We always referred to the iron trans as an "FMX."

Default Edley

An "FMX" and an "MX" are different animals...similar but different.

I have never heard of an "MX" transmission. Can you give me a "Reader's Digest" history of the MX?

I rember selling parts for the fmx and mx,there were referred to bu ford as the cruiseamatics,,they were simular in design asi remember, most parts were the same, but the fmx was a late rupdate with improved valve body and band design,,lots of the mx part numbers dated back to the 50's {B8ME} ect..leading to believe it was first a lincoln or merc trans,,these are vague recollections from my parts guy days,I could stand to be corrected,,
QUESTION,,in reference to the old mustang auto shifters,,any one know of a gate kit to allow manual shifting without over shift ? Tim

Wayne, I'm a little confussed.

I had spoken with Tom D'Antonio about this a few years ago, and he told me it was CSX3057 that was used. If you look at CSX3178, it is a "street car" that does not have rear wheel-well flares and it also has the non-recessed gas cap common to many street cars. The 4000 fiberglass cars are a perfect copy of an S/C, whereas 3178 had virtually no S/C feature.

I remember seeing 3178 when it was just a bare chassis and body. The oil cooler scoop was damaged, and the 1/8” body wrap wire was broken free of the chassis at the sidepipe openings. Clearly this car was in no condition to take a splash off of. Meanwhile, 3057 was fresh from Kimmons at about the same time the 4000 program was started.

Lightbulb MX..

..the MX series does date to the early 50's. The medium case was used in the 55-66 Thunderbirds as well as other Fords. The small case went behind 6 cylinders and small V8s in the full size Fords and Mercuries. The large case went into the Lincolns as well as the 59-60 T-Bird with the 430 option. Prior to 1961 no vacuum modulator, this was added in 61. All are 3 speeds (take that Powerglide..) and all were sold at one time under the Ford-O-Matic or Cruise-O-Matic name. Based on the Borg-Warner design licensed to Ford, so yes, it is a kin to the awsome Rambler "Flash-O-Matic" Didn't you just love the way in the 60's car manufacturers had to add "O-Matic" to everything?!?!
