392 stroker timing
Does anyone know why ford tech recommends 30-32 degrees total advance for the 392 and recommends 36-38 degrees total advance for the 302? Most dynos seems to get max HP at about 36 and I would think that the 30-32 that ford recommends for the stroker is a little retarted, any input from you guys that know more than me???? We are talking about the crate 392 with the roller cam and svo alum heads 9.7:1 comp. WOuld appreciate some insight.

My 425ci Windsor liked 12 initial and 32 total.....have no idea why though.

Hi,
The static compression is a fixed piston/head volume ratio.
There is another factor to consider in timing an engine, that is the cranking compression. this has to do with cylinder pressure determined by the cam profile of valves opening and closing, overlap duration,etc. So the cam profile has alot to do with how much total timing your engine will tolerate.

My 408 windsor thrives on 20 initial and 34 total, all in by 3000.
The high initial is to compensate for the lack of vac advance, gives better running at light throttle openings, proved on the dyno.
No starter kick-back problems either - go figure.

In virtually every car or motor magazine i have read in the past few years, the Windsor motors the pro's build is run at 32 total. It is often mentioned that Chevy motors use a bit more.
I had my 396 ci windsor on a chassis dyno, and the operator ran it several times with different advances, it made the best power at 32 total, vacuum disabled.
When i ran inadvertently 36 total, i had some preignition.
I think the right advance is the right advance. I was tempted to run race gas at the track, and add a few degrees, but read about a test motor upon they did this, it made a bit less power.
So i set and keep mine at 32 total. It is not all in until nearly 4000 rpm, mechanical advance, and i intend to keep it there.
32 seems to a pretty universal Ford thing for Windsor motors.

wow, I am at 36 degrees...I need to back it off and re set idle mixture and idle. I had always thought you wanted all the advance you could get without getting detonation. I guess that a rule of thumb if you cant get a dyno? We just got a Dyno in Fort smith and I plan on visiting them when time allows. I will set timing at 32 degrees and see if it runs better or worse than 36 "seat of the pants" for now. I love this forum, so many good ideas!
