I'll weigh in on the cost of "doing it right" as the original owner attempted to do.
I had over 80K in my Contemporary and I did a lot of the minor work myself. Getting over 100K into one is not hard to do if the goal is to get near original specs. Note that my serial number is only 48 cars newer than this one.
The only thing I can find fault with is those damned stainless bumpers and over riders that Contemporary sold. The shape is wrong and the stainless just doesn't cut it for appearance. Being the "purist snob" that I am, I went to Ron Butler and got perfect reproductions of the originals. (see gallery)
Should add that those "gennie Halibrands" are about $800 each without tires.
I got a little bit of a red face when I read the very prosey description. While I didn't get quite as carried away, I wrote a long winded one too. In my case, it did help sell the car.
Now the price? That's a hell of a buy for somebody! Those of you who read this and are looking for your first Cobra or even an upgrade, I'd say jump all over it. You couldn't begin to build this car for that amount of money......just get rid of those junky bumpers!
Al

It never ceases to amaze me as to how much people have wrapped up in their Cobra's that they will never see back.

Steve,
Why be surprised. Every car and truck I sell is ultimately costs more than the customer will ever see back. Hell, at least the Cobras are more fun than Cavaliers. Besides they probably bring back a higher percentage of their original cost than anything else out there, other than some collectibles.
Let them enjoy it. If they don't spend it on their Cobras they will probably waste it on some silly vacation or furniture and stuff.

Well I never got any money back from my vacations OR my furniture.
But like the Cobra at least vacations leave me with fond memories and new friends!

Gawd, my teeth hurt from all that sugar coating. I don't believe those are the "Original Style" rocks in the tires.

......suger coating is right, Slow Dog. I'm going to brush my teeth now.
He sure is the "salesman". VERY nice car, though. We'll have to wait and see what it goes for.
I wonder how much this guy "took" the poor old lady that lost her husband for, when he bought the car from her? Hope she had an idea of what it was worth before letting it go to this guy.

There was a Contemporary that sold at the Barrett Jackson auction a couple weeks ago for some un-godly low price. I think it was like twenty five grand or something. It "only" had a 428 in it, and had the street Cobra undercar exhaust, but compared to the cost of most other Contemporary cars and what that gentleman paid to have his, I was stunned. Anyone else see that car? For those of you Contemporary owners who know the cars well, how sweet a deal did the guy at the auction get?
just curious.

MT,
A little hard to say ,not having seen it up close ..I would guess conservatively $ 7,000......not many were fitted in roadster trim , I have seen a similarly fitted ERA also sell well under market.
Your taste in Cobra set up may save you a few thou.
I dont think the BJ auction is the best place to sell a replica.....A GT40 or two also went a little low.

Theres a new (to the Islands) Contemporary here. 428 and Webers. Incredibly nice car throughout. Really raised my opinion of Contemporary. Owner says his is a 100K car and I believe it! Lots of "little" details, the car IS "right" (blue white stripe by the way).
I GOT to have a stripe so the one on E-Bay doesn't do it for me. But man, it's gotta be a nice car! With the right price, what the heck, get a stripe painted!

Looks like a really nice car. It'll be interesting to see what it goes for.
Anyone else here had experience buying or selling a car on ebay?
How did it go?

At that price and the way it looks, if it is mechanically sound, that is one great buy--no not a real one but a close clone with the details right.
But so far the reserve is not yet met--goes any higher and it's not met---may not be such a deal IMO

Nice car. I don't see how you get over $100K in a Contemporary even trying to do it right. I'm not saying he didn't, but how? A killer ERA in those days fitted to the "T" with all the right stuff would run you $65K to $70K..Turn key. Maybe he is including the cost of "re doing the engine" as he mentioned.
Even at the height when glass CSX's first came out you could get a "killer" glass CSX for $100K. How do you get there with a Contemporary which started out $20K less from baseline?
I agree. For $40K its a real nice car and a decent buy.

Evan,
If you had ever built a hot rod, or restored a "Classic" you would know ....it can be done .....easily!..
You could drop 20k in just the rear suspension..
When you start down the slippery road of chrome and polish...yeeowch
Of course when you sell, you get slaughtered...

REAl 1? "decent buy" come on you can't be real - or are you just being fake? At 40K it's one heck of a buy based on the pictures alone. I've seen Cobra's for sale that don't even touch that much less the drivetrain in that $$$ ballpark.
