I guess this is another scam deal.
I wonder why Ebay doesn't see it coming

Default sAD pART

This guy has other scams on cheaper cars that have bids. I hope no-one actually transfers any $$ to the seller.

Default CSX4$$$?

eBay Bidders,
Typical of these schemes, they start the bid out too high for most folks and then I couldn't qualify for the "pre-approval", since my entire 401C account couldn't cover it as a guarantee!
Oh well, nice car!

Now THAT'S a real chuckle. I'm confident that the new owner of CSX 4148 will enjoy the depreciation after just taking possession of his cobra on Monday!

He just received this message and the information has been forwarded as stated.
To Whom This May Concern,
I just sold this car to a gentleman in New York who took delivery this past Monday. Since you have listed this vehicle with fraudulent intent, I have forwarded the listing to the ebay administration and to the regional office of the FBI for internet fraud. I have provided the agent in charge a full disclosure of all of the information including copies of the title, registration and transfer of ownership.

Have a pleasant day.

Can we hear the rectal spasms?
Any bets on when the ad gets pulled? It's 2:58 PM Eastern Time right now!

Start the bid to high?

The current bid on what was Turks Cobra is $500. I don't know what this guys game is but ALL the cars he has for auction are the same deal.

24hr one day auction, APPARENTLY no reserve, no way I believe the guy would sell ANY of these cars below a certain amount. Yet no minimum is listed. If he doesn't sell the car isn't that a violation of E-Bay rules?

Then again,,,,, I'm starting to think e-bay itself is the problem! It's ridiculous for E-Bay to offer such an auction and have no intention of following through on it.

E-Bay,,,,, YOU are the one pissing me off!

Ern.. don't be so harsh on eBay. They are an auction facilitator...not an auction house, like Sotheby.

...have any idea how many listings a day they handle?

They never have pretended to scrutinize the validity of any listing...
...they react quickly, though, to reported fraud and bogus listings.

Ron,

True, but they advertise widely on TV and in the print media, about how safe it is to buy a car on e-Bay motors. They claim to offer guarantees, etc. If it is true, then that should mean that a poor smuck who wired money out-of-country to a scam artist would be reimbursed. If that is not the case, they should be heavily modifying their ad campaign or putting disclosures on their site, warning of the risks.

They have disclaimers to the ceiling.

And, frankly, only a dope would buy a car under the terms of these recent scams.

Yes, only a dope would, but they also push the guarantee thing. And what possible excuse do they have for allowing the "pre-authorized bidder" format? That's just a set-up to get contact info.

It's a mixed msg. from e-Bay, even if you're being generous and giving them the benefit of the doubt. I don't expect them to be able to clean up all instances of fraud. But, they could easily close the biggest loopholes.

From eBay's terms of agreement....that you agree to, by using the website...

eBay is a Venue.
3.1 eBay is not an Auctioneer. Although we are commonly referred to as an online auction web site, it is important to realize that we are not a traditional "auctioneer." Instead, the Site acts as a venue to allow anyone to offer, sell, and buy just about anything, at anytime, from anywhere, in a variety of pricing formats, including a fixed price format and an auction-style format commonly referred to as "online auctions" or "auctions." We are not involved in the actual transaction between buyers and sellers. As a result, we have no control over the quality, safety or legality of the items advertised, the truth or accuracy of the listings, the ability of sellers to sell items or the ability of buyers to pay for items. We cannot ensure that a buyer or seller will actually complete a transaction. Consequently, we do not transfer legal ownership of items from the seller to the buyer, and nothing in this agreement shall modify the governing provisions of Ca. Com. Code § 2401(2) and Uniform Com. Code § 2-401(2), under which legal ownership of an item is transferred upon physical delivery of the item to the buyer by the seller.

Read the whole agreement here...

They have just instituted a new program to give some protection from Vehicle Purchase fraud...the coverage details apply to all vehicle listings ended on or after March 12, 2004. It's basically insurance free to you as a buyer, up to $20k.

Read this new policy here...

I gotta admit I was pretty impressed how FAST e-bay pulled this particular add. I bet the FAST response by Club Cobra members has something to do with it. Gotta be plenty more cars/items slipping through WE don't catch as well.

I like their new insurance policy. Even fools need protection.

The pre-approved bidders list is offered to sellers. It allows them to screen bidders on an item. Yes, it involves e-mail exchange between the seller and a buyer.

From eBay:
Sellers have the option of restricting their individual listings to a specified group of buyers by creating a pre-approved bidders list.

If you try to bid on a listing that has a pre-approved bidders list, here's what will happen:
If you are a pre-approved bidder: The bidding process will proceed as usual.
If you are not one of the pre-approved bidders, you will see a notice saying that the item is restricted, and you will not be allowed to bid on the item. We suggest that you contact the seller to request being added to the list if you are interested in the item.

Ernie,

I'm almost positive it had something to do with it. As a result, of the diligence of people here finding these frauds, they've been inundated with reports of Cobra and other obvious car frauds. In the beginning, it took them a while to take them down. The last one was almost immediate.
