Falcons, If you have the low riser it would be Fairlanes and Galaxy's.........The later versions that were in the Mustangs had a part # cast in the manifold.

Karl,
Not sure if your still subscribed to this, but just an update.
I ended up getting the dual 4 set up,i should have it in my hands tomorrow,it seems to be the same intake you have from looking at your pics, and i got the original air cleaner also, I know it is not cobra correct, but I may run it,I think it will be cool ,I was able to negotiate a bit better price than the 1500 and a customer is picking it up in St Louis to bring it here,if for any reason I decide not to use it i will let you know,I sure do like those dove air gap intakes,,lol thanks for the help,,Tim
