Xenon headlights in a Cobra?

Has anyone fitted a set of Xenon headlights in their Cobra?

Can it be done? What is actually available out there?

We all know how fast our beloved cars can go, but I do wonder sometimes when I'm driving fast in the dark if visibility can be improved more like a modern car.

I would be interested in converting my standard headlights to Xenon if such a kit was available?

while not xenon lights, there are a variety of headlights out there that might be better than what ya got. form Performance Unlimited, these 2 styles for example, tri-light and crystalite :

Try about $1200 from Bell of HID...ran across a kit at this website...click on "available kits"...and can anyone tell me how to snip the URL to something simple?

I just replaced the headlights in my '57 'Bird with Wagner sealed-beam units from NPD (a Mustang/T'Bird parts vendor). They look like conventional headlights, yet are reported to be brighter than regular Halogen bulbs. Wagner part number is H6024BL; available from NPD @ $14.95 each.

My experience so far trying to get "brighter" or "whiter" bulbs for my Miata and Mountaineer have been very dissappointing. I have tried two or three different brands (of "bright white" replacement Halogen bulbs), and have yet to find any that will last more than a few months (yes, I am installing them with surgical gloves, no skin contact).

The new Wagner sealed beams appear to be much brighter than the standard OEM sealed beams I replaced. Hopefully, they will last as long as an OEM lamp, too.

I set the car up for fog on last year's rally to Santa Cruz. The headlights are HIDs. They only draw 35 Watts, but put out an amazing amount of light. Much more than 100 watt halogens. Since my HIDs are low beam only, I use the spots for high beams. They each have a 140 Watt halogen bulb. The fogs are runing 100 Watt halogen bulbs.

I tried the Xenon bulbs. They are just cheap replicas of real High Intensity Discharge lights. The blue color is not better than white halogens. If you want a color, go with yellow, it really helps in misty or foggy conditions.

One of the guys I rally with, has rainbow color headlights in his Subaru WRX. Sometimes they look red or pink or blue. It's eye catching but odd. He says that the light looks normal from the driver's seat.

On a recent rally, one driver came up and complimented me on the HID lights. He said when I came up behind him, the road just lit up like daylight. He turned his headlights off because they didn't make any difference. I believe that the combination of the super bright HID bulbs and the large 7" round reflectors is a great combination.

Yes, I converted my ERA Lucas Tripole lights to HID 6000K units. The ballast and bulb work very well on the charging system (very low draw) and the light is a crystal white color.

Has anyone tried the new Silver Star headlights? They promise a lot in their advertisements and they are inexpensive.

I received a few emails about the conversion so I will address them here instead of emailing you back ( I am lazy today )

1. How much does it cost? The "quality" kits range from $375-$600 but be careful that you know what you are buying. There are many low quality kits out there that start around $250. You can find some deals on Ebay but make sure you get a warranty and good ballast.

2. Is it difficult to install? Takes about an hour but is straight forward.

3. Do you have pictures? I only have pictures of the kit I developed about 2 years ago. It is below. No, I do not yet stock these but will sometime this next year and include the 7" crystal housings (too many projects going on right now)

I did a lot of research on these lights before i assembled the components. Whatever you do, get good quality bulbs, don't touch them directly with your fingers (when installing) and keep the ballast inthe engine compartment or cowl - not under the fender.

I put a pair of Hella beams in and they did the job for me. They cost about a $100 and no problem with the install.
