California Registration / Smog Question
I am considering purchasing an FF registered as a 65 in Oregon. Will this require the SB502 (or whatever it is) for Califonria as well or can it be brought in as a "Federal" car? Also, isn't there something coming up in March that will force a 40-year backdate so that everything registered as a 65 and later must comply with the smog laws applicable to year of the motor?
Thanks in advance for your collective thoughts!!!!

Don't know whats up & coming but year of the engine was the way we registered a few years back. SB100 is the way we do it now. There are 500 numbers given out every year & I believe there is a one time check for general smog issues. The number you are issued is a number for that year but is exempt from current smog regulations. Guys, correct me if I got something wrong

Better get here soon. As of yesterday 340 of 500 allocated slots for smog exemption to the body style of the vehicle are gone for 2004... Follow this link for an update and or questions.

If the car is already registered in another state, it should be able to be registered here in California as a used car, right? Smog certifications stop when the car is 30 years old, i think.

A few guys from BACC bought cobras from out of state that were reged as 65s....DMV new they were replicas and had them go through sb100. One even brought his into state after the SB #s were gone so they gave him a temp to drive until the 1st of this year rolled around.

Don't shoot the messenger, but I think it's 382 of 400, not 500 that are gone. There was another thread about how the DMV has reserved the 400 to 500 block for those from whom the DMV have yanked their titles.
YMMV,

I just went through the process, I bought a car with a Texas title, listing the car as a 1967 Ford. You take the car and title to the DMV. Drive to the inspection station outside the office. The inspector will verify the vin number and at that time they will inform you it is a kit car and will be called a Specially Constructed vehicle (SPCNS). Take that paperwork, Park the car, remove the license and go inside and pay all fees, you will receive a 90 day red sticker so you can drive the car. Prior to going to the DMV go to the DMV web site and print out everything about SB100. Very few employees get to do the SB 100 paperwork and you might have to be armed with the correct information. After you pay your fees ask to be assigned a SB100 sequence number, The employee will have to make a telephone call to obtain the number. Do not leave without the number. After you get the number wait about one week to get the sequence number form from DMV. Call and make an appointment with the BAR for the smog check. You will not pass or fail the smog test and it is free. They will place a sticker on the firewall and the car will never again be inspected for smog. Take that paperwork back to the DMV and they will issue you the plates. If you do not register the car using SB100 then smog the car to the year of the engine, meeting the standards of the engine year and smog the car every two years. Be smart, get moving now and get your sequence number and use SB100 before the numbers are gone for the year. This information only applies to cars with an out of state title.

white rose,
If a car is from out of state, do you not have to also get the CHP to check the car? Maybe not if it is already registered somewhere else. I am just curious. Also, at one time I was told out of state cars had to have at least 7500 miles on them. Does this still apply or is that before SB100? Still curious!

Normally for an out of state car I do not think you have to go to the CHP, I do not know about the 7500 mile deal. My car had over 9500 miles when I registered it. Other than the wait at DMV for the sequence number on Jan. 2nd the process went fast.
