Look at those side vents in the "NO. 29" photo above. I always thought those were exclusive to the Cobra, not copied from the Bristol. Learn something new everyday......
I've ate White Castle burgers plenty as a kid, especially on a family vacation. We always managed to "run over a skunk" just after stopping there, or at least that's what my Pop said.

Johan - well spotted. those side vents were part of the "hasty preparations" of No 29 for Le Mans. And they did indeed pre-date the Cobra.
Super-Snake - we aim to please. Now can we Brits please have the visa-waiver scheme back? I kinda like visiting the 'states.

Wilf: I agree with you. The Ace obviously had the "right stuff" otherwise it wouldn't have been picked by CS for the creation of the Cobra.
Seems the consensus here is that CS came first then the Cobra came after. Seems like the Definitive Time Line may need some editing.

We already know that Shelby named it the Cobra. The point was that Mr. Shelby was apart of the evolution of the AC Cobra, not the evolution. It is no different then the new Cobra, it has VERY LITTLE input from Shelby.
Just because Mr. Shelby contacted Ford and AC to mate the two together doesn't make him the all mighty creator. I guess if a Honda designer recommends a Mercedes engine to go into the next S2000, that it should be named after him and it's the Ted Johnson S2000 instead of a Honda S2000.
It is obvious that a HUGE part of the car they call "Cobra", existed before Mr. Shelby...
DEAL WITH IT!
I guess he was the first person (to recommend) to ever put a V8 in a small Car.

Actually, the basic shape of the Cobra came first (ala: AC Ace), then Shelby (with some assistance from Dean Moon & Co) decided to install a SBF engine in the chassis of the AC Ace............The name for this creation is most certainly a Shelby decision........

Bandit, Bill, you guys are plumb wrong!
Notwithstanding my assertation that the Ace was successful in it's own right before CS, the Cobra (i.e. Ace + Ford sb) was significantly developed by CS and his team. Did you know for example, that the Ace had only ONE cross member between the 3" chassis tubes originally?
All running gear had to be developed/uprated to deal with the output of the Ford engine, which was SO much more than our poor Brit engine efforts.
Nope - the Cobra was more than just AC Ace + Ford SB- and it was CS that forced that development. And just who exactly had the idea to do it in the first place? It may not have been the first small car + V8, but it WAS the first Cobra. How many Allards do you see replicated these days?
The fact that the NEW Cobra concept has had, in truth, little input from CS is just not relevant here.
As I said elsewhere -I don't lay down and dribble at the mere thought of CS, but credit where credit is due.

First off, when is the last time you looked at an original AC Ace of that time period? Second, of course they had to make adjustments to the frame to accomidate the V8 engine, that is not in question. What is in question is the basic body shape (aka: from the original trade dress lawsuit). I've helped people install SBF engines in TR6's, and yes, that too was not a bolt in affair, as it required the addition of crossmembers to accomidate the engine and transmission.

Bill S - the date was Nov 11th 2003, and I spent several hours looking at not one, but three AC cars from the late '50s and up. Crawled all over and under them. Pic attached - just one of many I took at the time. These cars were being exhibited by the AC owners club at the UK Classic Car show, we had a long and interesting discussion about AC, Shelby, and the world in general. They were nice folks.
Currently aiding a good friend restore a TR6, knowing that bodyshell I tremble at the thought of trying to transmit sb torque through it. I guess that's how CS felt as well.

I don't think anyone on this forum is not giving Mr. Shelby a HUGE amount of the credit for the Cobra, People like Evan just want to give him almost ALL of the credit...
We are all aware that the 427 Cobra was almost a totally new vehicle after the FORD and Shelby engineers (along with some input from Mr. Shelby) redesigned it.
