Was CSX 2104 for sale? If so, what did it go for?

James... I'm guessing it was this "Birthday" car....

This is a unique and exceptional collectable quality vehicle. This is the only Shelby 80th Birthday Phantom Cobra built. Presented at the 2003 special Barrett-Jackson 80th Birthday Party for Carroll Shelby. This Cobra was on the Victory Tour 2003 around the country to celebrate Carroll Shelby's 80th birthday. Exhibited in shows at: Amelia Island, 12 Hours of Sebring, Lowes Speedway, New York International Auto Show, National SAAC, Ford Centennial, Mid America Ford-Shelby Meet, Monterey Historic Races, and the Denver Grand Prix. Also featured in an exclusive 3 page article by Auto Week. The body, engine block and heads are all aluminum. Motor is a 427 C.I. and rated at 550hp - Dual Quad carburetors. Lenny Kravitz drove it in Nashville, TN. A portion of the sale proceeds will be donated to the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation. A special 80th Birthday Plaque has been autographed by Carroll Shelby as #1 Phantom and comes with the car as does all the trophies it has won this past year. There will never be another #1 Red 80th Birthday Shelby Phantom Cobra. Registered in the Shelby World Registry as Carroll Shelby's 80th Birthday Cobra. A Cobra is painted into each front fender. Carroll's signature is on the nose of the hood and is clear coated into the finish. The dash is also autographed by Carroll Shelby. This is a concourse pedigree. A solid investment, sure to appreciate.

Some of the Shelbyshine must be wearing off the "concourse" pedigree.......The commentators were struggling to say anything nice . uttering backhanded compliments and eventually dumping the 4000 's in the same bin with the "ugh" replicas.

ahhh --- the thought of the Kirkham I'm picking up IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS seems all the sweeter when I watch all the B-J hype over names and autographs and pedigree and drinking wine with your pinky extended. To heck with all that noise -- buy the car and build it, build the car to drive it, drive the car and enjoy it, leave the car to your kids in your will.

Karl,
What did they say about the black Cobra that sold for $105,000? I thought I heard them make the distinction that it was "continuation" or something like that.

They did not say anything I would have considered dumping the car in any bin.
If anything they stopped photographing the car at $70,000 mark and only added (away from the view) that it sold for $105,000

I also heard them comment that it was the most copied replicated car.
It says a lot about our tastes in having bought the most popular car. Cobras, replicas, Alloys, glass, originals, continuation or anything that even LOOKS like a Cobra rules!!!

The numbers that I posted were directly from the BJ sale sheet. The last CSX high bid was obscured as the auction ended and I was also confused on where they got those numbers until I realized that they included the 8% buyers fee. If you go to the BJ Auction site and click on "results" then on "Shelby" you can view the hammer prices on all of the sales over the past couple of years. The car that supposedly sold for $145k (actually $133.4k) was the blue CSX. The birthday car hasn't come across the block yet.

My understanding was that CSX 2104 was only on display by a company that does restorations and was showing their work. Anyone know any differently? A worm and sector car.

Teh really early 260-(289?) cars did not have rack and pinion steering.

Before rack and pinion virtually ALL cars had the old standard, worm and sector.

Dan: You can't deduct the BJ commission from the price. The price paid for the car is the price paid. The fact that 8% comes off the sale price for BJ is of no moment. Thats what the car sold for. Perid. Who gets what from the proceeds matters none.

KobraKarl: Your "spin" on the annoucers comments on the Shelby items is exactly the opposite of what they were saying. In fact when the GT350SR was being sold they commented on the fact that it was a genuine Shelby remanufactured by him and under his auspices and that while it was a "replica" in one sense it was a REAL Shelby GT350. They even commented on the fact that if Monet' painted more than one of a painting while the first would be the original the rest would be real Monets' just replicas of his previous painting. The clearly recognized the value of the fact the car was a genuine Shelby albeit not one of his originals.

Their comments about the GT350SR and the CSX4000 at the end clearly recognized the genuineness of the Shelby and the provenance of the cars although they clearly pointed out they were not from his original series of cars. Proof of the value of the pedigree is in the numbers. Every CSX sold for over $100K with the run of the mill aluminum Blue w/stripe CSX selling for $145K while the Contemporary, a very nice car, probably didn't bring half its origianl purchase price.
