Default A Cobra keeps kicking my a$$

...in Gran Turismo 3 on PS2! Racing in downtown Seattle. I have a SVT Cobra R. Dem Shelby's is fasssst!

Yeah I'm 37 and yes I still like video games! I have to stay in practice for when my son is old enough to play ( That's the story I sold my wife anyway ) I'm reading a book on race driving techniques and I decided to try to apply it on GT3....it works pretty well. The game is a pretty amazing simulation...it will even cost you $500,000 to buy a Shelby Cobra!

I love GT3, got a ton of cars now, finished 95% of the game. The GT-40 is also another cool ride. That Cobra will spin if you give to much throttle coming out the corners, hey, just like for real!

Doubt I will ever finish it 100%, the last few races are impossible to win (I'm pretty sure).

I love playing GT3. Seattle is one of the few tracks where the Cobra does well. Try the Cobra on Laguna Seca--tough. You have to win some better cars, Joe. The SVT Cobra ain't gonna cut it. Start winning races and you will win some more competitive cars. For instance, the Camaro (bite my tongue) Race car (973 HP) and even better, the Zhonda--an absolute monster. Then you can start tearing it up.

That Zhonda has terrible brakes, they over heat to quick. Now the XJ220 is cool, even when the tires are worn out and the brakes glowing red that sucker STILL drives OK.

The Viper, modified to 1000 h.p. was the fastest top speed car for a long while, then I found one even faster!

Seatle is indeed one of the best tracks for the Cobra, but it's a HARD track to learn!

Toyota GT-1 race car, 1350 h.p. 274 mph top speed.
Viper, 1000 plus h.p., 270 mph top speed.
Cobra, 726 h.p., 225 mph (and very "squirly" even in a straight line).

The trick is to win a Formula car. Fastest way around Laguna.

Joe,

I picked up a PS 2 Ford Racing program for my grandson at Christmas... Figured I'd get a jump on him and learn the game so I wouldn't be embarrassed, as usual, when we got down to playing it...
I finally got it to work and I was running a 49 or 50 Ford down the road through cones... I lasted about 2 minutes before I got green and had to turn the machine off... I swear I thought I was going to throw up.....
So much for PS 2...

I bought another game called "SpongeBob Squarepants and the War to Save Bikini Bottom."...More my speed......
I just hope I don't get seasick....

In Proffesional League (with the Formula car) the trick becomes pit stop strategy. The last pit stop is critical.

Seattle basically pit every 5. THEY pit about every 9 or 10, but they run pretty slow after they get 5 laps on the tires. You will be 5th or 6th place till late in the race, then you'll start picking them off toward the end (if you didn't screw up your pit stops).

Get the Formula 687S, it's the fastest one, but harder on tires than the FO90.

What league are you in? Do you have a wheel?

I just got GT3 and in the amateur league now. I just beat the Cobra at Seattle tonight with a modified RX7 w about 380 hp. Go spend some dough and get good tires and suspension upgrades. Took me lots of practice but eventually qualified 1st. Both the AC and the Vette got me off the line but I got em in turns 5 and up. That game is freakin blast.

I lightened the Cobra R and upgraded the brakes and have been able to qualify 3rd....but I'm still driving like crap. Once I learn the track a bit better I think I can win without further modifying the car. Tire upgrade would probably help though.

Anyone try this game with a steering wheel and pedals?

BTW...glad to see I'm not the only gray hair kid playing GT3!

Easy money
Go to Super Speedway in the Beginner League and keep racing the same level for easy money.

Go to the Beginner League and race in NA to get 5,000 credits.

If you have a good car, go to the Amateur League and race in NA for 10,000 credits.

If you have a very good car, go to the Amateur League and race in GT All-Stars in the test course to get 25,000 credits. Note: Buy the cheapest tires, as they last longer.

Get a fast car and race the Speedway in the Final Series Race in the Beginner League to win 10,000 credits.

I'm Professional league. All cars and tracks are unlocked. I've placed first in 95% of the races. As you get up there the competition gets really fierce. You CANNOT win unless you set your car up for correctly for each track. Gearing is the most important, followed by the suspension settings. Proffesional league will FORCE tire wear, you can't turn it off. So, get used to "saving your tires" and running a harder compound. Set your gear ratio to max rpm at the end of the fastest part of the track. Keep your first three gears low to pull hard out of the corners. 4th and 5th is where the big jump in ratio's come in.

The further you get, the more REAL it becomes!

Well, up to about 6 months ago, GT3 was just another one of those video games that my son's just played in their bedrooms and I discounted it as yet another poor simulation of real racing.
Then, This guy calls me up and invites me to come visit him where he is building some prototypes of a racing simulator. (He was interested in purchasing some of my products to promote his new simulators).

I took him up on the offer and allowed myself maybe 30 minutes at his office for an appointment. 6 Hours later, he finally asked me to leave because it was now close to 9PM and he needed to go home.
The simulator?...Posted below with the web link.

I now have 2 of these on order for delivery early next year. I went home after my "Racing experience" on the simulatorand tried my hand at GT3 on PS2, and there is absolutely NO comparison between racing GT3 at home and racing GT3 on this simulator. I don't care what kind of stereo you have, or what kind of monitor you are using, this thing will blow you away! I literally needed earplugs after an hour or so. Even the rumble strips are heard and felt in this machine.

I usually find that I can beat 90% of the professional league
with the C5R or the Viper with the right pit strategy and set up. The vette is tough to race because its so damn heavy but I like to race with American Thunder. I use the GT40 but it has a lot of understeer that takes a ton of tire wear to get to drive correctly..tough to beat the cars that don't use the tires as much. The Viper and the Calsonic Le Mans cars usually kick the snot out of everyone except the GT1 car. Both cars must be set up with max hp--the Calsonic must be used with the stage 4 supercharger. I've spent untold hours on the machine and can generally win 2nd place on first try on the professional level. My wife hates that I'm so into the game....I also have F12002 and F1 Career challenge that are equally fun. Try Gamefaqs.com for tips. The Cobra is a lot of fun but doesn't cut once you start racing the race cars....seattle is definitely one of the most fun tracks.

Yes, it is a little pricey, but once you try GT3 in that machine, there is no going back...it is THAT awesome. Besides, it is alot cheaper than replacing Hoosiers, and there are no blown motors. When racing head-to-head, there is no better racing! It was certainly alot cheaper than doing open-track 3 or 4 times a year! (No insurance, either)

I'd get the Logitech wheel, attach it a TV tray in front of the big screen TV with your favorite comfy chair and take the balance of $19,700 and buy yourself a nice FFR.
