Since we're all sharing: light bead blast .125 aluminum and anodized black for a trick no-glare finish. Finish courtesy of Dave Beile.
Dave, I really like the carbon fiber idea. I think it will be a cool touch. Wish I thought of that.

I made mine out of 3/4 mahogany and stained it the same color as my stearing wheel. Look in my photos.

Hey jamvan,
It isn't the gauge. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you should have an 18 gallon GM fuel tank in your car. It is also mounted on a bit of a slope toward the back. If all of this is true, it is the position of the sending unit in the tank that won't allow it to read full.
It was that way in my car too....even though mine was a Contemporary. I think they are pretty close in that department.
Let me know if I'm right.
As to dash cover, I did mine like original with no padding. (see gallery picture "details"}

The glare has never been a problem. I drove around for a week with a piece of stainless propped aganist the dash just to make sure before I made it

Jim: My fuel gauge reads about 1/4 when it is full and 5/8 when it is empty?! I'm pretty sure it is the sending unit. When I replace the puny 14 gallon fuel tank with a larger fuel cell (and sending unit matched to the Smiths gauge), I expect more accurate results. By the way, guys, while my dash also has no padding, I just thought minimal padding might make it more user friendly without making it look funky. Rich

Great post with some great photos. What are the benefits or negatives of using padding behind the dash covering and any suggestions for a backer material (aluminum, plywood, hardboard,....)?

Black leather, no padding....
Although I think budman is right about Vinyl being original..
As for Contemporary and Smith fuel senders ...they are incompatable .....they require a resistor at the gauge to get them speaking.......and aparently it is a short life for that resistor,..I have yet to speak with a Contemporary owner whose fuel gauge works correctly......
