Rear View Mirrors - Anything Better

Thanks for the idea on the pillar mount. At this time, I already have a driver's side fender mount Replica Talbot Jr flat lense with a 3.5" mirror (read WORTHLESS).

So, last evening, while thumbing thru the new book that arrived "The BIG Guide to Cobra Kits and Parts" (600+ Pages) I stumbled across the Cobra Restorers Ltd. catalog listings. Therein, they list, a new product. A 4.25" Talbot Senior fender mount mirror with CONVEX lens. The part number is GT800.

So, in the spirt of "Fung Shway" and trying not to adorn the ERA with any more mirrors than I have to, I figure on taking off the small talbot and replacing it with the larger Convex talbot for starters. Then, I can perhaps find a small stick on convex lens, in the right size, for the current 2.5" x 6" typical center dash rear view mirror.

I will call Cobra Restorers Tomorrow and check that out. I wonder if Finish Line can get that part for me? I would rather get that from Enzo as he is a sponser here on Club CObra and I am not sure if Cobra Restorers is??

I would think the large round convex that Pep Boys, etc. sell would fit in a large Talbot. In fact, I think there are Talbot convex models.

I too am not totally satisfied with my "correct" mirrors; they do an adequate job only, although they do look good. But I also do agree with Real 1: you need to turn and look just to make sure. Since I have no top, all it takes is a quick glance, so it's no biggie. As a teenager I used mirrors only until I discovered what is called a blind spot. After almost turning into some civilian, I quickly got into the habit of looking before turning and using directional signals, which also helps warn other drivers, although most people seem seem to have some avoidance to using them.

I found that the Butler has such full rear fenders, that I had to put small "additions" under each mirror (two fender mounts and one dash mount). I have now "tuned" them so that the starboard and centerline mirrors give a terrific view aft. You might want to play with the port mirror---I never use mine! M'always in the left lane anyway!

Agree with you there Freddie. I used the raydot on the centre mount and it works well.

The drivers side door mirror does give a good view of the rear fender but with a slight outward adjustment I pick up a good view down the side of the Cobra into the next overtaking lane.

Just found a mirror bracket that mounts on the side of the windscreen frame - an alternative. My camera shows the mirror positions.

It helps get around the fender bulge if you adjust your side mirrors outward to show the lane beside you, which is how they're supposed to be anyway.

I adjust mine so that I have to lean way over to see the side of my own vehicle. That way I can see a vehicle beside me either in the mirror or in my peripheral vision.

The center mirror is to see what's behind you.

This is what I use. 4" PEEP mirror from Speedway. Its grabs the windshield frame with 2 setscrews and is fully adjustable.

I decided to order one which I recieved 2-13-04. Great quality , clip it on and adds about 50% more width vision in the flat version and even more in the slight convex version.

A great easy to use/remove mirror for times of wanting more rear / side vision. thanks for the lead. Bill.

Thanks for beeing the test subject. From the description it looked like it would be viable but it's nice to know someone acturally used one.
Looks like I'll have to put one in the box of "add-ons" for when my ship comes in.

Here's a picture of a cheapy suction-cup mounted convex mirror I picked up at AutoZone similar to the one described by Chaplin. It gives a panoramic rear view at a glance. To keep it from falling off, I use WD-40 or petroleum jelly. To give the car its original look with the ineffective center and fender-mounted mirrors, I just pop off the mirror and replace it later.

Pat gave us permission to plagiarize his post brackets. You have to check what threads and angles the screws are at as there are two types I've seen.

mirror mounts are made out of stainless.

if you have a hole in your fender make a stainless badge to cover it.





another way is to use a small piece of aluminum, bend it and use 10/32 T-nuts to mount it to the windshield frame

Your right both mirrors are useless even more so with top on the car.Made a 2" extension for the rear view took care of that problem and it looks great.The fender mirror still up in the air with how to take care of that but intend to.Getting more used to Dwight's fix may go that way.

I have replaced the glass in the fender mirror with part store bought convex pieces. I take the mirror apart and replace the glass (polished metal) with a part store bought 3 3/4" convex piece. You can stick them on with double back tape.
It may not be a good as modern mirrors but it works a lot better.

Speedway sells mirrors for oval track car they may work on a Cobra.

Some Cobras like the E-M, the dash is lower than the trunk (or the trunk is higher) so the stock mirror is to low. When you look into the mirror, on the bottom half you see the bulkhead of the car. You can raise the mirror 2" with a piece of aluminum that matches the size of the mirror base. Looks good and does not stand out.

Mirrors are a problem on a 60's English made car!

I found mirrors with suction cups that are convex and about 2 inches in diameter at a local auto parts store (they had to order them). I mount one in each upper corner of the windshield and use these in place of side mirrors. I removed my side mirrors and plugged the hole with chrome plated bolt.

I also found a blue tinted curved mirror about 2 inches by 10 inches that clips on my rear view mirror.

All these are removable for a show, and work great on the road.

Best of both worlds.
