Hey, Luke,

Nice Garage!! NICE CAR!!! Great story!

Yep: they're gorgeous cars!!! And yep: I'd yank the sound system, too. You've already got a big woofer on each side!

I had to wait from the beginning of January until mid-March for the first real ride in my car. Every now and then, when the roads were dry and the temps in the high 30's-low 40's, I'd sneak it out for five minutes or so on the road in front of the storage garage where I kept it last winter, but with no plates I figured it would be a real cop magnet. Meantime I'd just go visit it every few days or so and sit in it and go, "RRRRRRRMM RRRRMMMMMM"! It was so exciting to just look at it and sit in it but even more so to put the plates on and be able to drive it anytime and anywhere I wanted!

Congratulations!

Lowell

Your garage looks better than the rooms in most people's houses. Your car looks like a museum piece. I am impressed. Congradulations.

Paul - here is the story...the car came into my possession through a DEA auction - I stumbled onto the auction with 3 hours left in the bidding - I was "high" bidder in the closed bid auction by $150.00, so I didn't leave much money on the table! (It was even "DEA guaranteed" to be drug free!).

The downside to this whole deal was I didn't get to enjoy the step-by-step build I had been planning on, so I can't speak for all the details such as motor innards, etc - the upside was I got it for what I think was a very good price. Upon closing the sale, I took the car straight to ERA. ERA of course knew the car - Doug and Richie checked it out, custom fitted the turkey pan and missing heat deflectors, and pronounced it A-1. Peter P's comment was all it needed was "someone to love it" - it was a bit grimy from sitting for a year, but will polish up just fine.

It is an '01 build with 2000 miles on the odometer, 428, toploader, and various nice-touch options such as leather seats, MSD, the chrome add-ons such as bumpers/overriders/rollbar, coated exhaust, car cover, etc. It also came with a killer sound system, which I will remove shortly...

So all in all, bring on the springtime!

Whoa!! I first read that to say you were high bidder at $150.00!! I was thinking, "You bastage!! " I figured it out after wondering why no one else was excited. Heh. Nice find and beautiful car!

R - for those who were wondering - because I have had private emails about this too - there is no such thing as a "steal" in these legendary DEA auctions...the DEA establishes a predetermined "value" for the asset - in this case, after having ERA check the car out and know knowing exactly what it is (phew....was I crazy to internet bid sight unseen or what....) - we estimate it at 25-30% below retail price...

If the high bidder is below the DEA minimum number (which I was by a $1000 or so), they will offer to the high bidder (me in this case) the "option" to purchase the asset at their pre-established minimum. If the high bidder does not accept this offer, then the asset goes back into another auction pool........I accepted their proposal....in about 3 seconds...actually about 1 second....

(the phone call one hour after the bids closed)...."Mr. Luke...we have bad news.... and good news...the bad news is - your bid was below the minimum,.... the good news is...you are the high bidder" ......

The $150.00 was the amount I was over the second place bidder - only the hi bidder gets this option....so, I left about $150.00 on the table, so to speak....

The legendary $500.00 Lamborghini's etc are nothing more than urban myths...but...these auctions can absolutely be great deals ......a 99 BMW 325 went for $11K at the same auction as my car for example....

So, now I sit - A Cobra "virgin" driver, who can't wait for spring.....cheers
