Default raised white tires

I just put a set of Goodyear Eagle GTII on my SPF. Boy what a difference. The car is Guardsman/white stripe and the raised white tires really help the looks from my previous blackwalls. I understand it is personal preference. It seems about 50/50 of what i've seen on cars between raised whites and blackwalls.

The jury is still out with me on whether to mount raised white lettering on my car. To me. it can look like a rolling advertisement, especially the huge Goodyear letters on some tires on the street. I have always liked the smaller lettering on the old Polyglas tires from the 70's. Be that as it may, I recently put a new set of tires on my SPF blackwall up. Maybe my next set will be letters up??

Garu:
What brand were the old tires? Did you ever get steering wheel shake with them? Do you get any shake with the new Goodyears? What sizes did you put on?

Mine has Dunlops with the letters on the inside. When I come up to the point where they need a re-balance, I might get a wild hair and put the letters outside. I too am 50/50 on "the look".

It's a tough call on the raised whites.I think it all depends on the colors of the other details on the car-some cars look outstanding with them, especially if they have white stripes. At only 13 feet long,it doesn't take too much to overwhelm the car and make it look a little busy IMHO.

I have the white letters out on my SPF mainly because that's the way the car was delivered. I agree with your ambivalence. If I had done it myself it would have been black out. My tires are Goodrich TAs. By the way, the lettering is a bit yellow after a season, what is the best way to clean them?

Jack, when I had a musclecar (70 Z-28), I used to use a stiff nylon bristle brush and "Soft Scrub" (non-bleach formula). Wet the tire, put a little SS right on the brush and work it in. It also removes road grime off the rest of the tire. Now I don't know the effect of this stuff on a polished Trigo rim, so tred softly (it's an abrasive)! Heck, even a little spray of 409 or Simple Green with the same brush ought to do it.

Some "whitewalls" are whiter than others. I know, I was a Rubber Chemist for Armstrong Tires for a lot of years. Depending on how much zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, anti-ozonants and anti-oxidants it contains the white can be bright or off-white. BFG is not known for the money they put into whitewall rubber.

409 does a nice job bringing out whatever white is available. Use white chalk if you want to really get a bright white.

I went with SPF specs. front:255/60R15

rear: 275/60R15

It does depend on the color of the car. My raised whites really look good with the white stripes on the car. The car just seems to more eye-catching now.

Its to each his own I think,,but my opinion is ,vintage style letters look great, otherwise black walls by far,I think most cobras are way over detailed, there like harleys, understated is best,,
like I said,thats my opnion,but we all have them,,Tim

A question earlier in the thread was about wobble with Goodyears....I have yellow letter goodyears and yes they can wobble. When I was running 18 lbs....and it got cold....I really had a problem. Next spring went to 26 lbs and rarely do I get a wobble. I have heard from many that Goodyears sometimes can not be as true as other tires.

BTW - does anyone know if you can still get YELLOW letter GYs? They look sweat on my yellow/black car.

Jeff
