best wax
What is the best wax to use on a dark blue car?
|
Zaino or Pinnacle Souveran. Both available via mail/Internet. Both expensive and well worth it (especially for darker colored cars). Zaino is more "polish" than wax, but has outstanding reflective qualities, goes on/off easy and requires multiple coats for increased performance and gloss. I haven't used Pinnacle personally (yet), but my buddies on the corvette forums swear by the stuff for getting the deepest color out of dark paint.

Ditto on the Zaino products. They'll even make an average paint job look good.
Reflective quality on dark metallics is awesome. http://www.zainostore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc |

Intersting thread as my next cobra is going to be black (i.e. probably a lot of work once intending to keep it nice)
Heard a lot of very good things about Teflon polishes as a sort of universal polish/wax substitue. Has anyone used such a product? Was it matching up to the expectations? Carsten |
Any favorable/unfavorable comments on the Griot's Garage cleaners, waxes, etc.?

My Vote would have to go with the Zaino Brothers' Products.
They are not a true wax but frankly they cannot be beat. I use them on my daily drivers as well as the Cobra and all my previous weekend drivers. I especially like their tire dressing product. Dark, lustrous and dry. Makes tires look like new. My ERA is a very dark blue with fine metalflake. Tip... if you ever get a tiny rock chip in the front of the dark blue car and you are wondering what to do to hide the chip here is a trick I learned at a recent car show. Get a blue permanent magic marker, preferably the type with a thin point Sharpie brand. If you gently use the Sharpie on the tiny chip it will dye the undercoat blue. The chip will essentially be invisible. A dab of clearcoat nail polish on the tip of a toothpick can then be used to fill in the surface. A few days later if you use Zaino swirl remover polish on that area, your result will be essentially a totally hidden chip. |
Use the Z!
When you ask for the "best", you're obviously asking for people's opinions. I have little knowledge, but a whole lot of opinions. LOL
I've been polishing/waxing cars for 35 years. In fact, I am a comfirmed WAXER of the highest order. Wax on...wax off, a Zen experience. There are several good products out there, but, in my experience, none compare to Zaino. I started using Zaino products last summer when I got my SPF, will never use anything else again. One qualification...... If you use Zaino products remember, they are a system. For best (awesome) results (see my gallery for a dark blue car), they should be used together as recommended by Zaino. Make sure you remove all existing wax (easily done) and "clay" the finish BEFORE you start using the Zaino products. As you add "layers", the shine just keeps gettin' deeper and deeper. |
Strange that Cranky hasn't given his recommendation on this topic yet.

Zaino
Crappy clearcoat job new in 1999.
Find Zaino in 2000. alkaline wash, claybar, 1 lock coat, 15 coats of #5, 20+ coats of #2, 2 bottles of Gloss Enhancer: Best Paint 2001 (won 50 gallons of Bear House Paint!!) 2-5 coats of #2 during the driving season with frequent applications of Gloss Enhancer. 2004: 1 lock coat, 5 coats #5, and now working on 15 - 20 coats of #2. Sure beat the $2000 I was looking at for a clearcoat re-do. Amazing stuff..... Zderf :3DSMILE: |
Believe me, I've used 'em all, from Turtle Wax, Blue Coral, Simonize, Armor All wax, Griots Best of Show, Mothers et al, Maguires et al. The only polishes I use now are Zymol and Zaino. Zymol seems to work the best in removing minor swirls and scratches on my Indigo Blue SPF. I like to use Zymol because you don't have to wait for it to dry before removing it. Which is good when you're polishing your car in the garage and it's 40 degrees outside and the humid rainy weather does not allow the polish to dry to a dust. Wiping it off wet and polishing the paint leaves no dust behind either. Once you top off the Zymol with a coat of Zaino you have in my opinion, the best wax job around. The Zymol polish is really good stuff and with a follow up of Zaino it's like liquid on the paint. I have the entire Zaino system, but I have only used the Zaino #2 as a final polishing so far.

Yep, That's a Problem....
Zoom.....
Yeah, that's one drawback about Zaino, it HAS to dry. When it's humid or the temp drops below 65 F, it won't dry. It just sits there. A real bummer for a confirmed Waxer like me. No winter waxing! Other than that, it's great stuff. |
I have always used Mothers and you never let it dry. Put on in about 1 foot square and get it right off. Did you ever spit polish a shoe? Sort of the same principle. No mater the color of the car ir never seems to fail me.
|
It took me a long time learn that Mothers should be removed wet. The instructions say to let it dry but I save my arm and enjoy a nice carnuba wax when it's taken off before it's dry. Otherwise it's similar to removing bondo.
How well does Zaino work on non-painted gel goat cars? |
One thing I did not mention about the Zaino is that it does need to thoroughly dry before buffing off. However, the polish does not require any rubbing at all when applying and the instructions do say to apply it as thin as possible. And they mean as thin as possible. In warm weather you can polish your car using Zaino start to finish in 30-40 minutes! Leaves hardly ANY dust and wipes off very fast, since it was put on extremely thin.
