I tend to think that somewhere in his mind he thinks he can pull off one more miracle before his days are done so he's fighting for everything within his grasp. Topping the Cobra, even with another, seems a little impossible in these times though. All in all his batting average, if that's what you want to call it, has been pretty good so long as he sticks to designing & building cars. Of course thats left wide open & subject to opinion....

CS, not exactly a hero to me. BUT, I would LOVE to sit down over a few brews and here stories of the old days. Those are the times I admire and honor about him. I am just affraid that I could not afford the check!

I get the strong impression Shelby just loves cars. Loves to be around them, consult on building them, be involved with them. I know I feel that way, always have.

It's wonderful that the man has been able to pursue his passion all these years. An athelete may "retire", but they often "stay in the game". As coach, investor, consultent, announcer. Shelby is no different in that regard.

If "money" comes with the position, I don't have a problem with that, and the man deserves not only the money but the accolades that may come with following his passion.

Joe Gibbs is returning to football at 60 plus years old as coach of the Red Skins again. Whaddya think? He should have quit years ago? He's only in it for the money? He's to old to spend it now anyway? MAYBE, the man just loves football (and the contract they gave him wasn't bad either)!

The Red Skins are as happy to have Gibbs back as Ford was to have Shelby back! Life is good, I raise a my glass to the "old geezers" still in the game (and getting paid for it too)!

Some of you know CS personally?

I think I heard something totally different when he was interviewed than what others did, especially the humility in saying It was THE CAR that made HIS name, rather than His NAME making the car what it is.

Only on Club Cobra money is a bad word. Especially wanting to make more of it at an old age.

He probably has more money than he can spend, and like others at that age and even younger may be in the game to leave more money to his children and his grandchildren.

Then there is the remote possibility he likes doing what he does, and wouldn't mind seing his name in the spotlight and adding to his kegacy once again.

For the life of me, I am trying to find out which one of these is a bad thing. Please enlighten me!

I think many here have misinterpreted the use of the term "muckracker" in the CNN article posted above. It was used as a noun. A muckraker is someone who seeks out and reveals wrongdoing usually directed toward public officials or corporations. In describing CS as the "Texas muckracker" I think the writer may clearly be referring to CS suit against the replica industry and charges against the replica industry for "counterfeiting" his car. Nothing more.

As Turk points out many here make the guy a villian simply because he is still seeking to make a profit on his name and using it to advantage in an industry he knows and excels at. So what? Who here doesn't seek to make a profit in what they do?

How many of CC member can claim more philanthropic efforts than CS?

I don't know what Shelby loves but if all he loves is money and himself (assuming that includes his family too) how many of you are that much different?

More unabashed CS bashing.

Ridiculous.

I believe Ford sought out Shelby for the new Cobra...not the other way around.

Ford wants to use his name as bad as he does, and dont we all love money in this Country? I never thought the guy was Ghandi.
At least someone is pushing the envelope, if nobody did life would be boring.

If people would stand in line to give me money to sign my name or give me lucrative contracts to put my name on their products(as long as they were decent) you guys would not be able to turn around and not see BILLINGS in front of your face somewhere(including chilli cans).
I have no problem with someone taking advantage of capitalism, more power to 'em. And if you can make enough to do some good with a large portion of it,even better.

The only thing that has ever bothered me about the guy is when our vehicles went from......A flattering copy of a silly little car...to...some sort of abomination. I don't like Flip Flopping!

Have a good one,
Dan

No, dude, you're the one who has misinterpreted things. From what I've read, you do that quite often. And you also used a term which doesn't apply to you; you said "I think" which doesn't exactly fit. Muckraker - the Pilgrims Progress definition - is the correct one in this case.

There's nothing wrong with making money. There's a whole lot wrong with the way CS does things. The industry that Shelby wants to play at the fringes of usually ends up doing their best to disassociate themselves from him. Look at his involvement with the Viper.

Further, most people here who have given to any charity can and have done more philanthropically than Shelby has. There was a point a few years ago where the Make A Wish foundation had managed to grant 18,000,000 wishes with 7 million dollars ... during that same period the CS Childrens Heart Foundation had managed to help 7 children with 18,000,000 dollars. There's a whole lot of questionable overhead in the CS charities, always has been. Filtering crap with no legitimate value through a charity and taking the tax write off doesn't make you philanthropic, it simply shows that you probably own the charity. Duh.

I said that Shelby loves money and Shelby, and that's all. And that's what I meant. You really shouldn't assume things.

Your pal,
Meat.

Ahhh straight from the "Respect Respect Respect!" thread are we? I could tell.

Obviously, the CNN piece was fluff- a press release with the term muckraker added to it as a term of endearment added by an editor that probably had no knowledge of CS or Cobras. I for one wouldn't use the quote to back up an opinion about Shelby either pro or con.

The all knowing all seeing Meat. Well "Dude" I guess you have personally spoken to the writer and know for sure in which way he intended the term.

I read it the way I read it. You read it the way you read it. Maybe you're right. Who knows. I'm not in the writers head.

I know that there have been some questions concerning some of his business dealings in the past i.e. the original chaiss continuation series cars and perhaps justified.

No one said he was Mother Theresa.

The fact that he established a heart foundation is a good thing. No? The fact that it may have helped even one child obtain a new heart is a good thing. You can question the way the charity is run all you want. Maybe your right. Maybe you're not. I don't know.

Point is he has clearly done good things too. He clearly is responsible for creating the Shelby Cobra and the legend that sprang from it. He clearly is human. He clearly is not perfect. Who here is?

The fact that he may love "Shelby" and love money doesn't villify him in my book.

Your contempt and hatred for the man drip from your posts. Why? Because he sued the replica industry?

You really need to let go of all that hatred. Its not healthy.

Despite all efforts by some to tear the man down here he is and will always be an American automotive icon.

Your pal.

Real 1

P.S. I think therefore I am.

This thread has me so mad that I can't even read through all the posts before hitting "reply", so forgive me if this has already been said....I second it if that's the case.

Some of you guys amaze me. Making money, and then making more money, and then making even more money is the American way. God Forbid that Shelby does what he does best and ends up making more money. The fact that some of you guys have the testicular fortitude to insult him for doing this amazes me. Obviously, some of you jokers have done pretty well for yourselves since I see you own Cobras and GT-40's. Maybe some of you "muckracked" your way into the driver's seat.

Biting the hand that fed you, as far as I am concerned.

Russ
