Default Heidt IRS

Has any one used or bought Heidt's IRS suspension? If so how well does it perform to a 4 link live axel. Any feedback would be great. I am debating wether installing a 5 link live axel installed by Gordan levy or Heidt's IRS. Any input would be great.

Thanks
Sam

Default irs vs live

Sam,

Considerable difference in the ride of a IRS versus the 5 link. If someone runs the correct rear spring on the IRS that is.

COST is almost IDENTICAL.

Drag racing the car with slicks will usually select the 5 link for the axle durability, since most do not get the correct axles for IRS application.

So grumpy if I am not going to drag race the car. Should I stick to IRS. When I talked to Gordon Levey from Lev racing he said they use 5 link live axel in the factory five cars.

He siad he would not use IRS because of breakage problem and that the IRS is not as reliable as live axel. He also said that they use there 5 link in auto cross. But I am not sure how well it performs to the IRS from taking corner and the G factor.

nd4spd00,
The breakage he was eluding to was the $9.00 Heim joints that were supplied on the FFR cars up until recently. There's a reason that racing cars use a $42.00 Heim in lieu of the lesser.
Get in touch with Marty Cook at Raxles, he will build you a set of IRS axles for the 8.8 you will not tear up. Raxles has run them on a 3700# TBIRD drag racing without a failure, yet.

Default live AUTOX axle

nd4spd00,
There is a reason for using the FOX live axle with the 5 link or 3 link as the FFR guys call it, is very simple, PUMP UP THE SPRINGS to 800 lbs each, add a STIFF SWAY BAR and it will make the tires stick kinda like an IRS.
BUT, then hop in her and drive her home.
Get a good wad of chewing gum to help on the divets in the paving as you drive, cuz you will rattle the ole pearlies. Bet your wife (maybe girlfriend) won't ride with you?
You now have an AutoX car, but not a good daily driver.

The IRS should be better at handleing bumps in a corner. The IRS should also allow you to run some negative camber which should help ultimte cornering as well. The IRS with strong enough parts would be the way to go. I have seen some well set up live axle cars run well on a road course. To do the live axle right, you would have to go 3 link and eliminate the c clips, bearing carrier to the hubs. Good luck, Scott.
